Do you ever look at an item and think ” I know I could improve that/ make that look better/ make that into something delightful!”? That is what happened to a gifted old guitar that was given to the kids. Neither has really any interest in learning to play and often only pulled it out to be irritating when it needed to be quiet. So one day, I looked at it and thought, that can be the coolest planter ever, with a few slight (big) improvements and changes. And so, that is how an upcycled guitar was born.

As soon as I had the project in my head, nothing was going to dissuade me from finishing it. Sometimes, I tend to start a challenging project, and half way thru I stop. Never to return to it again. But I was inspired, and I had the perfect recipient in mind for the upcycled guitar planter: my favorite teacher from the kid’s school was leaving and this would be the PERFECT gift, as he was a music teacher/art teacher.

I hope my steps below inspire you to find something that is junk and turn it into something absolutely wonderful and useful again.

 Sanding Down Your Guitar

Ready to sand your upcycled guitar?
Only sand the parts you want to keep not painted. Try to save some of the original finish to keep this upcycled guitar authentic

Before you put that paper to the beautiful (or maybe not so… yet) varnish, consider the look you are wanting to achieve. If you can, remove all the parts that you can and place them in a bag for later. This includes the strings.

Sanding your upcycled guitar is not hard or time consuming
You don’t have to sand down to the “bones” of the guitar, but removing the varnish is critical to get the paint to stick

Medium grit sandpaper should do the trick. Don’t worry about removing all of the finish, but do make sure you sand enough that it will give the paint you will apply in a few steps.

 Clean the dust

Using a damp cloth (read: NOT SOAKED) wipe down the guitar thoroughly. Make sure all of the dust is removed. This will ensure your paint will stick without any residue under. Check that you are satisfied with the removal of the varnish. If not, repeat steps 1 & 2 until you are satisfied.

Selecting and Painting your Upcycled guitar

Originally, I planned to use chalk paint. But… I am totally intimidated by the process, and to be honest, I do not want to test a new method on someone’s gift. Acrylic paint by Plaid company in antique parchment suited my needs and budget. (local Walmart for $.50 a bottle)

PRO TIP

Take this advice, don’t use a bristle brush for this project. Instead, use a foam brush or mini roller. Brush marks are no fun to try to hide, and you will use a lot more paint with a brush.

Apply lightly and allow to dry. Paint several layers on all of the sanded parts.

Adding A Watercolor Effect with Acrylic Paint

A flat color might be ok for some folks. But I tend to love color and hints of something more. I scoured the internet (read: mostly Pinterest) to find a new way to add a touch of color without overwhelming the entire piece. I found a drip tutorial here and decided to add my own flair. Follow my steps for a rustic finish of water down paints.

Painting an upcycled guitar with acrylic paints
This is what my watercolor effect looks like after sealing. This portion of the project took about 3 hours, allowing for dry time between coats.

Select your paint. I chose basic craft paint in antique parchment for the base. The layer colors are teal deep brown and metallic gold. After you have selected the paint colors, uncap and fill the cap with water. Add one drop of paint to each cap and mix well.

Painting an upcycled guitar with watercolor acrylic paint
This shot shows the detail of watercolor acrylic paints. I adore the colors together!

Using a wet brush, dip your paintbrush into one color. Firmly press the tip to your upcycled guitar. You will notice the paint running down and dripping. Continue this process until you are satisfied with the color.

Finish off the paint process with 2 layers of acrylic sealant. This will protect your paint from flaking and chipping.

PRO TIP:

Allow each color to dry before adding the next layer. If the paint is still fully wet, it will mix with the other colors and turn muddy.

Make A Grow Bag

I had some weed blocker fabric sitting on the porch that was not being used. This fabric is a mesh plastic but is perfect for holding in the dirt and baby plants we are going to add next. To make a bag, simply cut off enough fabric to make a pocket. Secure the edges of the fabric on 2 sides with E6000 glue. After the glue has dried, turn your bag inside out so that the seams are inside. Fold the top down to clean up the edges a bit.Make a grow bag for your upcycled guitar

Putting An Upcycled Guitar Back Together

With no musical background, I have no idea what I am doing when putting this thing back together. It’s pretty straightforward as long as you saved the parts when you took it apart. I opted to only use 3 of the 5 strings, to keep it simple and help hold the plants in the grow bag.

PRO TIP:

Add a tiny bit of dirt to the bottom of the grow bag before putting it into your repurposed upcycled guitar. This will help weight it enough to pull it down and not bunch up in the center.

I did things a little backward and you can take advantage of that. Put together the upcycled guitar parts EXCEPT for the strings. After you have done all that, now it is time to plant. (My favorite part)

PlantsLay your upcycled project at an angle. Select your plants (I adore succulents, as you know, and they are perfect for our guitar) and plant tightly together. Succulents, especially the hen and chicks variety love to be cramped and grow quite well. At the very end, leave a little room at the top to water.

Now you can restring your guitar. I used one string to hold the left side and one on the right to hold that side. And the third will go straight up the middle to help things stay.

PRO TIP:

Do not tighten the strings tight at all. Just enough to hold the plants, but not so tight that it cuts the delicate leaves. Rather, a happy medium of the both.

Give The Repurposed Gift of an Upcycled Guitar

Need a unique gift idea? Try an upcycled guitar!I had so much fun making this repurposed guitar. And even more, I loved giving it. I truly hope this has inspired you to create your own upcycled project. Don’t forget, that you do not need a guitar to complete this project. A violin cello or fiddle would work as well. (I would love to do one of these 🙂

If you found this inspiring and made something similar, I would love to see it. Share your work in the comments or email me directly! (That is my favorite part of my job, getting emails from readers who have been inspired enough to make their own version of a project and then sharing it with me!)

Do you want to enjoy a water park without the chance of sunburn? How do you feel about well-trained lifeguards who are very attentive to all the guests? What about a waterslide that has a 54-foot drop? Are you looking for a family vacation that will delight everyone in the family? If you are, let me tell you about my families 24-hour vacation to The Great Wolf Lodge.

~disclaimer: this post is not affiliated with the Great Wolf Lodge. This is just an informative post to provide helpful information. I was not compensated for this post.~

A family vactation at the Great Wolf Lodge is just what we need!
As we started our adventure, the kids could not contain the excitement that flowed thru them!

Planning The Perfect Famly Vacation

If you are looking to make the most out of a vacation, your starting point should be The Great Wolf Lodge. With rooms to house your entire family, there is plenty to choose from. Our room consisted of two queen beds and a fold out couch. Your choices are plenty, with a few themed rooms to choose from (like the Kidscamp suit, featuring a tent sleeping area and bunk beds, or the wolf den, featuring an in suit cabin!)

The beds are soft and comfy and plenty of blankets and pillows are in the room as well.

Prepare Yourself For The Great Wolf Waterpark

The waterpark at the Great Wolf lodge is so large, its impossible to capture it in one shot!
it is not possible to capture the entire park in one shot. This is just a little taste of what you will find at your next family vacation at The Great Wolf Lodge

Before you go to The Great Wolf Lodge, it helps (or would have helped me) to do a little background. You absolutely need to know that the waterpark at The Great Wolf Lodge is kept at a steady 84 degrees. Add that to the humidity that comes with an indoor pool and you are setting your self up to be a hot mess if you do not plan. Dress in your bathing suit before you get to the water park. If you choose to dress at the park, be prepared to sweat as soon as you walk thru those doors.

If you are bringing your smaller crue, measure them before you even get there. Nothing worse than a little one thinking that they get to ride the Howlin Tornado to only make it up the stairs and be told no. If they are not 48 inches, they must have a red wristband. Please keep in mind that this is to ensure that everyone stays safe.

Inside The Great Wolf Lodge Waterpark

Get a good look from the outside, because inside is even bigger. The park is much bigger than it looks from the outside. Inside, you will find Fort Mackenzie, a giant climbing structure with tons of ways to get wet. At the very top is a giant bucket that fills and as it gets heavier, it tips. When it does, everything in front of that bucket gets DRENCHED with water. The first time will startle you if you are not fully prepared.

You will also find a  splash pond designed for little ones with slides and toys to play with. The water is a little warmer here also. On the other side of Fort Mackenzie, you will find the stairs that lead to the Howlin Tornado, which is the largest water slide at The Great Wolf Lodge, dropping you a full six stories! Video credit to youtube below.

The stairs that take you to the big slide will also take you to aAlbertafalls slide, and the river canyon run. Both are super fun and included as long as the rider is at least 48″ tall. Matthew who has always been a little nervous in the water rode Alberta Falls waterslide, alone and more than once! They are a must do on the list of things you MUST do when you are at The Great Wolf Lodge.

Ride The Waves Without Being Swept To Sea

The great wolf lodge has a wave pool too! While the water slides were mine and Bugs favorites while on our mini staycation, the wave pool was for sure Matthew and my niece’s favorite place to be at the lodge. Sometimes steady, the waves would roll randomly. I recommend that if your child is entering the wave pool they wear a life jacket. Let me be clear. These waves are no joke. The pool itself is relatively shallow with the deepest part only 5 foot deep. But when the waves start, it changes everything.

A few times the waves were so strong and so fast I was pushed under and back into the people behind me. They are strong and powerful. And, as long as properly and fully supervised, the kids will fully enjoy riding the waves.

The Arcade At Great Wolf Lodge

As hard as it is to get out of the pool at the end of the day, it is even harder to get the kids to leave the arcade. With games galore, and prizes to be won, it’s like a mini Vegas for kids right there in the hotel. Jammies are welcome, and instead of having to lug around a pocket full of tokens you get a card similar to a debit to swipe at each game.

Do not miss the arcade while you are at the Great Wolf Lodge!
Ending the night in the arcade was the perfect end to a wonderful day at the great wolf lodge!

After you spend your coins and have collected the tickets you must convert them in a machine. Chuck E Cheese style, you feed the tickets into the counter machine. But, unlike the giant mouse, this loads them on to your player card, making it dual purpose. The cards are scanned, the prizes are deducted from the card. And, at the end, you can also combine the cards to just one.

Other Things To Do and See At The Great Wolf

Hold on now, that is not the end of the story yet. It’s not just an arcade and waterpark at the great wolf. Oh no, not for a long shot! You will also find a Spa, glow golf, an insane obstacle course! Want the kids to take a break from the pool? Send them on a magic quest throughout the hotel with their magic wands and maps!

Got a bunch of younger wolf cubs on your trip? They have some fun planned for them if the waterpark is only for short times! Wake up with yoga, get crafty after lunch, and wrap up the day with a clock tower show and a bedtime story.

The Only DownSides

If you do not enjoy big crowds, the great wolf lodge might not be the destination for you!
This is just a glimpse of the number of people you will find on any given day at the Great Wolf Lodge

All good things come with a few not so good right? This place is huge, and that means that there is a ton of things to do. I really do not think that its possible to see the entirety of the hotel water park and all of the other amenities of the Great Wolf Lodge in 24 hours.  And the number of people who are also looking to have a good time with the family.

Even though everything is clearly marked as to where you are and the other areas around the hotel, its still entirely possible to get lost, or even worse, lose one of the kiddos. Because of this, I would designate am “if we get separated” place to meet.

The Impeccably Trained and  Attentive Staff

Let me set the scene: We saw a pup costume and the kids wanted to take a picture. As soon as the picture was snapped, my neice decided to disappear into the water park. ( In her defense, she is fast AF). An employee saw the look on my face and jumped literally into action. He saw us walk up to the doors together and knew which kid I was referring to. Not even two minutes passed and he was walking back up the stairs away from the water with her. How to have a great family vacation at the great wolf lodge

Two hours later, he found us and made sure that we were all together, and that I felt secure in being there. This guy did not have to find us again or jump so quickly into action. So on behalf of my family Javie from Grand Mound Wa, thank you. You, along with every other staff member we encountered in our stay treated us as if we were family and our needs truly mattered.

Would I go Back To The Great Wolf Lodge?

Now that I know what to expect, I would absolutely go back to the lodge. I would plan to stay more than one night so that I could get the full experience. And, I would recommend it to any family with kids. You will feel good knowing that this place treats you like you are their only priority, and I really appreciate that. Good bye to the wonderful Great Wolf Lodge!

Now that you have a little more info about the greatest family vacation spot, will you go? Let me know in the comments below!

Let the good times begin at the Great Wolf Lodge!

I’m back today to share with you another delicious recipe from my kitchen! This wouldn’t be nearly as easy or tasty without the help of CaveTools. This smoked chicken recipe takes a chicken to a whole new level, with very little actual work. If you have never smoked a bird before this is a great introduction to using a barbeque as a smoker, and will give you a taste of what you have been missing. If you know a good smoked bird when you see one, just look at that pictures below, and you know I don’t need to say more!

~Disclaimer: I received this tool in exchange for the Root Beer Chicken post. I still use this tool often and love that I get to share this recipe with you. All of the thoughts here are my own.  And there are affiliate links in this post. That means that if you purchase something via a recommended link I provide, I will make a small commission for my efforts, at no cost to you. Also, the discount provided is generously provided by my friends at Cavetools.~Beer can chicken discount, perfect for smoked chicken!!

Ingredients For The Perfect Smoked Chicken

1 whole chicken, rinsed and patted dry

Beer Can Chicken seasoning (McCormick makes my favorite)

1 cup chicken stock

1/2 cup soy sauce

1 tbs fresh garlic

Other Items Needed

Wood Chips

Charcoal

Prep Your Bird

We love to eat chicken prepared on the beer can roaster so much that we often buy a two pack of whole chicken. Pop them in the freezer until you are ready to cook and then follow the steps below to prep your chicken for smoking.

Smoked chicken on the bbq is so delicious and so easy to do!!After you have thawed and rinsed and removed the innards from the bird, you will need a good rub for the outside. I recommend Beer Can Chicken Seasoning by McCormick for this recipe, but we also love to rub them down with coarse salt and lemon and garlic pepper. To each his own! Make sure that you are generous with your seasoning and get into each nook and cranny of the outside. Put back in the fridge until your wood chips are ready.

Setting Up The “Beer” Can

We have used this portion of the beer can chicken rack for tons of different liquids, including beer and root beer! For this recipe, you will need 1 cup of chicken stock, and a half a cup of soy sauce. Top the liquid with fresh garlic and replace the cap. Make sure you lock it into your beer can rack so there is no chance of it falling or spilling.

How to get a perfectly smoked chicken, every time!

Setting Up Your Smoker

We are so fortunate to have a smoker grill, but if you do not, that’s ok. CaveTools has really thought of everything and has a smoker box just for those who need. Check that out here~~> Amazon.

Smoked chicken is easy when you know exactly what to do!
Set your bbq up like this for indirect heating for your smoked chicken

To begin, Matt usually chops us up some alder or cherry wood. I love the taste of alder and chicken, so that is what we use. Alternatively, use pre-chopped and ready to use wood chips. Get those here ~~> Amazon. Next get your coals going. Place your wood chips on top of the coals, and continue to feed the coals until your smoked chicken is done.

How Long Does A Smoked Chicken Take To Cook

This is such a tricky question to answer. When I looked up the recommended cooking time, I found 4 hours. Here is what we found while cooking our chicken:Ready for a delicious smoked chicken dinner?

Your chicken needs to be fully thawed before you begin to cook. A partially frozen bird will add a ton of time to your cooking and may dry out the meat while cooking. Try to regulate the temp inside the bbq. I recommend around 300 degrees. And finally, the best way to time your chicken cooking time is to check the internal temp. It must be at least 165 to consume. My chicken took 2.5 hours to smoke, from start to end!

A juicy perfectly smoked chicken is not hard to acheive with the right tools and a few tips!
Pin for later

Tips For A Perfectly Smoked Chicken

While your chicken is smoking you will notice juices begin to drip into the pan. Use them to baste your smoked chicken. This will keep the meat moist.

Smoked chicken needs to be turned often. To keep things even, make sure you turn a 1/4 turn each time you feed the wood chips to the coals.

The skin will get dark, but it is NOT burned. The smoke darkens the meat pretty quickly but doesn’t burn because there is no direct flame.

TEMP YOUR SMOKED CHICKEN!!! Regardless of the method, you must temp your poultry before you eat it. Internal temp should be 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Please do not consume or serve smoked chicken at anything lower than 165!

More Than 1 Dinner Meal

Using the juices from your smoked chicken is a great way to baste and add flavor!
Using a large ladle spoon, pour the juices back over the chicken. You can thank me later!

Last night, we let our smoked chicken cool, and then we removed ALL the chicken from the bones. Then we made chicken salad sammiches. Mmmmm. If you have never tried a smoked chicken salad, you are missing out my friend.

Tonight, we are having chicken tacos. So you see, you can get about two meals out of one chicken, making this a super frugal meal!

What Are You Planning For Dinner?

Are you planning to try this smoked chicken recipe? Do you have a beer can roaster? What do you think of the rack from Cavetools? Let me know in the comments!

Well, that’s all for today, because it’s now time to start my chicken tacos!!

Until next time,

Marlene

This year, I have noticed a ton more birds than any of the years before. Maybe I never noticed them before because I was not working at home, or maybe its a take over of the birds. Whatever the case, its nice to see them and I am so glad they are here. Something about a family of birds (as long as it’s not crows, you know how I feel about those) singing a song in my yard that is so soothing. And that is the inspiration for our short and sweet tutorial today. We are going to make an eco-friendly DIY bird feeder. Gather your supplies and meet me in the garden!

Making a DIY bird feeder is as easy as 1-2-3!

~disclaimer: there are affiliate links within this post. that means that if you make a purchase on behalf of my recommendation, I might make a small commission. to learn more, please see my blog disclosure~

To Make Your DIY Bird Feeder, You Will Need:

Jiffy Seed Pots
Peanut Butter
Bird Seed
Jute twine for hanging

I chose Jiffy Seed Pots for 2 reasons. 1) They kinda suck for starting seeds and 2) because they suck for seed starting, we had a TON on hand, not being used. The added bonus of using them is that they are COMPLETLY biodegradable and bird-friendly. You can get them at your local Walmart (maybe, they do tend to sell rather quickly) or on Amazon.

Steps 1-2-& 3 For A DIY Bird Feeder

A DIY bird feeder for kids!
Poke a hole

Step 1 Poke Holes in the bottom sides of your jiffy pots. Run jute twine thru both holes and tie at the top.

Making eco friendly DIY bird feeder on the blog today
add some peanut butter

Step 2 Smear with peanut butter. This step is fun for kids. Simply have them place the pot over their closed hand. This step is a little messy but fun!

Make a DIY bird feeder with the kids for a little outdoor fun!
Add Some Seeds

Step 3 Roll the peanut butter covered pot in a large wide bowl of bird seed. Cover the peanut butter with seeds and press lightly. This step is also a bit messy.

Feed Your Birds

Add a simple DIY bird feeder to your yard!
It’s soooo cute!!

This project is so fast and fun, it is a great way to get the kids involved in taking care of nature. After you are finished with each DIY bird feeder, simply hang anywhere in the garden where the birds frequent. We made 3 of them and lined the yard hanging near the rain chain, the succulent hanger and on a shepherds hook amidst the ferns.Fun little DIY bird feeder project for kids!

Need Some Creative Inspiration For The Garden?

I turn to Pinterest for just about everything. Seriously, even if I have a strange bug bite, I skip Google and go straight to the big boy- Pinterest. If you need some creative gardening inspiration, follow me! Right now, my feed is covered in beautiful flowers, succulents, bird feeders, and so much more! Below are my gardening boards just waiting for you to follow!

How does a night of fun and games sound with the kids tonight? If your family is anything like mine, it usually sounds like someone getting their feelings hurt because they didn’t win. Tonight, we played Rabbit Pirates “Shoot For The Loot” and I more than half expected that to be the case. I will be the first to admit that I was shocked that the only whining of ANY sort came at the end of the game…. when it was over and time for showers and bed!

That my friends, is a game night win!

What’s Inside The Rabbit Pirates Game Box?

What's inside the Pirate Rabbits game? Its a pretty set up thats for sure!
Inside Pirate Rabbits Shoot For The Loot Game!

Inside the box, all nicely packaged you will find three boards, called islands. There is also “shot cards” which is essentially your ammo. And, small round tiles called loot.

To play Rabbit Pirates, each player (up to 4) selects a player card from the deck. They then take turns laying face down their shot card under the character place holer on the board.

The cards are then flipped, revealing the tools, and the number of points. The player who laid down the highest number card wins the loot for that island.

What I have come to expect from RoosterFinWe love Rabbit Pirates! Such a fun game to play!

If you have been around for a while now, you know this family loves RoosterFin! We have played many kids games, and not one has disappointed us or let us down in more than one area!

The game itself is of the highest quality. You even get some great bonus material, that we LOVE to look at before the game starts. Bug always picks the toughest looking female character, and JR loves to pick the most stylish male character.

In Rabbit Pirates, along with the standard characters that we love to see, there is also a super glossy huge fold out that’s double-sided. One side, (in full color) is clear and easy to understand instructions. The other side tells a story and is honestly very beautiful. It tells all about the family, the history, and the quest to be the win Rabbit Pirates.

Pirate Rabbits comes with lots of bonus material!
Little details like character cards and bonus material show the thoughtfulness behind this game.

The Learning Side Of Shooting For The Loot

Don’t tell your kids this, but there is a teaching lesson hidden in Rabbit Pirates. At the end of the game, you get to open all of your “loot” that you have won. There is an assortment of different chests, containing rabbit dollars, in increments of 50, 30, 10 and a rotten fish tile that is -5. So adding and subtracting, but they don’t even realize that they are doing math! All they know is

“Hey! I got a rotten fish and have to take 5 coins off my total! Man!”

The game is pretty quick, but playing more than one full game is almost a MUST! (just don’t skip bath time, they should be ok!)

We Love Rabbit Pirates Shoot For The Loot

Shoot For The Loot with this Rabbit Pirates game!
Treasure chests that hold the loot you are trying to win! Each chest holds an amount of coins or, rotten fish that detract from the total points earned!

So here’s a recap of what you just read, in case you are like me and a skimmer 🙂

What’s your favorite game to play as a family? We own several games made by RoosterFin and each one is unique and puts a nice spin on things. We could (and have) make an entire day out of playing games. It’s nice to turn off the electronics and just bond as a family. You can tell that they take pride in bringing families back together, having fun, and creating memories.
