    2020 is a very special year (fill in crappy or any other word you find fitting), so we can use some extra motivation to finish this year.

    What's an Advent Calendar?

    If you’ve never heard of these calendars, they are special calendars with 24 numbered “doors” used to count the days until Christmas.

    Maybe you’re wondering if you start at 24 or 1 on an advent calendar. And that’s a valid question because they both make sense.

    Advent Calendars start December 1st. On December 1st, you open door number 1. The next day, you open door #2 -and so forth until door #24 on the 24th of December.

    Half the fun is looking for the right number because the doors are in no particular order.

    These calendars can be made of cardboard, fabric, or small wooden boxes. It doesn’t really matter as long as they can hide the little daily gift.

    Obviously, they can also be digital now. Digital Advent Calendars are great for Instagram, Facebook, or Pinterest, although a real one with physical gifts is wonderful.

    Advent Calendars seem to be of German origin (like me) and date back to the 19th century (not like me).  In the beginning, they were simple chalk marks religious families made to count down the days until Christmas Eve.

    At the beginning of the 20th century, paper Christmas Calendars with little images appeared, and at the end of the 1950s, chocolate was added.

    How do Advent Calendars work?

    Every day, you open the right numbered “door” from your calendar, usually to find a piece of chocolate behind it. Parents can also prepare DIY advent calendars with little gifts for their kids.

    These calendars are pretty important in German culture.
    In Kindergarten or primary school, teachers can also make a DIY Advent Calendar for the whole class and every day someone else gets a little surprise from it.

    So what do you put in an Advent Calendar? They can have many different themes. For example, you can buy the traditional chocolate calendar which now exists from many famous brands (with more elaborate chocolate bars).

    Or you can make your own DIY Advent Calendar. You could get testing sizes of beauty products, craft something yourself, write coupons, or make a digital Advent Calendar with motivational quotes as I do!

    This could just be a nice chocolate calendar (with Celebrations, M&M’s, or other chocolate brands) or the beauty kit version. A clear example of advent calendars for adults is probably one with alcohol.

    Last year, I had a fun Beer Christmas Calendar that came with small bottles in different flavors. I’m a German gal, so it’s not surprising that I liked it, although ladies might prefer a wine calendar.

    I wouldn’t be surprised if you could buy Advent Calendars with shots – although this seems a bit hardcore for a Christmas calendar.

    If you love tea, maybe you’d like a DIY Advent Calendar with different types of tea.

    Or you could make a healthy calendar with daily smoothie recipes (provided you make sure that the necessary ingredients are available). This would be a nice touch to their daily routine.

    If you spent at least a few years in school (which I assume you did) you probably noticed that we don’t all learn the same way.
    Maybe you liked school. Or maybe you thought it was terrible.
    You may even have thought that your school’s teaching style just wasn’t doing it for you.

    Fortunately, we have easier access to great classes now thanks to the internet. And maybe you saw a webinar or an online class that was perfect for you. But what made it perfect?

    So, today we’ll take a look at the Conscious Competence Model and its 4 Stages of Learning. You’ll also discover a quick overview of the 4 Mind Styles Model, the VARK Framework, and Growth vs. Fixed Mindset.

    These are all different concepts you can use to help you prepare a great class or to simply figure out what kind of strategy works best for your personal development.

    The Conscious Competence Learning Theory

    The Conscious Competence Learning Model was first described by Management Trainer Martin Broadwell in 1969. Noel Burch then developed the Conscious Competence Ladder in the 1970s while working at Gordon Training.

    This learning model focuses on 2 factors that are important when we learn a new skill. Our awareness (consciousness) and our skill-level (competence).

    This is helpful if you are a sports coach, a life coach, or any kind of coach or teacher. Or maybe you need to train someone at work.

    But this model can also help you understand which of the four stages you are at in the learning process if you want to learn or improve a skill. People also have different learning styles and so it’s important to know what works best for you and for others.

    In psychology, the four stages of competence, or the “conscious competence” learning model, relates to the psychological states involved in the process of progressing from incompetence to competence in a skill.

    The Conscious Competence Learning Theory or Matrix explains how we learn something new, and what process or stages we go through. The four stages of learning are called

    • Unconscious Incompetence
    • Conscious Incompetence
    • Conscious Competence
    • Unconscious Competence

    So what are the 4 Stages of Learning?

    According to the Conscious Competence Model, the four learning stages can be organized in a Learning Matrix.

    Stage 1: Unconscious Incompetence

    At the unconscious incompetence stage, you don’t know that you don’t know! You don’t give a certain skill any active thought because you’re unaware that you may need it.

    That’s why you don’t see it as a relevant skill for now. You are unskilled but it’s not even on your radar.

    You don’t feel anything at this stage as you are blissfully unaware of any issues.

    Stage 2: Conscious Incompetence

    At the conscious incompetence stage, you know that you suck. Or to say it more politely: You know that you don’t know.

    And so, you’re painfully aware that there is a gap and that this skill is useful. That’s when you sign up for a class because you don’t want to be unskilled anymore.

    At this stage, you may feel self-conscious and lack confidence. You see that you still have a long way in front of you. Maybe you’ll even judge yourself.

    Stage 3: Conscious Competence

    Once you pass the 2 previous stages, you get to the conscious competence stage. Although you’ve learned the skill, it doesn’t come naturally yet. You have to concentrate to do it and you still practice or study, and repeat.

    To do the task well you need to make a conscious effort. But with much practice and hard work you can get to the next level.

    You start to feel more confident and more motivated. You realize how much you’ve learned and your progress is exciting.

    Stage 4: Unconscious Competence

    Unconscious competence is the final stage of the 4 stages of learning. Now, this high-level skill is so engrained that you no longer use a conscious process. It becomes second nature, like a habit.

    The learning process to get here can be long and tedious, but then it’s like you run on autopilot. Although you do it, you don’t necessarily know how you do it.

    If you already had certain skills or certain aptitudes to start with, this process will of course be much quicker. You can start at Stage 1 and still have great natural advantages already.

    At this stage, you feel completely confident. You’re lighthearted and you can truly enjoy your skills. And since you don’t have to focus to do them, you can listen to music or do something else at the same time.
    So it’s much more fun now.

    Conscious Competence Stage 4

    Bonus Stage 5: You’re able to coach or teach

    Although unconscious competence is the highest level of personal mastery of a skill, there is a fifth stage if you want to teach.

    At this stage, you not only master a skill but you can actually teach students at the other learning stages how to learn that skill.

    Side note: These stages are not set in stone and if you don’t practice your skills, you can fall back into previous stages or you may never reach the final stage.

    It all depends on the difficulty of the skill and how well you really know it. You may still be able to ride a bike after 20 years, but it may be harder to play an instrument or speak a language you haven’t used in a decade.

    Beyond the Conscious Competence Model

    The 4 stages of learning we saw above are not the only thing that impacts your learning curve.
    So, let’s take a look at other famous learning models and learning styles.

    This is helpful for everyone, even if you never want to be a coach or a teacher. These ideas can help you make better progress with your own personal development!

    Mind Styles Model

    Anthony Gregorc’s Mind Styles Model from 1984 is based on the idea that our way of thinking, learning, and processing information can be divided into 4 distinct styles.

    • Concrete-Random-Learner
    • Concrete-Sequential-Learner
    • Abstract-Sequential-Learner
    • Abstract-Random-Learner
    Abstract Concrete Learning Styles
    Mind Styles Learning Matrix

    Conrete-Random-Learners like to experiment, are hands-on risk-takers, and learn from the process. They can be highly competitive and prefer to work through problems on their own.
    They hate routine and repetition.

    Concrete-Sequential-Learner: In contrast to concrete-random learners, they don’t mind repetitious work. But open-ended questions, a lack of structure, and disorganized people are not appreciated.
    Concrete-sequential learners can be exceptional task-masters as long as they know exactly what is expected.

    Abstract-Sequential-Learners, like concrete-random learners, don’t care for tedious or repetitive work. Logic, facts, and expediency are crucial to them.
    They thrive in stimulating environments and value expert opinions. When it comes to communicating with others, they may not always be tactful.

    Abstract-Random-Learners are the most social people in this group. They truly enjoy teamwork and shy away from competition.
    They also don’t like dictatorial leaders and unfriendly people.

    Because they are so social, focusing on one thing at a time can be complicated for the playful abstract-random learner, and even constructive criticism can hurt their feelings.

    Growth mindset vs. fixed mindset

    Standford psychologist Carol Dweck, Ph.D. argues that there are 2 kinds of people. People with a fixed mindset and people with a growth mindset.

    For a “fixed mindset” person, their creative ability, character, and intelligence are static and can’t change in any meaningful way.

    People with this mindset prefer to look smart rather than to become smarter. Outside approval is very important and so they avoid failure at all costs (like learning something new).

    Learning styles: Fixed vs Growth Mindset

    A “growth mindset” person, on the other hand, thrives on challenges and believes in personal development. And so, improving themselves comes natural to them and they know very well that there are different stages of learning.

    And when they fail at something it doesn’t mean they are worthless. They see this as an opportunity for growth and for stretching their existing abilities.

    The VARK Model

    The most famous learning model is probably the VARK framework. This learning concept also puts people into 4 categories according to their preferred learning styles.

    They are called Visual, Auditory, Read/write, and Kinesthetic (touch). And even if most people learn a little bit through everything, one of these styles is usually dominant.

    Of course, I like great visuals and reading about things, but I’m above all an auditory learner. Listening is much more important than looking at someone (unless it’s a step by step tutorial).

    So what’s your favorite learning style? Again, the best material combines all the categories.

    Struggles with conscious competence

    Learning new skills can be hard. It can create self-doubt, frustration, fear of failure, and even overconfidence that can hurt you, too. Whatever your current emotional state, in the long run, it’s always helpful to develop your skills.

    The Dunning Kruger Effect

    The Dunning Kruger Effect usually affects people with a low skill-level who totally overestimate how good they are.

    In the field of psychology, the Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people of low ability have illusory superiority and mistakenly assess their cognitive ability as greater than it is.

    This happens when you don’t know that you don’t know. There’s a gap in knowledge and skills that someone is unaware of and so they think they rock.

    Take for example a software programmer who thinks he’s great at writing code. His code works and so he thinks he’s awesome at his job.

    But in reality, it took him way too long to write and the code is messy because our programmer doesn’t know that there are much better (or more modern) ways to do it.

    It’s like Stage 1 of our conscious competence model. This programmer is terrible but he is completely unaware of this!

    The Imposter Syndrome

    Kind of the opposite of the Dunning-Kruger Effect is the dreaded Imposter Syndrome. In this case, you obsess about your lack of knowledge and may underestimate how much experience and skills you have.

    Procrastination

    Procrastination can be sneaky, and surprisingly it has nothing to do with laziness.
    But if you’re not doing what you should be doing, it must mean you’re lazy, right? Why else would you procrastinate?
    This lack of motivation can even lead to self-esteem problems.

    The unexpected life lesson from annyoing mosquitoes

    As surprising as it may seem, you can get a life lesson from a super annoying mosquito. How is that possible? Well, if you think about it...

    Mosquitoes are the worst. So how can they possibly give you a life lesson?

    They can completely ruin a perfectly beautiful night. You’re outside enjoying the slightly cooler evening temperatures and just want to be happy.

    But all of a sudden you see a mosquito fly through your peripheral vision, so you panic and start flailing. Or you get no warning at all and just feel the sting of where it bit you.

    And if you’re very unlucky, you may get bitten 20 times in just a few minutes. Sure, you’re smart, so you use repellent lotion and repellent candles and repellent plug-ins, but those annoying blood-suckers will hunt you, especially at night.

    Life lesson from a mosquito

    They wait until you feel secure under your bedsheets. And when you’re mind is slowly drifting off to sleep, that’s when you hear the annoying high pitch buzzing of the dreaded mosquito.

    Now you have 2 options: You angrily flick on the lights, get your slipper and switch to beast mode, or you’re so tired that you strike a deal in your head. “Okay, you can bite me, but wait until I’m asleep (because this sound is awful), and don’t bite my face…”

    The fun-ruining powers of mosquitoes get even worse when you go to a different country. And no, that’s not the life lesson. And I don’t mean that mosquitoes can carry diseases.

    When I spent 3 weeks in Russia, those were the worst mosquito bites ever. They took about 10 days to “heal”, they swell to the size of grapes and they hurt and itch forever.

    The same (only a bit less violent) happened this summer in Slovenia and Croatia. Each mosquito bite took a week to disappear and they were really itchy all the time.

    Even with a week-old bite, it was hard to sleep. And everyone had about 15-30 bites and I’m not making this up!

    Even though we used every mosquito repelling technique available. It’s not like we had a light party inside with the windows open…

    So what is the life lesson?

    Now, that was a lot of mosquito talk for a post that’s not about mosquitoes. So why am I telling you this?

    The life lesson we got from the mosquitoes is that you sometimes can’t do anything about your situation. But you should not let this ruin your life.

    If you’ve tried everything and there’s nothing you can do to make your situation better, you need to let it go.
    Accept it and make the best of it.

    After a while, everyone just kind of accepted our mosquito fate and we didn’t let it ruin our vacation.

    Although it was impossible to forget about the bites because they were so darn itchy, no one complained. And I’m grateful because it would have ruined the vacation for real.

    Can you imagine listening to someone whining every day because the mosquitoes were so bad and the bites hurt & itched?

    Mosquito life lesson: Your mindset matters

    Happiness is a choice. And your mindset makes all the difference. A little positivity goes a long way.

    If you’re unhappy with something, don’t make excuses and look for ways to make it better. You should always try to get yourself out of the mess you’re in.

    But if there’s nothing you can do, or it takes time (because you first have to learn a new skill for example) then I highly recommend you accept that “it is what it is” in the meantime.

    I insisted on the mosquito story because that’s something everyone can relate to. And it’s important that these bites didn’t only last a day or two like when your “local” mosquitoes bite you at home.

    Of course, mosquitoes are not the worst and that was just a fun intro.
    There are plenty of worse problems you can have on your vacation or in real life. Unless the mosquito gives you Malaria or some other disease.

    But you see my point.

    Life lesson

    You’re the boss. Whatever is happening and however unfair it is.
    You get to decide what you do with it. .

    You choose if you let it ruin your day. And that can be hard to realize when you’re in the middle of a freaking mess. But it’s never too late to change course.

    So, maybe this little anecdote helps you see the truth in this life lesson. Don’t let the mosquito beat you.
    Make the best of your situation while you’re looking for a solution. Complaining and self-pity only make things worse!

    Perfectionists are Awesome – and Awful

    Being a perfectionist is awesome. And it's awful. There's a reason why people use it as a fake flaw in job interviews. So what can you do?

    That’s what it said, right there in my inbox. And my first thought was “Now, that’s just mean! Why would you say this?”

    But when you think about it, it’s actually kind of true. Sure, it depends on what tasks we’re talking about.
    But generally speaking, perfectionists spend a lot of time, effort, and potentially money to get everything just right.

    The perfectionist’s curse

    I also read that perfectionism is about feeling insecure and the fear of getting judged. The person who said this probably wasn’t a perfectionist.
    Or I “suffer” from a different type of perfectionism.

    Although the fear of judgment can be scary for some people, most of us just can’t help being a perfectionist.
    Imagine how freeing it would be if you weren’t so detail-oriented and you just didn’t see the errors and imperfections.

    It’s not like we obsess on purpose.
    Once you saw something that’s slightly off… you can’t unsee it.

    So what can you do?

    What can you do? Keep it flawed for the whole world to see, having people wonder if you can’t pay attention?

    I mean, a difference of 0.005% between two colors is massive, right?
    People could think your colorblind because this one shade of blue is not exactly like the other shade of blue.
    Well, guess what: They probably wouldn’t notice because 0.005% is ridiculous…

    And although this may sound like a fear of judgment, it’s more about personal integrity and wanting to do things “right”.

    I can’t even tell you how much time I’ve wasted moving stuff around pixel by pixel. Sometimes ending up moving it back to where it was 2 hours earlier.
    All the while being totally aware that I should just let it go. It’s already fine so just leave it alone.

    But there’s this little voice inside your head pushing you to make it better. And again, for me, it’s not about what others will think of me.
    It’s what I think. And I believe you should do your best at all times (and I’m working on bringing this down to “when it matters”).

    You know, in most cases, other people won’t even see the difference. Because they are not as obsessed as you are.

    They’re not thinking that your thing might be better if you spent 10 more hours to make it just the tiniest bit bluer.

    Someone who won’t rest until everything’s in order. And beautiful. And who delivers great results.

    There is a difference between obsessive perfectionism and taking time to create something that is the best you can offer. Knowing what needs to be better and stretching to improve yourself is what separates the mediocre from the marvellous.

    You see, my perfectionist friends, the harsh truth comes down to this: Perfectionists are slow and expensive. And that’s perfectly fine (haha) when pristine quality is needed.

    But maybe your internal presentation about X doesn’t have to be perfect.
    Maybe your first draft or layout can actually be bad and ugly.
    Possibly the memo about the coffee machine doesn’t have to be state-of-the-art drop-dead gorgeous.

    And maybe you could write your regular emails and just hit send instead of going over them 5 times to improve them…
    I’m definitely working on this. Do as I say not as I do, right?

    I’m totally aware when I get stuck in “tweaking mode” for things that don’t deserve this kind of attention.

    It’s such a waste of time. Not to be confused with procrastination, though.
    I won’t lie, letting go of unnecessary perfectionism is a struggle.
    But the first step is awareness. It starts with your ability to see which tasks you don’t need to obsess about.

    You’re probably not a perfectionist about everything in your life or you wouldn’t get anything done (I’m obviously not talking about compulsions here).

    Just plain old perfectionists who can work on themselves and allow their quality to be selectively a little worse – and make their lives better in the process.

    A perfectionist’s nightmare

    I listen to a podcast that hasn’t changed over the years. It has no intro music and the sound quality is just okay. The host basically just talks into her phone. And in almost every episode you can hear dogs bark, roosters crow, or cats meow.

    She also doesn’t try to make her voice engaging and if she goes off-track, it stays in the episode. It truly sounds like she sits down, starts talking into her phone, and then uploads the episode when she’s done talking.

    But you know what? I still listen to her. What she has to say is more important to me than how it is delivered.

    Could I ever do something with that kind of quality? I doubt it.
    It would make me feel awful because I know that it’s not the best I can do.
    And that’s the whole struggle. To know when great quality is necessary and when you’re wasting 10 hours for nothing.

    Too many people spend too much time trying to perfect something before they actually do it. Instead of waiting for perfection, run with what you got, and fix it along the way…
