This year, I have noticed a ton more birds than any of the years before. Maybe I never noticed them before because I was not working at home, or maybe its a take over of the birds. Whatever the case, its nice to see them and I am so glad they are here. Something about a family of birds (as long as it’s not crows, you know how I feel about those) singing a song in my yard that is so soothing. And that is the inspiration for our short and sweet tutorial today. We are going to make an eco-friendly DIY bird feeder. Gather your supplies and meet me in the garden!

Making a DIY bird feeder is as easy as 1-2-3!

~disclaimer: there are affiliate links within this post. that means that if you make a purchase on behalf of my recommendation, I might make a small commission. to learn more, please see my blog disclosure~

To Make Your DIY Bird Feeder, You Will Need:

Jiffy Seed Pots
Peanut Butter
Bird Seed
Jute twine for hanging

I chose Jiffy Seed Pots for 2 reasons. 1) They kinda suck for starting seeds and 2) because they suck for seed starting, we had a TON on hand, not being used. The added bonus of using them is that they are COMPLETLY biodegradable and bird-friendly. You can get them at your local Walmart (maybe, they do tend to sell rather quickly) or on Amazon.

Steps 1-2-& 3 For A DIY Bird Feeder

A DIY bird feeder for kids!
Poke a hole

Step 1 Poke Holes in the bottom sides of your jiffy pots. Run jute twine thru both holes and tie at the top.

Making eco friendly DIY bird feeder on the blog today
add some peanut butter

Step 2 Smear with peanut butter. This step is fun for kids. Simply have them place the pot over their closed hand. This step is a little messy but fun!

Add Some Seeds

Step 3 Roll the peanut butter covered pot in a large wide bowl of bird seed. Cover the peanut butter with seeds and press lightly. This step is also a bit messy.

Feed Your Birds

Add a simple DIY bird feeder to your yard!
It’s soooo cute!!

This project is so fast and fun, it is a great way to get the kids involved in taking care of nature. After you are finished with each DIY bird feeder, simply hang anywhere in the garden where the birds frequent. We made 3 of them and lined the yard hanging near the rain chain, the succulent hanger and on a shepherds hook amidst the ferns.Fun little DIY bird feeder project for kids!

Need Some Creative Inspiration For The Garden?

I turn to Pinterest for just about everything. Seriously, even if I have a strange bug bite, I skip Google and go straight to the big boy- Pinterest. If you need some creative gardening inspiration, follow me! Right now, my feed is covered in beautiful flowers, succulents, bird feeders, and so much more! Below are my gardening boards just waiting for you to follow!

Now that you have the inspiration and this super fast tutorial, get the kids and make some today! The birds will thank you and your yard will fill with lovely little birds!

How does a night of fun and games sound with the kids tonight? If your family is anything like mine, it usually sounds like someone getting their feelings hurt because they didn’t win. Tonight, we played Rabbit Pirates “Shoot For The Loot” and I more than half expected that to be the case. I will be the first to admit that I was shocked that the only whining of ANY sort came at the end of the game…. when it was over and time for showers and bed!

That my friends, is a game night win!

~disclaimer: this post was sponsored. All opinions and photos are my own. For more information about these policies, please see my blog disclosure page. Thank you.

What’s Inside The Rabbit Pirates Game Box?

What's inside the Pirate Rabbits game? Its a pretty set up thats for sure!
Inside Pirate Rabbits Shoot For The Loot Game!

Inside the box, all nicely packaged you will find three boards, called islands. There is also “shot cards” which is essentially your ammo. And, small round tiles called loot.

To play Rabbit Pirates, each player (up to 4) selects a player card from the deck. They then take turns laying face down their shot card under the character place holer on the board.

The cards are then flipped, revealing the tools, and the number of points. The player who laid down the highest number card wins the loot for that island.

What I have come to expect from RoosterFinWe love Rabbit Pirates! Such a fun game to play!

If you have been around for a while now, you know this family loves RoosterFin! We have played many kids games, and not one has disappointed us or let us down in more than one area!

The game itself is of the highest quality. You even get some great bonus material, that we LOVE to look at before the game starts. Bug always picks the toughest looking female character, and JR loves to pick the most stylish male character.

In Rabbit Pirates, along with the standard characters that we love to see, there is also a super glossy huge fold out that’s double-sided. One side, (in full color) is clear and easy to understand instructions. The other side tells a story and is honestly very beautiful. It tells all about the family, the history, and the quest to be the win Rabbit Pirates.

Pirate Rabbits comes with lots of bonus material!
Little details like character cards and bonus material show the thoughtfulness behind this game.

The Learning Side Of Shooting For The Loot

Don’t tell your kids this, but there is a teaching lesson hidden in Rabbit Pirates. At the end of the game, you get to open all of your “loot” that you have won. There is an assortment of different chests, containing rabbit dollars, in increments of 50, 30, 10 and a rotten fish tile that is -5. So adding and subtracting, but they don’t even realize that they are doing math! All they know is

“Hey! I got a rotten fish and have to take 5 coins off my total! Man!”

The game is pretty quick, but playing more than one full game is almost a MUST! (just don’t skip bath time, they should be ok!)

We Love Rabbit Pirates Shoot For The Loot

Shoot For The Loot with this Rabbit Pirates game!
Treasure chests that hold the loot you are trying to win! Each chest holds an amount of coins or, rotten fish that detract from the total points earned!

So here’s a recap of what you just read, in case you are like me and a skimmer 🙂

  • The game is awesome, no fights the whole game!
  • Everything was built with kids in mind, high-quality materials and is  wonderfully illustrated, as always
  • You can get this game directly from RoosterFin by clicking that link.
  • Quick gameplay means you are not stuck at the table all night
  • Brush up on those add and subtract skills!
  • It’s SO fun to play!
  • Rabbit Pirates is a fun fast family game perfect for after dinner
Fancy a pin to remember this by?

What’s your favorite game to play as a family? We own several games made by RoosterFin and each one is unique and puts a nice spin on things. We could (and have) make an entire day out of playing games. It’s nice to turn off the electronics and just bond as a family. You can tell that they take pride in bringing families back together, having fun, and creating memories.

How To Rock A Couch Cover Even If Its Too Big

Tell me I am not alone here. You tidy up the house while the kids and hubby are at school and work. The kitchen looks on point, and the lines are in the carpet from the vacuum. Everything is looking fresh and clean. Then, you turn to the couch (or in my case, couches) and fill up in disgust and maybe a titch of sadness. Dog hair. Kid crumbs. Little bits of paper, and maybe even a few toys are thrown in. So, what do we do? Turn to the trusty blanket routine. You know the old song and dance. Find a nice blanket that somewhat matches the decor of your living room, and gives it a nice toss onto the couch. What you need is a couch cover.

It’s not that you aren’t trying. It’s just that you are out of options. And giving up the family for a clean looking couch is NOT an option. I think I may have found the solution, but it’s going to take a few tweaks.

disclaimer: I received products in this post at a discount in exchange for this post. With that said, this post is 100% my own thoughts, opinions, and ideas. To learn more about these policies, please see my blog disclosure page. thank you.

All Couch Covers Are NOT The Same

With so many different styles and price points, it’s a little hard to know where to start.  Innex makes one that drapes and hooks, and that is the one we will be focusing on today.

NOTE:

This product is intended for a full-size couch. I am using a convertible futon.

Innex couch cover review
A full-size couch cover on a full-size futon is just a little oversized

Using Your Couch Cover By Innex

This couch cover is made by Innex. You can find it on Amazon.

Simply drape your cover over the couch. The extra cutouts go over the arms. The skinnier flap drapes over the back.

Notice the loops on the inside of the cover. Use this to hook the bungee too, over the back of the couch.

Your cover is now on and you are finished, according to Innex.

Upgrade Your Couch Cover- Hot Mess Style

Because my couch moves and adjusts to my needs, this cover is perfect, even if its just a little big. While washing my couch cover in hot water (trying to shrink it which did not work, by the way) I noticed a few more loops. This gave me an idea. I am going to try to hook into those with something to help hold this sucker in place. It does move quite a bit.

Testing A Theory

Innex provides a bungee that is adjustable and, by all accounts, is pretty strong. But it only has two hooks to secure the couch cover. I would like to add two more hook points with a tether to help. Let’s try.

Innex couch cover review
Straps go around the back of the couch. This is adjustable

All I am going to do is take some ribbon and loop it thru the arm loops. I will tie in the back.

Nope. I won’t even show you pictures of this.

At first, it pulled it together in the back. But after the first dog jumped on there ( and all 5 did, the second it was on the couch) it kind of shifted, making it look like a disaster. No thank you.

Keep in mind, this was made for a full-size couch. I am guessing that means with removable cushions. This couch cover has little-weighted rolls of stuff into the couch. They are useless on the futon for the most part.Innex couch cover review

Not A Fail, But Not A Complete Win Either

Let’s list a few of the pros because it’s important that you understand that there ARE in fact a few of them.

Innex couch cover review
I adore the surface of this cover. Its soft repels liquid and is a nice color.
  • Microsuede (or something similar) in a rich brown color. It’s soft and has zero loft. I like that there are no loose fibers for Buddy to chew on because those are his favorite.
  • This thing REPELS liquid, which I adore and that alone is a win for me.
  • It comes with an adjustable bungee tether thing. I like that it adjusts because when its too tight and comes snapping off and hits, that hurts.Innex couch cover review

Now for the not so great:

  • Its arm flaps are just a little long. This might be suited better for higher armed couches.
  • It has a ton of extra loops which make me think that they would be great to attach to ribbon and secure down. But, its a trick. I have not quite figured out why they were included.

Get’s The Job Done

Overall, this couch cover gets the job done. It repels liquid and has no little strings or fibers for the dogs to chew. Its plenty long (read: way too long) but, it’s not that big of a deal.

Do you have a cover for your couch or do you throw a blanket and call it good? What do you look for in a couch cover to suit all of your needs? I would love to know.

Until next time

Marlene

School is almost out, summer is getting closer and the end of the festivities are gearing up to get started! And, at the end of each year, I like to present the teachers who have spent more time with my kids daily than I have with a little token of my appreciation. Keeping on the trend of succulents, today’s project should be no big surprise. I am taking old books (dictionaries and encyclopedias to be exact) that were lonely and destined for the landfill and turning them into desktop planters. Follow along as I create a succulent book planter, perfect for teacher gift ideas.

disclaimer: I know that to most, doing ANYTHING besides reading a book is the highest form of disrespect. Please understand, these books were heading to the dump. This project is simply to keep hold of those books that are destined to be destroyed just a little longer. No disrespect is meant by this post.

An Old Book, Rediscovered

Pinning for later! How to make a succulent book planter!
PIN ME

Walking into a thrift store, I have two places that I head for first. I look for an arts and crafts section, and if none is present, I look for the book corner. The shop I frequent has an entire room dedicated to books, complete with a rocking chair near the children’s books.

Also found in my favorite thrift store is a selection of books that they have been unable to sell, marked at 10 cents and 25 cents. I picked up 3 hardbound books perfect for this succulent book planter project. I selected dictionaries by Webster and found The Columbia Viking Desk Encyclopedia for less than $1!Finnally! Instructions on how to make this cute succulent book planter!!

Gathering Supplies

For this project, you won’t spend much, but the results will be stunning. You will only need a few supplies, all of which I had on hand (and I bet you will have at least one in your supply box!)

Old Hardbound Book

Mod Podge
Saran Wrap
Dirt
Succulent Plants
Spray bottle

Exacto Knife

Ok, so I did not have a spray bottle on hand, but the local Dollar Tree did.

Sealing Pages Of Time

seal the edges of your succulent book planter to ensure stability
a few coats of mod podge on the outside edge of your succulent book planter to add stability and longevity!

In the tutorial that I read from apartmenttherapy.com, the post said to just use a little white glue to hold the pages together for cutting. For my project though, I wanted to really seal the pages together. I used several coats of mod podge (which I also found at the thrift store for $.99) Let these pages fully dry before moving on.

Don’t Eat Your Words

Making a succulent book planter
draw out your box before you start cutting

The hardest part of this project was putting the knife to the book. I was raised that you MUST respect books. Deciding the perfect place cut and place a succulent was a little nerve-wracking. For the bigger book, I flipped thru the words and found the one I loved the best. Curisioty. Perfectly describes the values our teachers have instilled in my elementary school kids.

Open your book planter to the work curiosity.

After selecting where the cut would be made, the work is slow. Trace out the area, and use a very sharp exacto knife to slice the pages. You should be able to cut out a few with each pass of the knife. Remember, succulents do not need tons of dirt to thrive, making this succulent book planter perfect for the job. Stop cutting pages when you have reached about 3/4 of the pages of the book.

Slowly remove the pages few at a time to make a succulent book planter
The aftermath of cutting up an old book for a succulent book planter.

A Little More Glue

After cleaning up the edges of the pages and getting all of the little scraps out, I took my brush and did a light coat of mod podge on the inside, and before it dried I cut a piece of saran wrap to lay inside. A little barrier to keep your succulent book planter from getting too soggy.Lining the succulent book planter with mod podge and saran wrap!

Dirt and Books

After you have completed the steps above, you are ready to start planting. Choose plants that are hardy and do not need tons of care. I love working with hens and chicks, as well as sedum and trailing jade. Sprinkle a little dirt to cover the bottom of the succulent book planter and carefully place your plants inside. Tamp down and water in.

this is the lovely trailing jade that I love to add to all of my succulent projects!

Give The Gift Of A Succulent Book Planter

This is such a conversation piece. Place it on an end table or on top of your desk. Give this easy succulent book planter as a gift for your favorite teacher or school support staff to show your appreciation for helping your little one grow all year long.

By now, you have seen that I have a slight obsession with succulents. It’s no surprise that I also adore mini tin pail buckets. Even more, I love that I can get three of them for a dollar at the dollar tree. Today we are combining them again for a short and sweet tutorial for the kitchen! Rustic mini succulent magnets are perfect for gift giving, and giving fresh air to a stagnant kitchen!

Getting Started

Saving for later! Mini succulent magnets for the kitchen! To make these mini succulent magnets, you will need a few supplies. Please note, there are affiliate links in this post. That means that I will receive a commission at no cost to you for recommending the products that I already use. To read more about this policy, please see my blog disclosure page.

~disclaimer: I received parts of this craft at a discount in exchange for this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Making mini succulent magnets today that as so simple and beautifulSupplies
3 pack of mini pail buckets at the Dollar Tree . (Seriously, for all the projects I have lined up and have already shown you, I recommend just ordering a case. 🙂 )
Nail to poke holes (and a hammer)
dirt
succulents
magnets (Amazon: get them here)
E6000 Glue
Optional: jute twine and cut out burlap ribbon, These took my mini succulent magnets from adorable to giggle-worthy. I used this set and I love love love it so much!

Mini Succulent Magnet Making

Whew… say that ten times fast! Down to business. To begin, poke some drainage holes in the bottom of your pails. I have found that the simplest way to do so is with a screw or nail and hammer and tap until the head pokes through. You do not want gaping holes, but enough so your succulents do not sit in pooling water.

Decorate Your Mini Succulent Magnets

I love that these little pail buckets are so useful! So far, I have made rain chains and another version of a succulent planter with them in the past, and they both are now some of my garden favorites. I highly encourage you to check them out when you are done with this!

Just a little jute for the mini succulent magnets!
adding jute twine to my mini succulent magnets!

If you choose to decorate your mini pails, now is the time to do that. For this project, I had a scrap piece of cut out burlap ribbon that was just big enough to fit around the bucket. I simply wrapped and glued this to the bucket and moved on to the next. Tightly wrap your jute twine around the bucket, stopping every so often to glue.

Planting Some Beauty

Completing a few mini succulent magnets on the blog today!I love that there are so many different types of succulents and that they are so hardy. A spritz of water here, lots of sun, ba-da-bing-ba-da-boom!! Succulents have me looking like a regular Cisco! Just add dirt to half of the mini succulent magnets, and pat lightly. Add a few sprigs of your choice of succulents and a little more dirt to cover the roots.

I love this idea! Mini succulent magnets for the kitchen!Give each mini succulent magnet planter a little tap after you are done on the table to help things settle.

Finishing Touches

To finish off this project, you need to add your magnets. Because they are little I used three per planter, just to be safe. A little dab of E600 and you are about set. Just wait for dry time!

PRO TIP:

Do not use hot glue to attach the magnets to the mini buckets. Because both are a slick smooth surface, the glue will stick to neither. E600 takes a bit longer to dry, but rest assured that those magnets are bonded for life to that bucket!

Give A Little Giggle

I can not help but giggle every time I look at these mini succulent magnet planters! What I really liked about this project (aside from the obvious cuteness overload!) is that it took me less than an hour to put together all three of them!

If you are looking for a great gift for mom, or a housewarming gift, or really a just because gift, this is perfect for all of those occasions! Or you could make them and keep them! Maybe you are going to be holding a craft fair booth and want something cute to display your business cards, there you go!

Now that you know how to make them, the question is, when will you start? If you do, I would love to see your photos!

Until next time
