In December, my family got a pretty scary situation. My little brother had his leg amputated due to an aggressive form of cancer. As long as I can remember, I have been the one who looks out for him. I am my brother’s keeper, for as long as he breathes.

When we were kids, we were inseparable.

My brother turned into a gigantic ass, but luckily when he was a little boy, he sure did love me. I could get that boy to do anything I wanted him to. Though the words were never spoken, he knew that I would be there for him no matter what the situation. That I would always have his back. We would fight like no other, ending up bloody and bruised some days, other days we would avoid each other completely. Even after all the fights and hurt feelings, I still felt like I was my brother’s keeper.

Even as a child, I felt I was my brother's keeper
My brother was pretty cute as a kid

I have a confession to make. As a girl, just hitting puberty, I was mortified to purchase feminine products. I would seriously panic each month, almost to the point of hyperventilating. My little saving grace would see this and just take my money, hop on his bike and jet to the little corner store. No issues. He would straighten my hair before I would go out, with the iron mom wouldn’t have been happy to see us using. That kid would straighten it better than ANY of my girlfriends.

I Am My Brother’s Keeper

Though we have parents, I have always felt a little bit protective, and a lot like he is my responsibility to watch over and keep safe. Last year, my ability to shield him did nothing for him. He was diagnosed with Sarcoma Cancer, in his knee. So he started 5 weeks of radiation, in hopes to shrink the dang tumor enough to remove. It didn’t work. In fact, it was the opposite. His leg started to hurt more and more, and you could see the lump on the inside of the knee. 9 days before a total knee replacement, he got the news. His leg would need to be amputated in order to save his life. There were no more options for him.

I am my brother's keeper
I might have been his keeper, but I was not his stylist.

The night leading up to surgery, he was in great spirits. He seemed to have made peace with the fact that he was never going to stand on his own two feet again. I challenged him to one last race in the hospital, but, he just couldn’t. We plan to get matching tattoos, mine will say I’m with Stumpy, and his will say Stumpy.

I am my brothers keeper
My brother plans to hunt and fish, just as he enjoyed before surgery.

After Care, No Longer A Keeper

Surgery seemed to have lasted for hours. I thought for sure they messed something up and that was why it was taking so long. Dad got the call. The surgery had gone well and they saved more of the leg than they thought they would. My brother had a long road ahead, but at least he had a road.

Pinning for later! Even as a child, I have always felt that I am my brother's keeper
Pin me for later!

Today, my brother is taking things day by day. He is learning how to do the things that he once did with ease. He is a master of that wheelchair, and I think he would give a rabbit a good run for its money in a hopping race. He seems to think that he no longer needs me to be his keeper, but he is wrong. I will always be my brother keeper.

Take This Away

As a mother, this situation can and should be learned from. It is important that if your child has a sibling, that they understand that is bond that is unique. They should grow up, loving and fighting, but fiercely protecting each other. They need to understand that one day, mom and dad will no longer be here. That when that time comes, they will need to lean on each other. I want my daughter to be her brother’s keeper, and my son to be my daughter’s keeper. I want them to be happy for the other when things go right, and cry together when things go south. Because no matter how old I am or my brother gets, I will always be my brother’s keeper.

I am my brother's keeper
Yea, we did not dress our selves.

Until next time

Marlene

You know that every deed, good or bad, has a consequence. It would make sense that being just a good person comes without a cost. Helping your fellow neighbor is not as simple as helping. I do believe that there are great people in this world, who would pay it forward when their time of crisis is up. I truly do. What I do not believe is that I have ever met one. Which makes me beg the question: What is the price for being a decent person? I am going to take you on a little journey, of a good deed that went horribly wrong. I know the price of being a decent human, and it is far too high.

The real price of being a good person is much too high

As you well know, I live in an HOA community. You can read that story here. I do call it the neighborhood from Hell, but, as this is my home, I try to make the best of the situation. We chose to move into the rural area, surrounded by heavy woods and plenty of wildlife. I want for nothing when it comes to the location of my home. 2 years ago, we moved into our current home, which is within walking distance from our first home.

A little background goes a long way

The background to this story is that just before we were to move we were approached by the woman who lived across the street. She stated that she had fallen on some hard times (read: drugs) and was ready to turn her life around. I am such a sucker for the underdog, I immediately said yes to her request to move in and pay rent. That was where I went wrong. You see the price for being a decent person here is now that my first home is being condemned. There is sewage spilling into the yard. There are hypodermic needles littering the beautiful green belt. The power has been off for quite some time, and there is no running water.

Please share, maybe someone else can learn the price of being a decent person before it is too late for them

When she first moved in, she paid rent and made herself a little garden in the front. Nice curb appeal. Then one day as I drove past it, I noticed that the wood stove pipe was gone. Strange. Up here if you do not have wood heat the winters tend to get super cold. The door is kicked in. You can see from the street the presumably stolen property littering the yard. You see, now I assume the worst about the entire situation.

I honestly can say that the price of being a good person is much to rich for my blood.

Squatters Have More Rights than you know

The term squatters is not the nicest, but it does paint a vivid picture. As it turns out, they do have rights. Why? I couldn’t tell you. But, I can tell you that I am tired of being looped into the same category as these wretched people. I know that someone will chime in and tell me that they are sick people. That maybe I should have mercy on them because they have a disease. Well, I just do not buy it. I believe that the price of being a good person depends on the person. My price happens to be leans and fines, for just trying to help.

Landlordstation.com states that there are two categories that what you and I would consider squatters fall into. The first is true squatting. That means that they have proof that they have received mail and otherwise are tenants. The site states that these people often times have false documents and police then have to sort out who is legit and who is not. Which as we know, can take a really long time.

The second category is what landlordstation.com calls trespassers. That is a person who breaks in and has nothing in the home to make it look lived in. These people are easier to get rid of than the true squatters. Removing a true squatter requires help from the courts.

Down The Road The Price Of Being A Decent Person

I think that there will always be a price, as long as there are good people. I want to say that my problems are over and that the situation has been resolved. That would be a lie, and I just can’t lie to you. Every day, there seems to be one more thing added to the list of pages of problems, ranging from legal battles with our HOA to bigger problems, like them wanting to terminate our lease, in the home we are living in. I actually just got that letter today.

What is the true price of being a decent person? Find out here
Do not let my story stop you from being a good person.

Preservation is something that is a proven trait of us humans, good or bad. So my troubles are many at the moment, I know that at the end of each day, I was trying to be a decent person. I wanted to make a difference in one person’s life. Nevermind that difference had more negative effects on others, I know that my intentions were of the purest form.

If you have ever dealt with squatters, whether it was of your own property or a neighboring vicinity, you have my deepest respect. I hope your troubles were resolved rather quickly (as the court allowed) and your out of pocket expenses were light. I know the burden you have carried. I feel your pain.

On The Other Side

If you happen to know someone who deals with this situation, and can offer a kind word or tip of any kind, I would appreciate you sharing this with them. In the meantime, do not give up on being a decent person. Do not give up on humanity. I know that my price for being a good person was and is through the roof, but carry this with you. If I had to do it over again, I would. Admittedly, things would be so different, but I would still help her. That is who I am. And I bet it is who you are too, deep inside.

Getting involved with your local shelter or soup kitchen is a great way to help someone who truly wants to be helped. There is a difference in helping your fellow person/ neighbor, and setting your self up for potentially being used and walked on and over.

The price is high for being a good person
This was found on unsplash.com. But the message is true. Don’t let this stop you from being a good person

Take care of each other out there

Are You Wasting Money With Magnetic Locks?

We all know the old school style of childproofing, where everything was hard plastic and was less childproof, and more adult proof. The stupid under cabinet locks that you would get your hand caught in if not turned just right. And who could forget that toilet lock? Certainly not me, as it had a small boy just learning to use the big boy potty peeing ALL OVER MY BATHROOM whilst trying to open the contraption. (Side note, I do not recommend a toilet lock. It tends to get messy. Just shut the dang door, would ya?) I ended up moving the harmful things up high because the thought of installing a different system gave me hives. So when I was asked to try a set of magnetic locks, I was very hesitant. I don’t like being itchy 😉

Pinning for later! Magnetic lock installation guide

What Is A Magnetic Lock System?

A locking magnetic system will come with the lock, latch and some sort of key. Inside the lock mechanism, there is a magnet that will flip the latch over the latching rest. The key is a strong magnet that flips the lock from locked to unlock. Simple, right?

Are Magnetic Locks worth the time?
This shows you what two magnetic locks looks like with the hardware

Installing  Magnetic Locks

Inside the package, there are 4 locks, 4 latches one key and screws. Each lock and latch has a strong 3M strip attached for simple installation. The pictures below will show you how to place the latch and lock correctly.

Magnetic locks are simple to install and impressively strong!

After Instalinning Your Magnetic Locks

I HIGHLY suggest that you do not let your kids play with the key before you install your magnetic locks. I did, and then they went to school. After I finished placing the locks on my cupboards, went to test that I did it right and, the key was missing.

Installing these magnetic locks does not take a ton of skill

After you have placed all of your new locks where you want them, you need a central location (that is out of reach of little hands) that you will remember. I happen to be a hot mess from time to time and eventually end up losing, well, everything. Lucky for me, Mauitech even thought to add a 3M strip to the part that holds the key.

Uses For Magnetic Locks

Do you have kids, but not babies, and therefore the thought of baby proofing your home seems silly to you? It did to me too. But, then I realized that even though my kids are 9 and 6, being able to safely limit access to certain areas to my house would benefit them even as they grow. I have listed a few examples of areas that you can use these magnetic locks.

  • Under the kitchen sink, where you keep your cleaning supplies
  • Medicine cabinet
  • Area you store your essential oils (because you should treat them as they are medication with children, lock them up to keep everyone safe)
  • Dog/Cat food storage areas outside (small cabinet or drawer works perfect, and will keep wildlife out of your pet’s food, like raccoons.)
  • Desk (I like to keep candy in my desk, and keeping it locked keeps me from absentmindedly opening it all day and snacking)
  • Laundry room (because we pay good money for the Tide Pods that folks are eating like candy)
  • Craft Supply area (keep scissors and glue from being used for the wrong thing and just lock them up!)

A useful post about the benefits of magnetic locks for child safety

Are These Locks Worth It?

If you want to know if these magnetic locks are worth your time and money I would say yes. Compared to the old style of baby proofing products, these are a fantastic upgrade. They will take a little getting used to, like how to use the key properly, and remember that they are in place. If you need, Mauitech has also included key stickers to place on the outside of the item you are locking, to remind you that it is there.

Looking for a set of your own? Its here along with the great reviews.  http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073ZW57MC

Speaking of needing a reminder, if you look at a cabinet with a magnetic lock and one without, you could not tell which was which. I really like that I can lock my stuff up, keep things out of harm’s way, without compromising on the style of my home.

PRO Tips For Using Magnetic Locks In Your Home

  • Before you finalize the installation, make sure your locks do not stick. If they do, be sure to readjust them. If they stick, they won’t work right.
  • You can set your locks to unlock by switching the latch to hold the lock down. This will make it open all the time.
  • When using the key to unlock, swipe up. I have had 100% success opening using the swipe up method of unlocking. To do this, press your key just UNDER the lock, and pull up. If done correctly, you will hear the latch unlock.

When done properly, this magnetic lock and latch set up will sit just like this

Have you ever used magnetic locks? How much baby proofing did you do when your babies were just getting into exploration? Do you prefer the old style safety locks and latches to anything new age? If you have never used something that has made your life easier as a parent, I would love love love to hear about it! Let me know in the comments your most #1 way to baby proof your home!

Until next time

Grooming my dogs is not my favorite thing to do. None of them (save the blind deaf dog, go figure) particularly like the bath, and it’s a huge pain to get a mammoth like Sissy in and out of our very large bathtub. (Side note: ladies, I finally found a tub that you can lay in AND the girls are covered!) And then the brushing. Oh, that is NEVER fun for her. She has SO much hair, that the task tends to last over a few days. She gets grumpy and I know when she has had enough. And if she sees the undercoat brush, she will go find a fresh mud puddle or a pile of dirt. She hates the pain that style brush puts out. When furbliss reached out and asked if we wanted to try their new multi-purpose dog brush, I figured what the heck! At least Sissy wouldn’t imminently recognize this new dog brush!

Theres a new dog brush in town and its sure to change the way you groom your dog
This dog brush is a game changer.

What The Heck Is A Sub- Par Dog Brush?

If you have ever had your dog run when the grooming is about to start because they know what the dreaded brush you are trying to conceal behind your back, you may be using a sub-par dog brush. Traditional dog brushes are metal and basically rake your poor pup’s skin, with no buffer. Now imagine that is your scalp. If you cringed, then your dog’s brush needs a new consideration.

The newest dog brush and we are sold!

“I like to think that if my dog had a say, he would actually brush his hair.”

Furbliss Is A Grooming Game Changer

Let me be honest for a sec: This dog hair brush doesn’t even look like a brush at first glance. It’s small. It is weird looking. It claims to be a multi-functional brush. So when I first got it, I showed it to the dogs. This is their reaction:

Sissy checking out her new dog brush!

Natas checking out our new dog brush
Natas seems to know that this new dog brush will do wonders for her skin. even before I take it out of the package

Buster checking out the girls new dog brush
Buster has already claimed this new brush as his, even though it was purchased with long-haired Sissy in mind!

It’s a little small for a man’s hands but fits perfectly in my own hand. The shape feels like it was designed with long periods of brushing in mind, so that is great.

Learn more at https://www.chewy.com/glandex-furbliss-long-hair-dog-brush/dp/164105

After Sissy (whom the dog brush was intended for) got a quick brush, Buster decided that he could no longer wait, and pushed her out of the way. He happens to be a HUGE fan of this Furbliss dog hairbrush!

The most surprising thing about this brush is the fact that does not only help to remove the dog hair, but it really seems to lift the dead skin from Natas’ poor back. The massage that this little red brush gives is pretty special too, considering the way they all seem to smile when I brush them! (Don’t worry, I won’t post those images, they are not the prettiest to see!)

A Bathtime Brush Too!

This morning I decided to try out the other function of this dog brush. It is great for the bath, so it claims. As it turns out, all three of the boys (Big Buster, Little Buster, and Buddy) needed baths. This was the perfect opportunity.

Sorry that I can not include any images from bathtime. These dogs are very, shall we say… active… in the bath. I would surely drop my phone or camera right into the tub. You understand, right?

I am SO pinning this for later! A new dog brush that doesn't hurt!

Armed with the brush and a soothing blend of dog shampoo made by Zesty Paws I made my way to the bathroom with the meanest of the mean, Little Buster. He will pee on your leg and bite you for scolding him. He happens to only love my kids and is too protective of them at times.

A bath for Little Buster has to be a surprise and he must be the first one it. If you approach him after you have given any other dog a bath, he will growl and spit at you. Really, he is sweet though. It also includes lots of dog rolls and summersaults. He loathes the bath. Today though, he sat in the water and let me scrub him with this revolutionary dog brush. This is a huge step for him, the first enjoyable bath he has ever had! All because this brush puts him in a trance when you use it on him. It was so easy to really get him sudsy and rinsed!

The Only Complaint I have

I hate to say anything negative about this dog brush because obviously, a team of experts spent a ton of time and energy to produce such a fantastic tool. But if you are still reading, that means you want all the facts. My only complaint about this dog brush is that it does not seem to lock the hair in place between each pass of the dog’s coat. Instead of the traditional style brush, that hurt and scrapes the skin, BUT locks the hair in. You have the opposite with this dog brush. The teeth release the now free dog hair between each pass of the fur. Instead of a neat little pile of dog hair beside me, I had been covered with 5 different types of dog hair.

The mess after a new dog brush
I am not a fan of dog hair everywhere. But I think I can deal.

I do not think this one oversight is worthy enough for a review telling you that I do not love this product. In fact, it is quite the opposite. I can handle having to vacuum every day for the life of my pup. I already do that. However, if you can not handle dog hair clumps floating around the air in your room, I would look for a way to contain the hair that is removed from your dog. Or just take the party outside!

Overall, I definitely recommend this brush especially if you deal with an itchy dog, a horrible bather, or a dog who runs when you bring out the grooming tools.

Have you ever tried a silicone dog brush before? Would you make the change if you knew that there would be no more negative experiences for your pooch when it came to a good brushing session?

I have been looking for something to make for a few days and today, I pumped out a super cute and easy door hanger for Spring! One of my passions is to upcycle things when I can and this craft uses an old rubber boot that fit Bug for like 5 days. I really didn’t want to just toss them, but I couldn’t bear to part with them. I mean look! Everything about them screams Spring! Follow along as I show you how to make a rubber boot door hanger!

For this project you will need a few items:

Making a rubber boot door hanger is so easy you will wonder why you never made one!

Rubber boot ( don’t have one on hand? check the local thrift store. DO NOT buy a new set of boots for this project please!)
Florist Foam
Silk Flowers
Ribbon
Plastic Bunny Decoration

Before I show you this incredibly easy rubber boot door hanger tutorial, I want to tell you about the silk flowers. The ones used in this tutorial have been gathered for a long time now, and some are older than Bug. Since I do not know which ones came from where I will give you a little tip: silk flowers are available at the Dollar Tree. And you can Ship It To Your Local Dollar Tree Store For FREE*! !  They are perfect for use on the front door for those sporadic springtime rains! (meaning you won’t ruin flowers that cost upwards of $9.99 a bunch in some places.) And lucky for you, you can now shop at the dollar tree from where you sit! (Yea I know, when I found out, I got a little worried about my self-control as well 😉 )

Getting the most out of your rubber boot

Ok so before I even started this project, I was in love with Bug’s rubber boots. But you know how kids are, growing much too fast. She wore them maybe 1 month, and that is really being generous. So they have been sitting there a little lonely, waiting to be used. Then today it hit me! I DO have a use for them.

To begin, cut your florist foam to fit inside your rubber boot door hanger if it is too big. The one I am using here is one that was in a bin out in the weather, having already been used. If you need some Amazon has a great variety of the green stuff. Place the foam in the bottom of the rubber boot.

PRO tip:

To get the full use out of the foam, leave it longer. Cutting the foam too short will leave your flowers all limp and dangly on your rubber boot door hanger.

Adding Flowers To Your Rubber Boot Door Hanger

After you have decided on your colors, Its time to arrange your flowers. I like having a variety of lengths and sizes, to make it look like an actual plant arrangement on my front door. Start arranging them with height in mind.

A beautiful Easter rubber boot door hanger

You can make your rubber boot door hanger as full as you like. I added a branch of false ivy and a few glitter twigs to give some depth. This is where you should let your creative juices flow. But don’t stuff it. That will look silly.

PRO tip:

If you place the taller flowers in the back and start making them shorter as they get to what will be the front of your boot, it will look more natural. Also, insert FIRMLY into the foam. As mentioned above, if your foam is not tall, OR your flowers are not inserted firmly enough, things will look sloppy.

Finishing Touches

That bunny was just a dollar! And The yellow butterfly and pink tulips and white peonys all came from the Dollar Tree!

The last thing you are going to need is a way to hang this one of a kind rubber boot door hanger. The problem I had was the little rubber loop on the back of the boot that helps you pull it on isn’t very big, and it would look so funny hanging that high up. So I used pink ribbon and tied it thru the rubber boot loop and created a slipknot on the outside.

Uses For Your Rubber Boot Door Hanger

If you just don’t want to hang the rubber boot door hanger up on the front door (first why not? It’s adorable) then there are a few other options.

  • You could use it as a centerpiece on the coffee table or mantle for Easter
  • Use it on the front step for instant curb appeal
  • Place your rubber boot door hanger in a well-chosen window
  • Give it to someone as a gift
  • Sell your rubber boot door hanger on offer up or craigslist

Pinning so I can find again! A super cute Easter rubber boot door hanger!

I think this will be part of this year’s annual Easter Party decor, which I am just beginning to start. So when it gets closer to the party (beginning of the month) I will put the plastic Easter bunny I found at the dollar tree right in the top of the rubber boot door hanger.

Is there a specific type of springtime decor that you are looking forward to pulling out? Or would you rather learn a new DIY trick from me? I would love to hear the answers in the comments below!
