The shocking injury came after Bonilla crashed into what he claims was an unmarked barrier on the side of a motorway in California last year.

Now Bonilla, who has also fought under the Glory kickboxing banner, is suing the California Department of Transportation, which he claims is responsible for his devastating injuries.

Bonilla is reported to have been driving on 10 Freeway in West Covina, about 20 miles east of Downtown Los Angeles, when he needed to pull over.

As he did so he hit a barrier that he says was not properly marked.

The crash destroyed the front of his car and in the process almost severed his left leg and broke his collarbone.

Doctors were able to reattach his leg but there are fears Bonilla will struggle to make a full recovery and could be forced to have the leg amputated later.

The fighter is now suing road chiefs after claiming they failed to give drivers necessary protections against accidents caused by barriers.

Bonilla, who stands 5 foot 10 inches tall and weighs around 10 stone 7 pounds, is said to be doing well after surgery but US website TMZ Sports reports his leg is still in “bad shape”.

And in January this year the major-champ-in-waiting discovered his grandmother had passed away the night before the final round of a tournament he was leading.

Woodland, 35, from Topeka in Kansas, US, called 2017 the “toughest year” of his life after he and wife Gabby – who is now expecting twins in August – tried to come to terms with the loss of one of their babies during an earlier pregnancy.

It was in March that Woodland – who won by three strokes from two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka at Pebble Beach – unexpectedly pulled out of the WGC-Matchplay ahead of his match against Rory McIlroy.

Earlier that month he had posted images of the babies’ scans on Instagram and wrote: “First time I’ve been excited about a double #twins.”

A week passed before Woodland told the world what had happened, 28 days after the photo of the scans.

In a statement charged with emotion, Woodland said: “Last week I withdrew from the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play to be with my wife, Gabby, as there were complications with our recently announced pregnancy with twins.

“Gabby and I have since had to cope with the heartbreaking loss of one of the babies, and our doctors will be closely monitoring the health of my wife and other baby for the remainder of the pregnancy.

“We appreciate all of the love and support during this difficult time as we regroup as a family.”

The heartbreaking loss came at a time when Woodland was playing some of the best golf of his career with two runner-up finishes and four top-10s up to that point of the year.

Fortunately, the couple welcomed son Jaxson in June, eight months after they tied the knot in a beach ceremony in Amanyara, a beautiful Caribbean island.

But that was not without another gut-wrenching moment.

Tiny Jax was born 10 weeks early and weighed just 3lbs.

Woodland posted a photo of himself holding his newborn with the message: “G and I are so excited to welcome Jaxson Lynn Woodland into the world.

“He came to us 10 weeks earlier kicking and screaming at 3lbs. G and Jax are both doing great.”

And the doting dad has flooded his social media page with photos of him proudly holding his son since.

But it was not until 40 days after the birth that Jax could go home with his parents.

Woodland wrote: “Delayed interval delivery is rare and even rarer that Jaxson was able to stay in utero for 13 weeks longer.

I think little man enjoyed his first birthday cake

A post shared by Gary Woodland (@gary.woodland) on

“After 40 days in the NICU, Jaxson is home. We couldn’t be more thankful for the St Lukes team who has helped our little guy grow.”

Fast forward to this year’s Masters and Woodland had his son come along for a walk in the par-3 contest.

After experiencing that unimaginable low, Woodland’s game and personal life rebounded before more tragedy struck in January.

His grandmother died at her home in Kansas the night before Woodland was trying to win the first tournament of the year in Hawaii.

Woodland told reporters: “I got that phone call late last night. That's been tough.

5

“She's been downhill for a little while now. It's been tough. You try to prepare for that but you never really can. So definitely have a little extra emotion with me, but we'll get through it.”

Woodland did not win the event but anything on the course pales into comparison to the rollercoaster ride his personal life has taken.

Such perspective can only help him tonight in his quest to win his first major and establish himself as one of the game's best.

Sacked rugby star Israel Folau claims allowing transgender children is ‘giving in to the devil’ in latest outburst

Folau claimed the devil was seeping through the government, which will in turn "slowly" affect the world and the rest of society.

He said: "You see in today's youths and everything, they are allowing young kids in primary school to be able to have the permission to change their gender if they want to by taking away the permission of their parents.

"Now they are trying to take control as a government to make those decisions for young kids who are basically 16 years old or younger, they don't even know what they are doing.

'GOD HAS CALLED US'

"This is what the devil is trying to do, to instil into the government, into this world, into society, and it is slowly happening."

Folau went on to urge Christians to be bold and profess their faith in the workplace even if they will be "cast out".

He added: "Are we too scared because we might be cast out by our workplace or cast out of somewhere because we're not liked or loved by those around us and don't believe the same thing we do?

"You might be the only born-again Christian in that workplace, you might feel a bit awkward with your co-workers because they are in the world and you're not.

"We should feel blessed … because God has called us."

Folau was sacked from Rugby Australia after he said "hell awaits" for "drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists, idolaters".

The post's caption reads: "Those that are living in Sin will end up in Hell unless you repent.

"Jesus Christ loves you and is giving you time to turn away from your sin and come to him."

Rugby Australia said Folau had committed a "high-level breach of the Professional Players' Code of Conduct".

The controversial post amassed over 41k likes and 38k comments divided on whether he was right to share his views.

After his contract was ripped up, he refused to apologise.

He said:"It's obviously a decision that's in the process right now but I believe in a God that's in control of all things.

"Whatever his will is, whether that's to continue playing or not, I'm more than happy to do what he wants me to do.

"First and foremost, I live for God now.

"His plans for me are better than whatever I can think."

CHRIS FROOME has vowed to get back to his best after speaking for the first time since the horror smash that nearly wrecked his career.

In the picture he has dressings on his elbow and his midriff is covered.

He said: "Whilst this is a setback and a major one at that, I am focusing on looking forward.

"There is a long road to recovery ahead, but that recovery starts now and I am fully focused on returning back to my best."

Twitter followers immediately sent him messages of support after the smash at 37mph that saw him lose control of his time trial bike and hit a house wall in France.

Froome had surgery on his thigh bone, elbow and ribs and it later emerged he also suffered a small fracture in his spine after the crash which also saw him lose four pints of blood. .

He faces at least six months off the bike and will not challenge for the Tour de France title he has won four times, meaning defending champ Geraint Thomas will lead Ineos starting on July 6.

Froome added: "I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone who has sent their best wishes to me since the crash.

ROAD TO RECOVERY

"This is obviously a tough time but I have taken a lot of strength from the support over the last three days.

"The outpouring of support has been really humbling and something I would never have expected."

Thomas starts his Tour warm-up today when he rides the Tour de Suisse and boss Sir Dave Brailsford will desperately hope the Welshman avoids a crash.

Well wishers from all over the cycling world have sent Froome messages of encouragement, including his team-mates and former fellow Team Sky rider Bradley Wiggins.

Wiggo tweeted: "Wishing you a full & speedy recovery Chris x."

Froome also learned he will be in for another grand tour title after Spaniard Juan Jose Cobo had abnormalities in his biological passport from 2011.

Cobo has a month to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
