If you are a frugal party planner and thrower, this will be a great post for you to add to your creative belt! I know that party decorations can be super expensive, and that is why I always look to see if there is a cheaper option before I buy the decoration. These honeycomb decorations utilize only a few items, and they are all items you can find at your local Dollar Tree !

I only share products that I use for a project and only ones that I trust. To read more about that policy, please see my disclosure page. Thanks ūüėČ ~

When I started my quest to make honeycomb decorations, I found tons of sites that sold the premade ones, but not many showed how to make them. Then I found this guy. Mr. Printables. He is basically me in man form. His love of all things crafty drew me in and now, I am a raving fan! Read the post that inspired this one, here!

Easy Steps To Make Honeycomb Decorations

1 Collect your tissue paper. These were for Easter, so I used loads of pastels and bold paper. You can find various count packages at Dollar Tree , or any other store that carries wrapping paper and the like.

Gather you supplies to make your honeycomb decorations!

2 Decide how big you would like your honeycomb decorations to be. I went with different sizes for this project. However, very large and very small are more difficult to work with.

PRO TIP:

you can get about 4  rectangles out of one sheet if you fold into quarters. If you are not alternating colors this method of folding and cutting your tissue paper is most effective. The process looks like this:

Fold into quarters ~~> Cut Along All Folds ~~> Stack tissue paper

Fold your tissue paper into 4ths to make honeycomb decorations
I know its not perfect. I happen to love the imperfections in each project!

3 Make stacks of 45-50 sheets each. More will be fuller with smaller sections and less will give you a bigger open space. Below are examples of each.

Showing the difference a few lines of glue makes in making honeycomb decorations
On the left, there were lots of lines of glue between each layer. The center is a 3/4 split, and the right is a 4/5 split. Each is unique and adds depth and character to each frame.

4 Shape cardboard into a shape. For this, draw your shape on cardboard. Make the shape symmetrical, and cut it in half. For my project, these honeycomb decorations were supposed to look like eggs, so I drew my egg, and cut the shape in half. Then I cut the outline out. Set 2 matching pieces cut aside for later.

5 Decide how many sections you would like your honeycomb decorations to have. I suggest either a 3-2 split or a 4-5 split. On a separate sheet of paper a little bigger than the tissue, you are working with, draw your pattern like this (see below). This will be your guide for where to put your glue on each piece of the tissue paper.

Using a template for your honeycomb decorations will save you tons of confusion!
Draw your template out like this

6 Place your guide above your tissue and start with the outer edges. For example, if I was doing a 3-2 split, I would put glue down on the edge, middle and outer edge, and place a new sheet on top of that. My next lines of glue would be on the two lines between the first three. Be sure to do several passes of glue per line.

A clear guide for making honeycomb decorations
Follow this handy guide for gluing your tissue paper to make your party pop!!

7 Continue gluing and alternating lines of glue and tissue paper. Your stack will start to get puffy as you reach the end.

PRO TIP:

After gluing each sheet down, gently but firmly press down the length of each line. This will ensure a great hold.

8 After you have placed the last sheet, its time to place the cardboard cutout. Using your glue stick, create several lines of glue all over the cardboard. Make sure this is well covered. (also make sure it’s not shiny or slick cardboard, as this will not stick well to your tissue honeycomb decorations) Glue one to each side.

Attach cardborad to your tissue to create your honeycomb decorations
I realize that this is not the same as the above. I forgot to finish taking pics while making these!

9 Trim your paper to match the cardboard line, leaving a little to hide the edge.

10 Slowly start to pull the cardboard parts together, unsticking layers if they are slightly stuck. If any of the glue did not hold you will find out in this step. If that is the case, stop and reglue.

The best part of making these honeycomb decorations is opening them up and seeing your handy work!
Slowly ruffle up your honeycomb decoration taking care not to pull too much. Reattach any tissue glue lines that did not hold.

11  It is at this point that you can either stop and attach to a picture frame for a 3D picture with a flat back or continue to separate and pull, joining the cardboard in the center. Both ways are lovely, and look great for any occasion!

12 If you chose to make hanging honeycomb decorations, you will need to attach the cardboard securely. I suggest with either hot glue at the points or string tied through the cardboard. The string gives the advantage, giving something for your decorations to hang from. Make sure that you do not over tighten your string though, as that will cause it to pucker. And no one wants puckered up honeycomb decorations!

Finally! Easy and clear instructions on making honeycomb decorations that won't break the bank!!

That’s it! They are super simple to make and VERY cost effective! Get crazy with it and make them some wild and crazy!

I might have made some pretty cool things, and I may have a lovely garden, but I have many friends who cannot keep the weeds growing, let along a garden. I am here to rescue those people with felt succulents. No green thumb required.

There are so many things you can do with felt succulents!
This is what you can do with your felt succulents!

You can make them and forget about them like you do with every single potted plant you have ever had. Hey, no judgment here.

disclaimer: this post contains affiliate links to products I personally use for this project, along with some suggestions on others. Affiliate links provide compensation at no extra charge to you. To read more about my policies, please see my blog disclosure page.

Making Felt Succulents

These things are so fun to make. And really simple too! All you need is a little felt, hot glue, and eyeshadow.

PRO TIP

I have learned that eyeshadow (loose, not compact) makes a great highlight/lowlight. Just dust where you see fit. ( For this I used L.A. Colors Purple loose shadow.) You can find this color and many more at your local Dollar Tree!

Ship It To Your Local Dollar Tree Store For FREE*!

Great news, you can get all of these things at your local Dollar Tree (minus the actual hot glue gun, although they do carry glue sticks ūüôā )

I have included my pdf file of the shape of each petal along with how many you need for each of your felt succulents! (By signing up for email updates, you get this plus access to the new free party resource library full of great party goods!)

Why I Choose Felt Succulents

I choose felt because it is readily available in a huge range of colors and there is SO much you can do with it. I adore succulents so any chance I get to incorporate them into my designs, I take. Plus, I am lazy and a little too frugal. Those beautiful strange looking plants are NOT cheap! Felt succulents are!

Flat felt succulents are so beautiful!

Things To Remember

If there is anything to take away from each and every one of my tutorials is that life is not perfect. This is especially true for mother nature. Please do not stress when you are making these felt succulents. If your cut is a touch jagged, remember that some succulents do not have smooth petals, but rather rough. If some of your felt cutouts are a little wonky, well take a walk outside and notice each imperfection on a nearby plant. Then stand back and look at the whole thing. Beautiful, despite that flaw.

Your crafts are exactly like that.

Make Your Succulents

The basic instructions are to cut a small circle out of felt and as many “petals” as you need(use the same color as the leaves you are going to use) and glue the petals around the circumference, continuing to the center of the succulent. Use larger petals for the outside petals, and make them smaller towards the center.

Grab these free succulent pdf templates!

Now that you have made your succulents, what will you do with them?

Heres a list of ways you could use your new succulents that won’t die on you:

No maintenance window garden

“Potted Plant” housewarming gift

Fairy garden plants

Pen toppers for the office

Sell them!

Always in season wreath

Rock garden decor

Headbands

Bag embellishments

Add some adorable felt succulent vines to your next project

As you can see, there are so many possibilities to use your new felt succulents. So tell me, what will you use these for? Are you going to make an always in season wreath? Have a look at mine. The total time spent was 2 evenings after the kids went to bed. I worked while I chatted with Matt, caught up on my Netflix shows, and surfed Pinterest. If I had dedicated my attention to only making these, it would have taken around 2 hours, from making the felt succulents to building the wreath.

Because I have saved a ton of money on these things, I want you to also enjoy them. That means that this project is suitable for anyone. Including children. Caution though, please supervise children when working with hot glue. It seriously burns. Trust me.

More Tutorials For Succulents!

If you need even more inspiration, check out these great blogs featuring felt succulents and how to display them!

Lia from liagriffith.com has a two-part post explaining how to build her felt succulents, with some great graphics! Do have a look!

Looking to purchase a premade felt wreath? I found a bunch on Etsy! Have a look at this one here in Honey Crown’s shop! Its adorable and is not themed to any season! ( meaning you can enjoy it year round if you so desire to!)

In this tutorial from Think Make Create you learn how to make your own felt succulent wreath, saving you a few dollars in the process! I love the greens against the gray yarn. Beautiful!

Your Turn

Felt succulents can come in a variety of shapes sizes and colors!

Now its time to leave the nest, so to speak, and make your own felt succulents. I want to see your creations! Share them and any other project you have in my private, ladies only group for hot mess moms on Facebook! Sorry fellas, you are not invited to this party!

Until Next Time,

Have you heard the news? This little blog of mine is now officially a year old. I can not believe that time has gone as fast as it has. I won’t lie to you, there were times that I did not think I would make it. I often give up when things get tough, but I made a promise to stick it through, just one year. If nothing else, than to prove to myself that I could, in fact, stick to one project, and see it though. With that, I want to share with you the best of She’s A Hot Mess, a year in review of sorts.

My Favorite Post One Year Later

It seems to me that we are a lot alike. So much that the most shared and loved post from one year in review is “10 types of moms I want to punch in the face.” Its a comical look at the parents (mothers, usually) that you will meet at the school drop off and pick up. I thought I would get a lot of backlash and flack for writing this, essentially calling out the playground mom-mobs.

Turns out, I was wrong.

After one year in review, this post was shared so many times. It has received tons of comments and lots of pins! It still makes me smile and nod (as if I did not do the writing, lol) every time I read it. If you have not read this one yet, go now!

Pin Me!

The Most Loved Creative Post, Statistically Speaking

According to Google, the most adored post from the last year in review is my solar light snowman, which I lovingly called You Solar Light Up My Life. I took some ordinary yard and house stuff, along with a super strand of solar twinkle lights and made the cutest solar snowman ever!!! Go ahead, read it now so you can make one when Christmas and the Holidays roll around!

An indoor light up snowman just in time for the holidays!
Go ahead and be proud of your self. This light up snowman is so beautiful hanging in the house!

While doing this year in review, I also found that my succulent planter was a hit with you. I would have never thought that someone would take my post and turn it into a team-building exercise. but Cindy did just that. Feedback from you makes things like this more than worth it! Read that post here!

The Most Personal Post

The most personal post I have as of now (aside from my about me page~~> read that here) is my post dealing with anxiety. The post titled How To Deal With Anxiety When Your Mind Is A Hot Mess– tells some of the most personal parts of my journey with mental health. If you struggle with any sort of mental health, please do read it and reach out if necessary.

Companies I Look Forward To Working With, One Year In Review!

I love food. Can you tell? The problem is that I am a wannabe cook. That means that I am not always so great in the kitchen. Thankfully, Cave Tools has brought me a new found confidence and I am making some great headway learning. The one recipe that has been my go-to for any family event is my Hot Pepper Poppers. I no longer show up empty handed, because I can never go anywhere without the request to bring the heat! You need to check that out now if you have any plans for BBQ’s this summer.

Another most loved posts that I have found doing this year in review is my stuffed burgers. Cave Tools delivered again in the design of the press, and my recipe is a must if you like burgers and mushrooms. Making stuffed burgers? Try this burger press and get 15% off! (#ad)

A Year Of Shopping, Reviewed

It is so much fun to create lists for you based on what we love. My most loved shopping list one year later is my Uncommongoods post. If you have never heard of them, you are really missing the best handmade and unique gifting opportunities.  As the name implies, these finds are just that: Uncommon. The top item I would love is the long distance touch lamps. You can read about all of my favorite finds right here!

Of course, my birthday wishlist was the most fun to write. I have never created a list of wants, so to say, and doing so made me so hungry for crafting supplies! (I am a crafting hoarder, and my one year reviewed showed me that. I am not ashamed) If you are looking for the BEST gifting ideas possible, (and maybe a few for yourself) go to see my wishlist!

A Year In Review, Friendship Style

This year, I have made more friends than in my entire life. I created a small but growing group on Facebook for like-minded hot mess moms, I joined Twitter, and I connected with people whom I never would have had I not took this leap! At the 6 month mark, I wrote about my journey and thanked the other bloggers in my community of trusted confidants. If you are a blogger, I wrote this piece for you.

Dear Bloggers, thank you for all that you have done for me thus far!

Along with other bloggers, I have also been exposed to some of the smartest people I believe to have ever met. Doing this year in review has really put that into perspective. This blog is a little creativity, a lot of research. Without the designers and scholars of this world,  I do not think I would have been able to produce any of the content that I have. My biggest thanks go out to those who are doing that every single day.

A Year Of Goals

I am a hot mess. Every day, I wake up with a plan. Every day, my focus is a little different. My goals were clear one year ago. To write consistently for one year. I achieved my goals. I have bigger and better plans for the year ahead, and I can not wait to share with you each new idea that comes to life.

The Year Ahead

Look back at my year in review. I will not normally write down what I plan to do for an entire year. So many things can happen in that time that you just can not plan for. But I will say this: I plan to continue to be heard. I have so much more to say and do, I couldn’t stop if I wanted to. I have finally found my calling, my purpose. So, stay tuned.

If you are not already subscribed, nows the chance to do that. I just introduced the subscriber’s party goods resource library, where I am giving away goodies for your next themed party! Soon, there will be an option to upgrade to personalized party packages, and there are TONS of designs in the works.

Seriously, stop throwing boring parties. Your kids will thank you later.

So, now that you have seen my year in review, what would you like to see more of? Are you looking for a super specific party design that I can help you with? Maybe you are looking for your next project and you have an idea, but no idea how to execute it. Drop me a line, let’s chat, and take your party from idea to reality!

Talk to you soon!

Deciding on a vacation destination is nerve-wracking and often times stressful. You want to make sure that there will be something for everyone to enjoy, and finding an area that caters to the entire family is the biggest chore. After hours of researching, Colorado Springs was the obvious winner.

~UPDATE: courtesy of VisitCOS.com, the cog rail will not be running in the foreseeable future, but does give some great alternatives! If you are looking for a senic rail ride, check out  Royal Gorge Route Railroad. Per the website, they provide Americas most spectacular rail journey.

Aside from the stunning views year round, there are other fun things to do in the gardens. For example, you can learn about the new species of dinosaur, at the theophytalia-kerri exhibit.

Other Things To Do In Colorado Springs

Because some of my family is more adventurous than other parts of my family, I added rock climbing to the itinerary. It seems to me that if you are in rock country, you should at least enjoy it and climb them suckers! The Colorado Climbing Company has toured and guides right in Colorado Springs, and the bigger the crowd the better the price (good thing we go big or go home right?). These guys have a proven track record of putting safety first! Check them out when you book your trip!

If water is more your sport (like the other half of our family) then you must check out the rafting packages nearby. They range in price, and experience level. I searched for a bit and found one that you can take most of the family on, as long as they are at least 5 years old. Prices vary, but the package we found was for ages 6+ starting at $59 for a half day of rafting the Big Horn Sheep Canyon.

Planning Your Sleeping Arrangements

There is plenty of lodging within Colorado Springs, as well as nearby the surrounding areas. Yes, there are the traditional Hilton and Marriott, as well as a Best Western, but, there are also more authentic and memorable places to stay as well.

Camping in Colorado Springs
Instead of a fancy hotel, why not opt for a tent against nature for the night?

We found a cabin with Mountiandale Cabins and Rv Resort that will suit us fantastically. It is a little cabin in the woods, sleeps up to six and is under $200 a nights stay. Not that you need t.v. in the woods, but it also includes satellite cable.

Oh, the places you will go…

Before we found the cabin, the plan was to camp. Colorado is a beautiful area any time of year and camping amongst its beauty would have been a pleasure. Cheyenne Mountian State park allows camping year round, with 51 full hook up sites ($30) and 10 basic walk-up tent sites ($20). They offer showers, which are coin operated, and a little store with supplies.

Permanent Vacation Spot

After our visit, I have a feeling that we will want to make it our permanent vacation spot, with plans to move in the future. After looking at tons of sites to help newly moved or aspiring to do so, I found this website tool to help me make the best choice for finding Colorado Springs Real Estate easier.
