What will you see while you are in Jakarta? Skyscrapers? Magnificent malls in the city center? Jakarta is indeed not a famous tourist destination in Indonesia. Jakarta is the capital of Indonesia and also a business center. Many tourists just transit in Jakarta before heading to several famous tourist destinations such as Bali, Lombok, Raja […] The post Let’s have cultural holidays in Jakarta by learning Betawi Culture ! appeared first on YoExplore...
Let’s Get in touch with Betawi Culture !
Did you know, the indigenous people of Jakarta are known as the Betawi Tribe. This tribe is a descendant of people who settled in Batavia from the seventeenth century. The Betawi tribe itself is a mixture of various ethnics who have already lived in Jakarta, such as Sundanese, Malays, Javanese, Arabs, Balinese, Bugis, Makassarese, Ambonese, Chinese, and Indians. If you want to get to know more about Betawi people and their culture, there are interesting destinations for cultural holidays in Jakarta that you must visit.
I had the opportunity to visit this place when I felt bored with all the touristic destinations I ever visited in Jakarta. A friend of mine then recommended me to come to this cultural holiday destination. The place is Setu Babakan.
‘Setu’ comes from Situ which means Lake. Setu Babakan actually is an artificial lake. The Jakarta city government established Betawi Culture village in the southern area of Jakarta in 2000. Setu Babakan is a lake with an area of 30 hectares (79 acres) with its depth of 1-5 meters where the water comes from the Ciliwung River and is currently used as an alternative tourist spot, for residents and visitors. The function of Setu is not only to preserve the Betawi culture which is increasingly forgiven by the times, but also used as an alternative recreational place located in the southern Jakarta. Besides its main function as a reservoir of absorption water to the south of Jakarta,
What you can do at Setu Babakan
1. Visit Betawi Museum
In this Betawi cultural village there is Betawi Museum. This museum collection contains paintings, antiques, and other Betawi culture . The faces of Betawi legend, a film actor Benyamin Sueb, composer Ismail Marzuki, and several other prominent Betawi figures were displayed in the museum. Antique objects on display include heirlooms, Betawi classical musical instruments, Betawi batik, and antique bikes.
2. Learn Betawi art and culture
As the destination for cultural holidays, you can learn Betawi martial arts, Betawi dances and other types of Betawi art at Setu Babakan.
Especially for Saturday and Sunday they provide workshop and Betawi art performances from 09.00 to 17.00. In the morning the theater area is used for the Betawi Silat practice. Music art performances continued during the day such as Gambang Kromong, Samrah, Gambus, Qasidah, Hadrah, Keroncong Betawi, and Tanjidor. Then continue with performances of traditional dances and typical Betawi theather such as Lenong, Renggong Dance, Ondel–ondel, Betawi leather puppets and Betawi masks which held from afternoon to evening
If you are lucky, while going around the village, visitors can also watch a number of Betawi traditional processions that are still run by the majority of the residents who live in this village. Among the processions are Betawi Wedding party, circumcision, moving house, etc.
3. Indulge yourself with exotic Betawi culinary
Doing cultural holidays in Jakarta without try the culinary is not complete. Since the Betawi tribe is a mixture of various tribes who have lived in Jakarta since the Dutch colonial era, therefore there is a mixture of many cultures such as China, Arabic, Portuguese and Malay. This cultural mixture is not only seen in their traditional music, dance and clothing, but also in their culinary. In Setu Babakan, we can buy various kinds of Betawi specialties. The famous Betawi culinary which usually only sold in Jakarta Anniversary is Kerak Telor (egg crust). Kerak Telor is made from fried eggs mixed with white sticky rice, dried shrimp, roasted coconut, ginger, pepper, and red chili. With IDR 15,000 or 1 USD, you can enjoy delicious Kerak Telor.
The other Betawi culinary is ‘Tauge Goreng’ (fried bean sprouts). Tauge Goreng’s ingredients are rice cake, tofu, yellow noodles, tempeh oncom sauce, and boiled bean sprouts. Other traditional Betawi food are laksa, Soto tangkar, Gado-gado, dodol, and asinan betawi.
Your cultural holiday in Jakarta is not complete if you have not try ‘Bir Pletok’. Bir derives from Beer. But even though it’s called beer this special beverage doesn’t contain alcohol. Pletok beer is a traditional Betawi drink made from spices such as ginger, cinnamon, cardamom, and flowers. This beverage was made since the Dutch colonial era to warm the body. Is this
4. Seeing native Betawi houses
Because Setu Babakan is a cultural heritage area, of course you can still see Betawi native huses here. There are several houses with original Betawi style here, complete with distinctive door leaves and spacious terraces. Betawi style furniture is of course also different from other houses. There are also houses that are used as the area management office. It’s really a different atmosphere when entering this area.
5. Do Agro Tourism
Setu Babakan not only the right destination for your cultural holidays in Jakarta. But you also get a bonus, enjoying Agro Tourism in this village. In Setu Babakan, visitors can see plantations, and farms belonging to residents. Visitors also can see typical Betawi plants in the courtyard of the residents’ houses Some types of fruit here are starfruit, rambutan, kemuning, buni, guava, dukuh, menteng, gandaria, mengkudu, nam-nam, kecapi, durian. If you want to pick and try the fruits, you can ask and buy from the owner.
To make the trip more exciting, you can step your feet into the suspension bridge. This suspension bridge connects villages with artificial islands in the center of the lake. So you can enjoy the scenery better from there. This is good also as testing your adrenaline too.
6. Have fun by doing Water tourism
Visiting a lake with out enjoy the lake ? No way! If you want to relax around the lake, you can rent a boat. There are two boats that you can rent, a small boat for two and a big boat if you want to be with the group.
So that’s all my recommendation for your cultural holidays in Jakarta. Is it really interesting right ? Let’s go and pack !

After the body gone naturally, the skulls and skeletons are later placed on a stone altar. Therefore, the village is also known as the skulls island. Somehow, for unmarried people, the local communities buried the dead body. But, we think it is not appropriate to visit this village with young children.

Traveling to Bali with kids is a great idea. Having fun with your kids in the beautiful beaches and visit interesting cultural and historical places. Experiencing another places and culture would be a very interesting thing to do. If you plan to travel to Bali with kids, I would like to share some important information you have to consider.
Bali is a small island in Indonesian Archipelago with its tropical climate. You can enjoy the sunshine every day. The temperature is usually high with a humid air condition. The combination of hot weather and the high concentration of water in the air will make you and your kids feel uncomfortable if you are not used to staying in this kind of weather condition.
Bali has two seasons, the dry season and wet season. During the dry season, the weather is quite hot, and it can reach 33 degrees Celcius. This season usually starts in April and last until October. In some case, the dry season might not start until May. On the other hand, the wet season will start on October and last until April. If you wish to spend your time outdoors during traveling to Bali with kids, you can come during the dry season. However, the best time to visit Bali around June-August, when the sun is shining all day, but the weather is not really hot.
Bali has a lot of places to stay. From Uluwatu in the south most region to beautiful Lovina Beach in the north. If you are traveling to Bali with kids, I advise you to avoid the crowded tourist area such as Kuta and Legian. You can choose the quieter area such as Jimbaran, Uluwatu, and Ubud. These areas are not as crowded as Kuta but have good amenities.
There are many interesting places in Bali. If you are traveling to Bali with kids, you might need to choose your destination carefully. There are so many choices that you can choose. Ranging from waterpark, cultural attractions, and natural spot are some of the attractions that you can choose while traveling with kids in Bali.
Please pay attention when you are decided to visit a natural habitat of the animal such as the monkey sanctuary. Give extra care for your child as they might approach the animal beyond the safe distance. Another thing that you need to consider is to bring mosquito repellent when visiting any natural places. Dengue fever is the big threat that you should aware of.
If you want to visit a temple, please obey the rule. The general rules of visiting the temple usually found on the announcement board in the front of the temple. However, many temples have their special rules. For example, there are some temples that prohibit children who are not lost their milk teeth to enter the temple. Make sure that you check it with your guide or local people around the temple before entering the temple.
Bali has a lot of food to offer. You can find any kind of food you could imagine here in Bali. From the western, continental, even to vegan and raw food are available in Bali. However, If your kids have an allergy with a certain food, you will have to choose your eating places carefully.
If your kids are allergic to gluten, you can choose the gluten-free restaurant to have your meals. There are some gluten-free restaurants around the island and it is not hard to find the touristic area. Another problem usually comes from nuts allergy. Many Balinese traditional foods contain nut and its variant. So please be aware of choosing your restaurant if you have a nut allergy and make sure that you have asked the waiter about your food.
The problem will become more complicated when you go to the area far from the touristic area. Usually, there are some restaurants, but the food choice is not as many as the restaurant in Kuta or Ubud. My advice for this kind of situation is to bring your own food when you are visiting the places far away from the touristic area. By doing this, your traveling to Bali with kids will be easier.
Are you and your family vegetarian or vegan? If yes, you do not need to worry about foods here in Bali. You can find many vegetarian or vegan restaurant in almost all area of Bali. If you are not sure what to eat, you can always order fresh fruits.
As a tourist destination, Bali has some modern health facilities. Most of the healthcare facilities will have 24-hour emergency assistance, with the specialist doctor on call to the emergency department. However, those clinics and hospitals mostly located in the southern part of Bali. If you are far away from the touristic area, you might find it is harder to find the healthcare services. When you need the assistance, you can ask your accommodation as they usually know the nearest medical assistance from their premises.
You can also ask for “Puskesmas” or Public Health Care Centre that available in every district but mostly operated during the day only. The Puskesmas is not as sophisticated as a private clinic, but they are able to deliver the basic care for your health need. If they are unable to help you, they will refer you to nearst hospital. In the evening, you can visit a GP practice when you need assistance. Ask your host to find you a “Dokter Praktek”.
If you or your child need to take medicine regularly, I recommend you bring extra medicine from your home country as some medicines are not available here in Indonesia. You might also need a prescription for some medicine that you can buy over the counter in your home country.
I will say that you must have medical insurance when traveling to Bali and make sure that you know what is covered and not covered by your insurance. Read your insurance policy carefully and make sure you know which facilities I Bali you can use the cashless facilities, and what is their reimbursement policy. This will help you a lot when you get sick in Bali.
Those are the things you should consider before traveling with kids to Bali. Feel free to ask or leave a comment. You can also read my another article about what to pack before traveling to Bali with toddlers. Have a good holiday!

Currently, time for a family is a very valuable thing. Especially for a family where father and mother work full time. Parents are busy for working as well as children spend most of their time for schools/academics. Therefore, holidays are the only time where family members could stay and do something together. Usually, the period for holidays is usually limited so that we choose activities that are meaningful to strengthen family relations. One example is an adventurous trip or geo-tourism for family trips 2019.
Therefore, nowadays people choose family holidays to experience unique activities, adventurous activities and create memorable moments together. And, it causes spending time together through family holidays becomes a luxury stuff. In addition, researches revealed that there are many benefits from having family trips with kids.
Currently, people also use family holidays for a gadget or digital detox. Technologies and devices are affected current modern lifestyle including a family. Not only children, but adults also must minimize the use of devices to give a good example to children. And, by spending time through outdoor activities, family members could practice doing digital detox regularly.
Moreover, children, as well as parents, could learn new things by visiting new places and meet new people. An effective way of learning more than classroom activities or searching answers on Google engine is through traveling. Therefore, family tourism grows significantly and provides a positive contribution to the tourism industry. In 2012, it contributes to about 30% of the leisure travel market. And we could predict that family trips in 2019 could contribute higher to the tourism industry.
As we are aware that tourism grows faster worldwide and becomes the main income for many countries. The growth of the tourism industry is also due to the ease of sharing information through internet among travelers and backpackers. Somehow, the vast tourism development causes good and bad impacts. Therefore, the concept of sustainable tourism appears to preserve good local values, cultures and improve local economies in long-term impacts for local people.
So, as a family, we could also support the development of sustainable tourism. We could make a plan for family trips in 2019 that choose activities or destinations that are not only meaningful to our family but also benefiting local communities. Here are lists of idea on how to contribute to promoting sustainable tourism during our family trips 2019:
What is zero dollars tour practice? This bad behavior is lately hit and harms local government and local people in Indonesia as well as Thailand. There are mass tourists from China visit Bali Island and Manado City in North Sulawesi. They bought very cheap tour packages with heavily discounts from tour operators in China. The price includes accommodation, flights, and transport during tour, meals, and translators. Somehow, most of those tour operators are illegal and have no permit for tourism business in Indonesia.
Moreover, the payment method is by using online payment in China so that no need to pay an additional fee for the exchange rate. Those tour operators collaborate with Chinese-shop owners in Indonesia where tourists must shop overpriced products from the stores. Then, the revenue gained from the stores send to the tour operators in China to cover the discounted price of tour packages. Even though the mass of Chinese tourists visits Bali or Manado, it does not contribute much to the well-being of local people. And the image of “Bali for Cheap” shall also harm local economies.
While spending a week or couple days for family trips 2019, you could combine leisure, luxury, and learning local arts and cultures. Spend one or two days by learning arts such as dance class, cooking class, painting class or weaving scarf workshop with local communities. Learning local cultures during family trips could make it unique and unforgettable.
Foods could be the best way to learn local people with their culture. Traditional dishes could represent history, social norms, and way of life. And food could convey love and warmth. Taste the world through food tour. It could be difficult to ask your kids, the picky eaters to enjoy the foods. Try to find foods that are almost similar to your daily menus. Or combine local dishes with recognizable restaurants. And they could learn more open to another culture and respect others through local cuisines.
Connect with local hosts who understand well the traditions, cultures, and best places of the destinations that you visit. Sometimes language could be a barrier, but it also could lead to a beautiful relationship. You could learn the native language from your local guides. The tour operators shall ease your holiday especially if you are not familiar with the new destination. And choose licensed operators for your safety.
This is a great way to experience the daily life of locals. You probably could get lost, but it gives you the opportunity to communicate with locals.
You could visit traditional markets which sell local products/souvenirs that made by local people. Or you could visit art workshops where also sell handicrafts. Therefore, you could see directly the process of making the handicrafts. Or you could find the best local products such as coffee, tea, or local snacks. Moreover, the price is also cheaper compared if you buy it at shopping malls. The crafters shall be so excited if we value their skills. And you also participate in improving local welfare.
