Not too long ago, I had the privilege of joining the Animal Cruelty Unit of the Humane Society on a ride along.
What an eye-opening experience.
These people are amazing and do amazing work. They don’t just help animals that are victims, they educate pet owners, so they can improve their situation. No one wants to break up a family, so the Humane Society gives owners the materials and resources they need so their pets can live comfortably.
What struck me was the lack of technology the Humane Society workers had in their vans. After a few hours on the road, they had to go back to the office to get their next assignments and to complete paperwork. It was a huge time suck. If they had a computer in the van, like police officers do, they could complete their paperwork on the go, giving more animals (and families) the chance to be helped.
Then and there I decided to do something, to take action, so fewer animals have to wait for help. My pledge of $100,000 will go to update technology at the Humane Society, and get them much needed computers for their vans. I know how important pets are in a family, and it’s my hope that this donation will ensure fewer animals face cruelty or neglect.
I believe in the mission of the Humane Society and what it stands for, and personally, I owe a lot to them. Over the years, I’ve rescued two dogs from the Michigan Humane Society and both have brought me and my family incredible joy.
Shadow was my first rescue. A black Lab mix, he went everywhere with me—running, the office, errands. He really was my shadow, and I was lucky enough to have him in my life for 17 years.
I mourned Shadow when he left us. I didn’t know when I’d be ready to have another dog.
But four years ago, my daughters and I were at the Bow Wow Brunch, a fundraising event hosted by the Humane Society. As I was browsing the silent auction, two of my three daughters said there was a dog I had to see. I fended them off as long as I could, after all, I didn’t want another dog. Eventually I caved and that’s when I met Jessi.
One look and I was sold. She was such a sweet-tempered Terrier mix that I couldn’t resist. Within hours, we were at the pet store stocking up on everything Jessi would need.
I can’t imagine our family without her. In fact, when we moved the Mike Morse Law Firm to its current location, I negotiated the lease so Jessi could come to our “no dogs allowed” office with me, just like Shadow did.
I hit the jackpot with Shadow and Jessi. I think everyone should rescue a dog instead of paying for one through a breeder. These dogs deserve a forever home and in return, they’ll be a loyal and loving member of your family for years to come. It is a true win-win.

Detroit saw some major changes as soon as Olympia Development announced the planned development of Little Caesars World Headquarters. The establishment is expected to be built at Woodward Avenue and Columbia Street. Along with the restaurant, a retail establishment has also been planned on Columbia Street and according to the latest news, the plans seem to be well in motion for a retail promenade next to Fox Theatre.
According to Olympia Development’s announcement, a “European-style promenade boasting Cobblestone paving, festoon lights and al fresco dining space” is being planned for construction on Detroit’s famous Columbia Street. Around 40,000 square feet of land in the area has been especially reserved for the restaurant and retail area. With new tenants expected to appear as early as this summer, Olympia’s plans seem to be changing Detroit permanently for the better by introducing new innovative projects.
As per the initial plans, there is a strong expectation of seeing ten brand new storefronts open up along and across the promenade. Everything is going to be anchored by Detroit’s landmark Fox Theatre and Olympia’s own under construction Little Caesar World Headquarters.
When questioned about any future plans they might have, Olympia Development confirmed that they have a plethora of projects for Detroit and Michigan in the future. The announcement included a reveal that they had indeed started initial façade work on the Detroit Life Building. The building is just at the end of the block from the promenade. More plans are basically rumors coming from Crain, which suggest that there are several possible developments coming from Olympia. The potential new plans include a couple of new towers close to Comerica Park and a long awaited retail area at l-75. These plans have not been confirmed by Olympia as yet.
Whether Olympia Development does end up going through with all the rumored products, or if it takes it slow and steady approach, Detroit benefits. The retail promenade will add an entire new facet to the legendary city, and without a doubt all of Michigan will benefit from the development.

In some fantastic news, seven of Michigan’s chefs and restaurants have qualified for this year’s James Beard Foundation Awards’ semi-finals. The Seven Metro Detroit, as they are referred to, have been nominated in a number of different categories and have brought pride to the state of Michigan.
The nominations in all the varied categories are as follows:
Michigan’s only entry into this category happens to be the Lady of the House, based in Corktown. The Lady of the House, that opened in September of last year, is one of 28 restaurants competing in the category. Traditionally, all the restaurants nominated for this honor experience an increase in turnout very soon. Chef Kate Williams can expect her restaurant to gather some very well-deserved fame soon enough.
Making her way into the nomination for Rising Star Chef is Detroit’s young genius, Lena Sareini. The people shortlisted for this honor are normally chefs under or at 30 who have had a major impact on the industry despite their young age. Ms. Sareini works at Selden Standard in Detroit as a pastry chef.
The restaurants shortlisted for this accolade must have been open for at least five years and be renowned for their customer service and hospitality. Michigan’s only entry for this accolade is Zingerman’s Delicatessen. Located in Ann Arbor, at 422 Detroit St., this place has nothing but the love of its customers.
Detroit’s Sister Pie holds the honor of hosting this year’s semi-finalist. Lisa Ludwinski, of the fine establishment, has been nominated in this category for the second time in two years. She continues to make the entire state proud.
Much like the talented Ms Ludwinski, cocktail lounge Standby at 225 Gratiot, Detroit, is present once again on the semi-final list for Outstanding Bar Program.
This year, Detroit has the honor of having two of its chefs named in the Best Chef: Great Lakes category. The Best Chef category is divided among 10 different regions. For this year, James Rigato of Hazel Park’s Mabel Gray, and Thomas Lents from the Apparatus Room are representing Michigan. It is Rigato’s third consecutive appearance on the shortlist and Lents’ first. They are competing with 20 other chefs from across the Great Lakes area.

Kehinde Wiley has made history with his contribution to Barack Obama’s portrait. He has become the first African-American in the history of the country to have developed a portrait of a president for the National Portrait Gallery. It is indeed a massive achievement and is a moment of pride for America’s black community. If you are interested in checking out more of Wiley’s excellent work, visit the Detroit Institute of Arts where more of Wiley’s work is on display.
Wiley is particularly famous for his modernistic paintings of black individuals. A graduate of Yale University, Wiley tries to combine modern aesthetic with Old Master framework. His best-known work is 2007’s “Officer of the Hussars”, currently on display at the Detroit Institute of Arts. The painting has been featured in the popular TV show “Empire” and happens to be one of the most famous national works of art in the modern era.
The portrait itself shows the former president in his normal garments, surrounded by a ton of beautiful and lush vegetation. The portrait is striking, and although having an old-fashioned style, it feels thoroughly modern and unique. Wiley goes with his own artistic code of “bringing visual codes into convergence.” By having so many different and strong colors juxtaposed in such a unique and distinctive manner, Wiley has not only lived up to his creed but also went further beyond all that he has previously accomplished.
Monday was held the unveiling of a portrait of Michelle Obama. This portrait of the former First Lady was handled by Amy Sherald. Sherald hails from Baltimore and has made a big name for herself all around the country. It was certainly a big day for both artists and the Obamas as well.
It was also a big day for Detroit and the state of Michigan. The very first portrait of a president in this millennium happened to come from one of Detroit’s own. Once again, Detroit has proudly made its way into the records of US history, and it doesn’t plan on stopping just yet. This is obviously a big win for Michigan as well since its principal city made its way to the major headlines again.

A short visit to the Cookie STEM Academy brought with it many unique and fantastic experiences. A number of kindergarten students happened to be playing and drawing on an electronic whiteboard, apparently taking part in an educational exercise. The next task at hand for them involved playing word games with cookie monsters. It was an entirely different method of teaching.
However, this method of teaching and sharing knowledge may just become the norm for all of Detroit if Nikolai Vitti has his way. The Superintendent of the district plans to place such electronic whiteboards in every single classroom, while also handing out a personal laptop to every single student. The plan is supposed to be done in the next five years if Mr. Vitti is able to secure appropriate funding. The start of his plans for Detroit, every single student in the district will have their own laptops.
As of now, Mr Vitti’s vision has been applied to three schools in Detroit. These schools are Cookie STEM Academy, Nolan Elementary-Middle School, and Bagley Elementary School of Journalism and Technology. Through the programs the schools have been able to obtain new technology for teaching purposes.
The technology is supposed to be integrated into traditional teaching methods and not replace them. As Mr Vitti himself offers, “This isn’t about replacing teachers, this is about supplementing the core curriculum. It is my opinion that all technology can do is enhance learning.”
In the teaching method advocated by this program, both the teacher and the gadgets combine to help students learn. Initially, the teachers present their lectures and lessons like they normally would, but this is then followed by the electronic tools. The students move to them in groups and interact with a number of different educational programs that offer anything from revision material to quizzes. Not only do students learn to interact with computers, but they also test their knowledge in a way that is conducive to more learning and better knowledge transfer.
This teaching method has been praised and supported by a number of educational experts and education activists all over the country. According to studies that support these methods, the children get to learn at their own pace with technology. Furthermore, it allows children to learn more while also entertaining them. Teaching with technology makes learning fun for children.
This program is a huge step for Detroit as well as the entire state of Michigan. If it all goes according to Mr Vitti’s planning, a bright future for Michigan is ensured. It is a program that marries the outstanding schooling of our teachers with the fantastic customizability and immense capability of technology. It is a great way to teach children and might become the only way soon.

Detroit Zoological Society recently announced the construction of the Great Lakes Nature Center. The building is planned to go up in Macomb County, whose representatives also participated in the project’s unveiling. The entire project will cost around $10 million to complete and will be done on the Macomb County shore.
The Nature Center will become the largest establishment of its kind in the entire Great Lakes region. The center shows is being built for a number of different reasons. First of all, it is a place for nature to be conserved and preserved. Secondly, it is a fantastic opportunity to educate people about conservation of the Earth’s resources and how to actually go about it. With exhibits for a variety of different animals guaranteed, and a planned conservation effort to save endangered fish by the shore, this facility may just end up as a national jewel.
The announcement of the project came a day after President Donald Trump’s plan of cutting down conservation funds for the Green Lakes region became public. The planned cut amounts to around 90% of the total funds and is bound to be highly controversial.
The announcement comes as a complete opposite of the President’s policy. The people behind the nature centre hope for it to receive a warm reception by both officials and the public. It shows motivation and tells that the private sector is passionate about conserving nature and protecting the Earth.
According to the Detroit Zoological Society President, Mr Ron Kagan, “We’re thrilled to announce this. We’re hoping this will generate interest, especially in people who want to invest in Macomb County.”
The entire facility measures up to approximately 200,000 square feet of area. The development is planned to take alongside Lake St. Clair. The facility is going to contain a number of activities for visitors to participate in. The offered activities include science shows, astronomy, and even birding. The entire project is supposed to be funded by private investors and a group of philanthropists.
Macomb County is incredibly enthusiastic about the project, as shown in this statement by the county’s executive, “It’s a great opportunity to get people connected in the Great Lakes.” All parties involved expect the Great Lakes Nature Centre to attract anywhere around 150,000 to 200,000 people every year. From elementary students, to zoologists, to conservationists, to the curious public, the facility awaits everyone with open arms.
The nature facility is a big moment for the state of Michigan and for the entire Great Lakes region. It will not only help conserve the nature in the area, but it will also help educate people about conserving nature. It will certainly lead to a brighter future for all of Michigan and the Great Lakes region as well.
