Tips for Quality Content Writing

The post Tips for Quality Content Writing appeared first on InferaSolz.

Great content is an important component of every website, and it does not matter if it’s a professional/business website or for a hobby. Of course, quality content boosts SEO thereby generating traffic and leads to blogs and websites.

Besides, when the content is great and original, the website is likely to gain more exposure especially via Google ranking and other search engine rankings. Google has particularly made its stands clear that it rewards great websites with high quality content while at the same time, it penalizes sites that specialize in copying from other websites.

Therefore in a bid to build a great brand through the online platform, it is imperative to dedicate time and effort to produce quality content for your website. Have in mind that rushing or paying less attention to the quality of your content will take you nowhere as you are likely to end up wasting your time and resources.

Apparently, there are different approaches and styles of writing great content, but that’s not our topic for today. Our interest for today is rather on the tips of writing excellent quality content for a website or blog.

Now, let’s look at the tips in the subsequent paragraphs;

# 1

Determine Your Target Audience

One of the greatest tips for writing great website content is to determine your target audience. Your target audience can however, be determined by demographic factors such as age, sex, occupation, level of education, race, etc.

Once you define your target audience, you are likely to understand their needs which will make it possible for you to convey your message in a manner suitable for them.

User Surveys
Conduct User Surveys

A survey is only as good as the insights you gain from it. Here are a few tips to make yours as useful as doable:

  • Know what you want to learn from each question
  • Make questions short and easy to reply
  • Offer a prize for taking a survey.

We use a free product called Survey.io to conduct users surveys about our product on a regular basis.

Google Analytics
Use Google Analytics

Google Analytics has a ton of data about your audience if you know how to find it.

Google Analytics is offered also in two additional versions: the subscription-based Google Analytics 360, previously Google Analytics Premium, targeted at enterprise users,

Google Analytics for Mobile Apps, an SDK that allows gathering usage data from iOS & Android Apps.

Facebook Insight
Use Facebook Insights

Facebook provides every Page owner with a powerful analytics that is free for you to use anytime you want.

From here, you can quickly determine the demographics of your most active users and determine the topics that they share in common.

Twitter Analytics
Use Twitter Analytics

Twitter also provides an excellent dashboard that you can access if you sign up for a Twitter Ads account.

This dashboard does an excellent job of telling you what your followers are interested in—specifically listing common topics and other Twitter accounts that your followers have in common.

This is powerful information that goes way beyond basic demographic details.

When users subscribe to one of our email mailing lists, they are automatically added to an email queue that will ping them about 30 days after they sign up to see if they are enjoying our content.

Here’s how to set up such an email using several of top email marketing platforms:

# 2

Define the Content Goal

Defining the goals of your content is also another important tip in content writing. Therefore, the purpose of your content should be obvious. Is your content aimed at educating, informing, entertaining or at advertising certain products and services?

Of course, after identifying the goals of your content, it will be a lot easier for you to choose the right keywords and phrases that will help you achieve the set goals.

# 3

Do Keyword Research

Keyword research is extremely vital for strong content. Therefore, after identifying the target audience and defining the goals of the content, the next best tip is to do keyword research. Once you find the right keywords that are not only relevant to your topic but equally align to your content goals, you are likely to create top quality content with the potential for high Google ranking within the shortest possible time.

Keyword research is more of online returns on investment (ROI) as it allows you use the direct terms of both your clients and target audience.

Finally here’s the deal:

# 4

Be Creative and Original

Creativity, as well as originality, are other important elements of great content. Your content must be unique and original for your write-up to stand out and subsequently rank high on search engines such as Google. Therefore you should be creative enough to add interesting twists to topics which have largely been explored already. Otherwise, you can decide to explore topics from different perspectives in a bid to attract site visitors.

Always bear in mind that there are many plagiarism check tools that can be used to determine the authenticity or originality of your content. Besides, Google is always ready to penalize those ‘copy and paste’ websites just as it rewards websites filled with creative and original content.

# 5

Be Accurate Clear and Concise

There are so many websites out there that offer similar or same services. Therefore, to stand out among the many sites and blogs, you need to ensure that the information or content you relay to your audience is accurate, clear and concise. Providing your target audience with accurate information goes a long way to increase your credibility thereby making your visitors dedicated and loyal to your website.

Thus, you shouldn’t hesitate to use dictionaries or other credible sources of information once you are in doubt. Moreover, it is important to make references to the sources of your information especially when it’s about statistics and figures. Remember that your website is a reflection of your business and it will always impact how people view you.

Hence, ensure that your content is void of false information and other baseless content whose authenticity cannot be verified.

# 6

Use the SEO Technique

SEO stands for search engine optimization. Hence to create great content for your website, it is vital to use the approach or method that can be easily optimized by search engines thereby resulting in more website traffic. With that being said, while creating an SEO content strategy, it is imperative to understand SEO and content as well as the relations between them. Of course, when it comes to content marketing, we should be able to differentiate between content marketing and just writing an article that includes visual content with interactive videos and sometimes offline content.

Content marketing should rather be regarded as an incoming or inbound pull strategy which attracts online users. Thus, it is not supposed to be written in an interruptive manner since it is supposed to tie very closely into search engine optimization.

As a businessman, ensure that you create content that will act as a pull factor that enables potential buyers to either purchase or contact you. Nevertheless, while creating your content, you have to use intelligence to inform your decision and subsequently deliver outstanding results. Of course, you can’t just assume that your customers will like a particular content because you tried it and it worked last year.

However, you have to bear in mind that in this age of innovations and developments, industries are changing rapidly and so are the various platforms. For example, there are almost weekly changes in the way users use and interact with their mobile devices, web entities as well as search engines.

Nevertheless, one of the surest ways to plug directly into SEO campaigns is to gather search data. This implies that you have to find out exactly what people are searching for and plug some more information into the keywords. For instance, are they looking for particular things related to your product or are they looking for information?

After knowing what your potential customers are looking for and how they react to it, you should then develop content that focuses on addressing the issues they are looking for. Then you can proceed to optimize your content in such a manner that will rank and equally obtain visibility, not just from the search engine point of view but also from the user’s point of view.

# 7

Make Sure the Content is Engaging

One of the best ways to keep your readers glued to your page always is to provide content which is engaging and thought-provoking. One of the best tips for getting your target audience engaged in your content is by writing a great and attractive introduction to your write-up.

However, many people love stories, so you can also use an anecdote to pass across your message. Furthermore, you can equally leave your readers with questions that will provoke their thoughts thereby making them think or reflect on the best ways to implement the knowledge you provided.

Besides, sometimes you can bring interesting and controversial issues on subjects such as religion or politics in a bid to create fury and reactions amongst your website visitors.

# 8

Create Strong Headlines for Your Stories

Apparently, it takes more than good content or great design to make people read your article or story. One of the most important parts of writing an article is the headline.

Whenever you are writing content for your website, always ask yourself this question at every point ‘Would this make me want to read on?’ Therefore, if any part of your content, the headline inclusive isn’t catchy enough, do not publish what you have written yet. With that said, some of the tips to writing great headlines include the use of interesting adjectives like free, effortless, painstaking, fun etc.

You can also use unique rationale especially when you are making a list in which case words like reasons, principles, facts, lessons etc. can be used. Besides, you can equally use trigger words such as why, what, how, or when to make your headline more captivating.

Here’s few websites you can use for headlines:

# 9

Provide Continuous Updates

Another trick to having great content is by ensuring that information on your website is constantly being updated. Remember times do change and situations and circumstances change too.

Therefore you should always check your website to ensure that the information available on it is not yet obsolete. Of course, maintaining outdated information on your website will give the impression that you are either not credible or are out of business.

Besides, you should always come up with new and interesting posts or articles so that your site visitors will always find something new to read whenever they visit your page.

# 10

Use Top Quality Images and Videos

The use of quality images and videos on a website will also go a long way to increase the overall quality of content and subsequently the number of site visitors. The reason is that human beings have become too visual thereby making it possible for images to communicate better especially when they are lazy or too busy to read lengthy posts.

More so, videos have advantages as they can be downloaded and listened whenever and wherever it is convenient.

In a nutshell, writing great content requires much time and effort. The Reason is that it takes time to research and write top quality content. Of course, the title, grammar and even the organization of the entire text also need to be excellent for your content to stand out and rank high via Google and other search engines.

Therefore to be certain you have written a great content which is worth publishing, you should ensure that you have given your readers the best information possible. Besides, also ensure that the content is complete with no words or sentences that should be taken out.

10 eCommerce success trends to dominate in 2018

The $4 trillion estimated growth of the eCommerce industry in 2020 is a pointer to the fact that you have to gear-up and position your business to benefit from the impact of such growth and here are 10 eCommerce Success Trends In 2018 that will boost your business.

The e-commerce overall growth is startling, in 2017, the growth averaged at $2.3 trillion and is anticipated to rise to 4.5 trillion dollars in 2021 as stated by Statista report. As a result of this enormous growth, there has been a huge transformation and new strategies which continue to be improved daily for better output and customer satisfaction.

One goal you must focus on this year is providing a hyper-personalized customer experience. In a recent study, 88% of customers said they are more likely to shop with online shops that deliver personalized and connected cross-channel experience. This number is huge, thus, the need to make hyper-personalization of customers experience your 2018 focus.

As e-commerce continues to advance at a speedy pace, here are some wave-making trends that are pivotal to remain at the forefront of the competition.

#1

Artificial Intelligence – AI

Artificial Intelligence has invaded every aspect of human life and it is here to stay. The idea of having computers take over work is sad news for many, but for eCommerce, it is a welcomed development. According to Business Insider, 85% of customer interactions will be managed without any human interference by 2020.

This modern technology allows you to provide your customers with more personalized experience by processing and analysing (faster and more efficiently) large amount of customer data to identify patterns in purchase behaviour, credit checks and any other indicators that can help you present to the customer the exact product they need or may be thinking about buying from you. One of the most sort after and rewarding Artificial Intelligence technology that you must consider in 2018 to dominate is the chatbots.

Chatbots, according to tech emergency, chatbots is expected to be the number 1 consumer application of Artificial Intelligence in the next 5 years. The amazing thing is that the use of this modern technology is limited only by your imagination and creativity. This bot can be used for everything from helping a customer reset a password, to getting an updated account balance or finding a specific discount item on your site. #2

Virtual Reality – VR

Also called Immersive Multimedia or Computer-Stimulated Reality, this is a modern technology which is slowly but gradually creeping into the eCommerce industry, it mimics real-life shopping experience. It is predicted that growth in Virtual Reality will reach $4 billion in 2018.Virtual Reality

With the Virtual Reality technology, you get to engage your customers at an emotional level, something other traditional marketing strategies lack. The customer is able to interact with a product as they would in a brick-and-mortar store. With this technology, customers will no longer be stuck on the static product page on your website but can wander in a virtual mall to make their purchase. The retail giant Alibaba launched a Virtual Reality store Buy+ which allows customers with the aid of a cardboard Virtual Reality headset and their smartphones to wander around a virtual mall while making their purchases in real time.

69.23% is the figure for average shopping cart abandonment rate for eCommerce, but with more immersive experiences of an interactive content and capabilities like a 360-degree video, this figure will be reduced drastically. This technology is completely immersive and engages the customer at the sensory level; this keeps their focus on you and what you have placed in front of them. More so, Virtual Reality can help you put a product in front of a customer before it is actually created, the feedback you get from these offers you a huge competitive advantage and saves cost. Just imagine the turn-over you will accrue if you have this kind technology incorporated into your business in 2018.

#3

Augmented Reality -AR

Unlike Virtual Reality which creates an artificial environment, Augmented Reality integrates digital Augmented reality information with the customer’s environment by overlaying new information on top of it in real time.

Augmented Reality
Augmented Reality

Tactile contact has been identified as one of the factors that significantly increase sales but is impossible for eCommerce customers unless with Augmented Reality. A new study shows that 40% of customers will pay more for products, as long as they can have the touch-and-feel experience which Augmented Reality makes possible for eCommerce customers through impressive-quality 3D holograms.

The Augmented Reality technology also provides customers with the opportunity to modify and express their preferences as they shop. Preferences like color, size, and style are very important to customers and 77% of customers (as shown in a recent research) would prefer to use Augmented Reality to observe these diversities before they pay for a product. When customers are able to convert their imaginations to reality at your e-shop, they keep coming back to you.

#4

Smart Search

Are customers able to find exactly what they want on your site? Relevance and accuracy of a search are one of the factors that build lasting impression on potential customers, with a high tendency of converting them to paying customers. Using ‘auto-strategic’ is a very strategic tool which allows your customers to articulate the particular product they want as they let you lead them to the desired landing page.

You should definitely maximize the benefits of Natural language processing in making searches smart on your site. Natural language processing is the technology that can help improve customer’s searches, bringing customized messages and solutions to customers at the right time and right platform.

#5

Tailored Shopping Experience

One of the important customer information you need at your fingertips is the knowledge that customers shop for different reasons, as such a broadly defined experience will not work anymore (even if it used to). The deal right now is to give each customer a personalized service.

Using data analytics to understand the customer’s journey will help you achieve this goal. Insights given by the analytics of the customer’s journey (such as how the customer found you, what they are interested in, what affects their purchase decisions etc), will help you give a more personalized experience. With a customer’s purchase history, for example, you can suggest similar products.

#6

Mobile-based Traffic

Traffics to websites have been growing over the years and there is a predicted exponential growth of about 8-times the current rate by the year 2020. It is therefore important that you position your business to reap from the increase in conversions that this foreseen growth will produce when you increase traffic to your site. There are various means to achieve this, one of which is maximizing the numerous social media platforms available.

#7

Video Content

Studies have shown that videos increase sales by 70% because it gives customers a better understanding of the product they are paying for and it enhances their engagement. Getting the hang of how to use a product by watching a video for a few minutes is way more interesting for any customer than going through a heap of text. So increase customer engagement this year by including more product videos on your site.

#8

User-behaviour Analytics

A good understanding of your customer’s behavior is the key to bringing the increase in sales and conversions you desire in 2018. This is not Google analytics, but a more complex approach to processing and analyzing customer’s data. With this method, a more accurate portrait of a customer’s need can be gotten. Armed with an accurate customer image, you can tailor emails and offers to their particular needs and history. This level of personalization will greatly increase conversion rates for you.

#9

Delivery on the Same Day

90% of customers wish to get their orders on the same day and this is almost impossible for most e-shops. This is a big opportunity for you to beat the competition. Considering the number of customers that will stick with you and the number of prospective customers that will get attracted to you if you deliver on the same day, then you should totally explore this trend.

#10

Single eCommerce Network

This particularly has to do with online shopping with a convenient pick-up at a brick-and-mortar store. This is a flexible system that allows e-shops to cooperate and collaborate with a single network to ease pick-up of products ordered by their customers. This reduces the length of time for delivery and will surely save you cost.

At the heart of your eCommerce success in 2018 is the need to put your customer first, especially their need for a more personalized experience while shopping with you. Whatever choices you make this year, ensure it draws you closer to this goal. Very importantly, explore available technologies as much as you can to give your customers the best e-shopping experience. Remember to keep abreast with latest trends and development dominating the e-commerce industry.

How To Become An Online Entity

A Quick Essential Tips On How To Become An Online Entity

[ Local Business – Organization – Personal ]: Using JSON-LD & Knowledge Graph

Ever heard of JSON-LD & Knowledge Graph? If not, then you surely are missing out a lot. In fact, these two have become vital items for digital marketers in today’s world.

Nevertheless, there is no need for you to be worried much as we would be providing you a few quick essential tips on how you can become an online entity using these two methods.

ON DECEMBER 16, 2015 GOOGLE RELEASED their Knowledge Graph Search API which allows you to query their Knowledge Graph for entities. The announcement was made via the Freebase.

how I was able to make myself an entity using api or widget

Here is Google Developers video that explains how the Knowledge Graph works.

Google Knowledge Graph API

Google inc Google knowledge graph

# 1

Make the knowledge graph know the things that can be found on your site

Before the actual query process is done, indexing and the analysis of the content is done first. This process is essential to boost the answer presentation including pre-extracting as well as disambiguating entities. There is a need for you to know that Google has created the knowledge graph in order to give an identity to an entity.

Through the creation of these identities, search engines can then understand the intent of the user for the ambiguous search query that they have performed. So, instead of matching the query to the keywords used, the search engine would then try to understand what you mean with your query.

This is the reason why you need to make the knowledge graph know the things that can be found on your site.

# 2

Connect and define your site’s identities

The specific content pages on your site including your products, events and executive profile pages should be marked up. That way, Google would have an easier time determining where to find the content that is being searched for all the other content on your site.

Then, after marking up your content, you can start defining your entity so that Google would have an idea on its relation with the other entities. There are so many ways for you do this, one is to use open data sources that are specific to your city, country or industry.

# 3

Consistency is the key

In all of your data sources, everything should be consistent, especially when it comes to the phone number, name and even the address that you are using. Consistency in your URL is also very important.

For example, if you have used only www. on one of your data sources, then it is not suggested for you to add http:// before it.

# 4

Implement an organization schema markup

On your website, don’t forget to implement an organization schema markup. On the other hand, if you are doing this for an individual, then you can use the person markup. Make sure to specify your social profiles and your logo.

There is a need for you to know that you can actually specify the specific image that Google should use as the logo of your organization on the knowledge graph.

On the other hand, when you markup your profile links, the algorithm of Google processes your specified profile and then displays the profile that is most relevant to the query made by the user.

Also, make sure that what you have marked up is visible to the user. This can help you achieve better recognition and broader reach in search results.

# 5

Troubleshoot your markup

You can troubleshoot your markup by using a structured data testing tool. This ensures that the properties specify suitable values like the correct logo, contact information, and name. You can also make suggested changes to the knowledge graph card.

For example, once Google as crawled on your marked-up page and you have seen information that is incorrect, you should report it immediately. This can be done by simply clicking on the “Feedback” link that can be found at the bottom of the card.

Now, in case you are a recognized entity or authority, then you would be provided with more options for editing. You also need to tell Google in case there is something on your page that needs to be updated and whether or not it has something to do with the entity.

Ideas about Featured Snippet to enhance the website traffic

Here are a few tips for taking advantage of this feature and learn how to get featured snippets for your site-

# 1

Optimize your website for Featured Snippet (Google Answer box)

Google’s SERP has gone through an evolution in recent times, with the addition of a rich featured snippet known as Google’s Answer Box.

The featured snippet (Google Answer Box) generally appears at the top of the SERPs and is a much-coveted spot for marketers these days.

By optimizing the Google answer box, marketers can ensure to enhance their website traffic in an organic manner.

# 2

Do not underestimate the power of good old keyword research

There have been multiple studies confirming that the majority of featured snippets are triggered by long-tail keywords. The more is the number of words that are typed into a search box, the higher the probability of a featured snippet.

Hence, it’s always a good idea to start with researching your keywords to maximize the website traffic.

Another important point to keep in mind when performing keyword research with featured snippets is always to start with question-type search queries such as “what,” “why,” “how etc. as these are the easiest to identify.

# 3

Packing many similar questions in single article

The very concept of featured snippets is based on the premise that once a page gets featured, it’s likely to get featured in lots of similar queries as well. This means that it should be structured and worded in a way that it addresses a lot of related questions.

Since Google is very good at determining synonymic and closely related questions, marketers should do the same to enhance website traffic.

# 4

Identify and target the search queries where you already rank high

One of the obvious ways to take advantage of the featured snippet is by identifying the phrases your business is already rank highly for. These will be the easiest to get featured for after you optimize for Google answer boxes.

# 5

Organization of questions is important

In order to combine many closely related questions in one page, it is essential to organize the queries properly which allows the marketers to structure the content well.

Some useful tips in this aspect could be-

  • A generic selection of keyword for a section or a category of the blog
  • Specific search query as the title of the article and also to determine the subheadings of the article

# 6

Keep updating and re-uploading the images

It is known facts that paragraph featured snippets with images are very eye-catching.Since the Word press adds dates to image URLs, even after updating the content with newer information the images can be considered old, making it essential to keep updating the images to generate organic traffic through Google snippets.

You will be amazed to see the difference in the website traffic with paragraph featured snippets along with images once you start updating the fresh images.

# 2

Enable a browser cache

Enable Browser cache

Enable your browser cache so that you can avoid unnecessary server requests when loading a page. To improve your webpage load speed, you should consider setting expire headers. They are crucial in that they help determine whether a webpage is requested from the source or browser’s cache.

It stores webpage content e.g. images, making it faster to load the page when a user revisits the page.Leveraging your browser cache is important for assets that are constantly changing, and for the webpage’s load speed.

How to leverage browser caching?

  1. Change the request headers of your resources to use caching.
  2. Optimize your caching strategy.

# Step 1 The way to enable caching is to add some code to a file called .htaccess on your web host/server. Cpanel>> File Manager>> .htaccess

# Step 2 The code below tells browsers what to cache and how long to “remember” it. It should be added to the top of your .htaccess file.

## EXPIRES CACHING CODE ##

## EXPIRES CACHING ##

ExpiresActive On
ExpiresByType image/jpg “access 1 year”
ExpiresByType image/jpeg “access 1 year”
ExpiresByType image/gif “access 1 year”
ExpiresByType image/png “access 1 year”
ExpiresByType text/css “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType text/html “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType application/pdf “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType text/x-javascript “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType application/x-shockwave-flash “access 1 month”
ExpiresByType image/x-icon “access 1 year”
ExpiresDefault “access 1 month”

## EXPIRES CACHING ##

# Step 3 Save the .htaccess file and then refresh your webpage.

Choose the right Web-Host

Web hosting Company

Webhosting plays a huge role in the time it takes for your website to load. This is often measured by the speed (in milliseconds) it takes for a webpage to load.

It’s a familiar difficulty: Which hosting provider should you trust with your sites? So many hosting companies, so many price range.

This is crazy:

According to Adam Berry of digital director at Wingard Creative Great hosting boils down to the 3 S’s: speed, support, and security.

You need the ability to rapidly scale your website as your target audience grows and the resiliency to handle sudden bursts of high traffic said Nasdaq’s Simon Ball.

Now:

If you choose the right hosting, with high speed, good scalability, security and great support, you can live a tension free life when it comes to your website.

So, here are 5 kicker points which will help you to choose the right one.

Decide what type web project you’re building or already had.
1. Blogger / Blog Site: you can choose Wp-engine

According to survey most of the people use WordPress as CMS Website Development. So you can choose any shared Linux server.

2. Company Website: Preferable Shared Server for a small-medium company

for small & medium companies you can choose a shared server. If your website is developed in PHP then choose Linux server, and if your website is developed in ASP.NET use Windows server.

3. E-commerce Website: Preferable Dedicated or Shared Server

According to research nowadays people prefer online shopping. So you f have a small e-store with fewer categories then you must prefer shared server. Also please check whether the hosting company supports your application platform (like Magento, woocommerce).
Need Add-on: CDN, SSL, Cron (optional)

4. Custom Web Application for Company: Preferable Dedicated Server

Need Add-ons: CDN, SSL, Cron (optional)

Estimate amount of traffic you expected

Generally, hosting companies charge based on storage & bandwidth usage. If few audiences visit your website, then bandwidth is low. But if suddenly your website goes viral then your website needs high bandwidth.

So, choose a hosting company, who will give you the ability to rapidly scale your Plan.

Know which type hosting you need
  • Shared Server
  • VPS Server
  • Dedicated Server
Understand which & how many resources required
  • Storage & Ram
  • Bandwidth
  • How many Domain & Email
  • Security & Support
Know how price works & compare signup vs. renewal cost

We know, the price usually plays a major role when you are shopping for a new web host. While your costs definitely factor into your decision, don’t sacrifice support and performance.

# 4

Minimize HTTP requests

Minimize HTTP Requests

HTTP is a request-response feature that allows you to fetch a web page or data from its main server. When browsing on your phone, it requests the web page from the host and depending on the number of requests used; it determines the loading speed.

So, if you are using a number of HTTP requests, then it will take time to process the web page compared to when you are using lesser HTTP requests.

# 5

Reduce Server Response Time

Reduce Server Response Time

If your server takes time to respond to user requests on a web page, it will be reflected on the web page load speed. The more time your server takes time to respond, the more time a web page will take before loading.

To increase your web page performance, aim for a server response time of 200ms or less.

# 6

Enable Gzip compression

Gzip Compression

Gzip compression helps compress web pages, JavaScript and CSS before being availed to the user on the browser.

This takes place at the server level, which is to respond to requests on the webpage from a user. With a Gzip compression, you will increase load speed and reduce the bandwidth used at the same time.

Checking Tools:

Here’s the solution

For WordPress: Gzip Compression Widget
For PHP: Try ob_gzhandler

# 7

Optimize Images

Image Optimization

Optimizing images should be accompanied by trimming down the size of the images. Images that have a large size and have a high resolution are heavy and it’ll take time for them to load.

Needless say, they consume more bandwidth and at the same time, reduce webpage load time. It is ideal to optimize your images to at least 100Kb or lower.

Surveys performed by Akamai and Gomez reported statistics including:

  • Half of web users expect a website to load within two seconds.
  • A 1-second delay in page load time can decrease visitor satisfaction by 16% and can also lead to a drop in the conversion of 7% or more.
  • Load time is a major contributing factor to page abandonment, and the abandonment increases as a percentage with every second of load time, with nearly 40% of users abandoning a page after 3 seconds.
  • 73% of mobile internet users report that they’ve experienced problems with page load times on their devices.

Here’s is the solutions:

WordPress Free Widget: wp smush it & tiny compress images

Code for image compression in PHP

$source_url is the image, $destination_url is where to save and $quality is a number between 1 and 100 choosing how much jpeg compression to use.

function compressImage($source_url, $destination_url, $quality) {
$info = getimagesize($source_url);

if ($info[‘mime’] == ‘image/jpeg’) $image = imagecreatefromjpeg($source_url);
elseif ($info[‘mime’] == ‘image/gif’) $image = imagecreatefromgif($source_url);
elseif ($info[‘mime’] == ‘image/png’) $image = imagecreatefrompng($source_url);

//save file
imagejpeg($image, $destination_url, $quality);

//return destination file
return $destination_url;
}

You can find more about page speed and it’s compression suggestions on the page speed docs from Google and Cloudinary which describe some of the techniques/tools to compress appropriately.

# 8

Optimize CSS Delivery

Optimizing CSS

CSS is a lightweight framework that speeds up the processing time of a webpage. For CSS delivery, the webpage accesses data via external file and inline.

External file loads before the page is processed while inline work with the HTML. It is therefore that you optimize the CSS delivery so that you can reduce the size of your codes, and increase your webpage loading speed.

Here are 4 Actionable Ideas to CSS Optimization

Try to create one external CSS. Combine your all CSS in a one file.

External CSS files are the main way that CSS is being used in webpages, and very likely the way your CSS is being used. In the head section of your HTML, there is something that often looks like this

<link rel=”stylesheet” type=”text/css” href=”http://yoursite.com/main.css” media=”screen” title=”style (screen)” />

If you have more than one CSS file they should be combined into one file. When you have several external CSS files the browser has to download each one before it can display your page.

This causes many round-trips to get each CSS file which results in your webpage being slow to load. This can be easily changed by combining all the CSS files into one file.

Use inline styles; add the style attribute to the relevant element.

An inline CSS is used to apply a unique style to a single HTML element & style attribute of an HTML element.

<style> …. </style>
<h1 style=”color:blue;margin-left:30px;”>This is a heading</h1>

Tip: I would encourage you to avoid using this method because inline style loses many of the advantages of a stylesheet (by mixing content with presentation).

Do Not Use @import calls for CSS

@import has a negative impact on web page performance. If you’re using !important, your CSS is structured in a way that’s not respecting the cascade properly.

@import URL(“style.css”)

Tips: Use LINK instead of @import if you want stylesheets to download in parallel resulting in a faster page.

<link rel=’stylesheet’ href=’a.css’> instead of <style>@import url(‘a.css’);</style>

No CSS in HTML things like your divs or your h1s (in element CSS)

Google PageSpeed guideline Optimize CSS Delivery, says that this will cause the browser to respond slower and that it is not going to be wise to have any such styles in our code because to do so is against the Content Security Policy of W3.

So you should remove all the CSS you use in the HTML body (example: <p style=”margin-left:10px;”></p>) and place these CSS codes inside the HTML head tag.

Reduce the number of plugins you use on the web page

Reduce the number of plugins you use

With over 50,000 plugins in the WordPress repository, If you have a couple of plugins, they may reduce your webpage load speed.

Since 40% of visitors leave a site if it takes more than three seconds to load, you should consider cutting them down, and if there are any that are not in use remove them.

The reality is, if you want to build a fully functional website with all features, you’re going to need to install some WordPress plugins.

But here’s the kicker:

Fortunately, there are many ways to prevent the issues

1. Reduce the number of plugins you use: Use fewer plugins for increasing website performance that helps to load faster.

2. Install multifunctional plugins: Try to reduce the number of plugins you use by installing plugins that include more than one feature that you need.

3. Decide what you really need and delete the rest: Review the plugins you have installed and the ones you have deactivated. If you haven’t used them in a long time or you don’t plan on using them at all, then delete them.

4. Test plugins before you install them: Test plugins on a staging site or a local environment thoroughly before installing them on a live site. This gives you a chance to catch problems before it reaches your live site.

5. Clean up your database: Plugins often take up a lot of space in your database so eliminating any unnecessary ones is a great preliminary step toward database. Check out 10 Tips for Keeping a Squeaky Clean WordPress (and Multisite!) Database for details.

6. Install a security plugin: Using a security plugin can help catch and isolate issues before they break your site. That way, you can fix the problem or delete the plugin so it doesn’t do any (further) damage.

You can try:

Wordfence Security

7. Use plugins that are regularly updated and maintained: This decreases the chances of coming across problemed plugins that aren’t going to see bug fixes and performance improvements.

8. Perform regular plugin performance scans: Some of the plugins you use are usually large thus affecting how long it takes for a webpage to load.
By using

P3 (Plugin Performance Profiler)

You can measure the performance of your plugins real time.

Now:

Remove unessential plugins and find a quicker alternative over at WordPress.org

According to Our WP Development Team

  • 0-5 plugins For Shared or budget Cloud Hosting
  • 5-20 plugins, For Cloud hosting, VPS or dedicated servers but 10 or less is usually ideal

# 10

Minimize Redirects

Redirect

Adding more redirects to a webpage adds extra HTTP request, which takes time to process on the browser. Nevertheless, redirects take more time to load, so, you should consider bringing your webpage directly to the users.

If you have any unnecessary redirects, consider cutting them down and remain with those that are relevant.

# 11

Minify your codes (CSS & JavaScript)

Minify your CSS - JS

Minifying your codes simply means you remove all unnecessary characters from the source code. However, you should not interfere with the functionality of the code.

Defer any unnecessary codes so that you can optimize the time your website takes to respond. For mobile browsers, you should parse your codes on your browser so as to increase the website’s loading speed.

Minification of codes also helps improve mobile caching and reduce bandwidth consumption.

# 12

Fix 404 errors (avoid bad requests)

Fixing 404

404 errors or bad requests are web page killers. If there are any missing files or broken links, it will prompt a 404 error.

Solving the errors will ensure that web pages actually load and they take less time at the loading stage. So, occasionally run your web page to ensure that there are no bad requests or 404 errors.

In addition to that, you will be saving your server’s resources because you are not wasting any useful resources.

# 13

Serve resources from a consistent URL

Consistent URL

For webpage resources that are shared across multiple pages, you should ensure that it originates from a common URL.This makes it easier to load webpages that are linked together since they are served from the same hostname.

Instead of using a parent hostname for shared website resources, consider using a single hostname.

# 14

Let in CSS at the top and JS at the bottom

CSS before JS

When you include CSS and JS or any other stylesheet on your webpage, it compromises the browser’s rendering process. When creating a webpage, you should arrange the CSS before the JS to reduce loading time.

Nevertheless, it helps you come up with a standard webpage which is optimal in improving the load speed of a webpage.

# 15

Enable Expires Headers

Add Expire Header

The whole idea behind Expires Headers is not only to reduce a load of downloads from the server (constantly downloading the same file when it’s unmodified is wasting precious load time) but rather to reduce the number of HTTP requests for the server.

When you specify the character set in the headers, it helps speed up how fast your browser responds. Therefore, if you are confident about your character set, you can use it instead of PHP functions.

As a matter of fact, using characters set for your headers minimizes size, thus boosting your webpage load speed.

Expires headers let the browser know whether to serve a cached version of the page.

  • Reduce server load
  • Increase page speed
  • Cost-benefit ratio: high value
  • Access needed

The idea is to set late expiry times for items that don’t change on your website (logo, colors etc). Set short expiry times for things that change regularly.

Now: add expire header

First, you need to decide on what files you update often and what file types don’t get updated often. A common list of file types we see a lot are:

  • images: jpg, gif, png
  • favicon/ICO
  • javascript
  • CSS

Then, We define our Expires Headers in the .htaccess file. This is a hidden file often found in the root of your website (via FTP).

Now, open up your .htaccess file and paste the following:

# Expires headers (for better cache control) #

# ———————————————————————-
# Expires headers (for better cache control)
# ———————————————————————-

# These are pretty far-future expires headers.
# They assume you control versioning with filename-based cache busting
# Additionally, consider that outdated proxy may miss cache
# If you don’t use filenames to version, lower the CSS and JS to something like
# “access plus 1 week”.

ExpiresActive on

# Your document HTML
ExpiresByType text/html “access plus 0 seconds”

# Media: images, video, audio
ExpiresByType audio/ogg “access plus 1 month”
ExpiresByType image/gif “access plus 1 month”
ExpiresByType image/jpeg “access plus 1 month”
ExpiresByType image/png “access plus 1 month”
ExpiresByType video/mp4 “access plus 1 month”
ExpiresByType video/ogg “access plus 1 month”
ExpiresByType video/webm “access plus 1 month”

# CSS and JavaScript
ExpiresByType application/javascript “access plus 1 year”
ExpiresByType text/css “access plus 1 year”

The most important bit is that you need to rename your CSS and JavaScript files whenever they change because your visitor’s browsers will not check them again for a year, once they are cached.

But what’s the catch?

Implementing expire header and set expire too far into future and you made an update to the site, your visitor can’t see updated one until the header expires in their browser.

I highly recommend not using the Expires Default header that sets a default time span for all resources. In most cases, you will not want to set a general expiry date for everything.
