A lot of people believe that highly specced laptops are good for music production. Well, they are right. High-performance hardware is must to run the DAW and djing software efficiently but not all high-end laptops have what it takes to be a good music production laptop. So, what exactly constitutes to an ideal laptop for music recording and DJing? And, considering the fact that most professional music producers use MacBook for their work, should you consider spending your money on a costly MacBook or can a windows machine suffice your needs?

To answer all your questions, here is a complete guide on laptops for music production which will help you to make an informed purchase of your next laptop for making music.

First things first, buying a laptop for music production is not an easy task. You have to be very picky with the hardware as DAW software are resource-demanding, and you also have to take care of various other things such as the fans noise, available number of ports, and more. However, we will be talking about all these important aspects of a music production laptop later in this guide but before that let’s come to a conclusion:

Should you buy a MacBook or Windows Laptop for Music Production?

Well, which laptop to buy for music production will mostly depend upon the DAW software you use and of course on the amount you’re willing to spend on a new laptop.

If you can shed a couple of thousand bucks on your new laptop then definitely top of the line MacBook Pro with touch bar is the best choice for music production right now as it offers a very stable performance, and it is also fairly easy to travel with, which is very important if you’re into DJing.

But, if you’re on a budget, then Windows laptops are also an excellent choice for making music. In fact, for the price of an entry-level MacBook Pro, you can buy a pretty beefy specced Windows laptop which can run even the most demanding DAW and djing softwares smoothly.

However, refinement and robustness of Windows are not as good as macOS. macOS is perfectly optimized to synchronize and work with the hardware on MacBooks, and that’s the reason why even older MacBook Pros still excels in performance than most of the new Windows laptops. But, there are few excellent Windows laptops which give MacBook Pro a good run for the money (you’ll find them in the list of our most recommended laptops for music production below).

Apart from this, the DAW software you use is also a very important thing to consider before you choose the operating system of your laptop. Make sure to check the DAW software you want to use for making music supports the operating system you choose for your laptop. I am telling this because many people don’t research properly and end up buying Windows laptop for Logic Pro X which is only available for macOS.

Heart of the matter is, research properly about the DAW software and other tools you want to use before deciding the operating system of your laptop for music production.

So, these are some of the important points to decide whether you should buy a MacBook or Windows laptop for your music production work. However, if you want to have an in-depth look at both the operating systems then you can check out this article by Tech Radar which covers pretty much everything from UI to everyday performance of both macOS Mojave and Windows 10.

Now, if you plan to go with the macOS, then you can buy the MacBook Pro model that suits your budget and requirements. But, if you choose Windows, then there are tons of different Windows laptops available in the market and to find the best laptop that suits all your recording and music production requirements is no less than a herculean task.

So, to help you out, our team of laptop experts tested a lot of different laptop models by running DAW and DJing softwares on them and cherry-picked some of the best ones that performed well in our tests of music recording, mixing and djing.

But, before we check out those shortlisted laptops for music production, let’s discuss all the essential things that one needs to check on a laptop to make it ideal for recording and making music. It will be helpful when you want to buy any laptop which is not present in our list and based upon the guidelines you can do your research and find your laptop for music production or DJing on your own.

Don’t understand the technical jibber jabber of computer hardware? Feel free to skip to the list of our top laptop picks for music production.

Important Things to Check on a Laptop for DJing & Making Music

choosing specs for music production laptop

Hardware is one of the most crucial things to check in a laptop for music production, regardless of you need it for DJing or just producing the music in your studio.

Choosing the hardware of your laptop shouldn’t be that hard if you already know what DAW software you’ll use to make music. Just check the recommended hardware to run the DAW software you want to use and buy the laptop with same hardware specifications or if your budget allows, buy the laptop with more powerful hardware than recommended, it will future-proof your device.

But, if you’re unsure about the DAW software and want to buy the laptop which could let you use any DAW software then below is an ideal configuration to look for in a laptop for music production and recording purposes.

Powerful multi-core processor

Always pick the laptop with quad-core or hexa-core processor for music production because extra cores help to render the music files faster. Of course, the best processor to pick will be Intel’s new hexa-core i7 processor (i7-8750H or i7-8850H) if you’re not on a budget, but if you’re looking for a budget laptop for music production, then Intel’s quad-core i5 processor is also a fairly decent choice.

Remember -

Never buy the laptop with dual-core processor for music production, not even laptop with dual-core i7 processors. Instead, prefer buying a laptop with quad-core i5 processor, they are more powerful than the dual-core i7 processor laptops. You can check out our guides on Intel Core i7 laptops and Intel Core i5 laptops to find the best Intel quad-core processor powered laptops.

You can also buy an AMD powered laptops, in fact, the new Ryzen mobile CPU looks very promising in terms of performance, but you might have to struggle a bit to find the right drivers for your midi controller and other audio peripherals.

More than 8GB of RAM (16GB Recommended)

For basic music production works, 8GB of RAM is more than enough to run any DAW software, but if you use a lot of plugins and work with multiple tracks simultaneously then you’ll need a laptop with more RAM (16GB or even 32GB). Also, make sure that the laptop you buy has extra RAM slots so that you can upgrade the RAM in future.

Hard Drive Solid State Drive

Solid state drive is highly recommended for the laptop which will be used for recording because SSDs don’t have any moving parts, so they stay quiet, and reading and writing speeds of SSDs are also far better than hard drives so booting of OS and launching of bulky DAW software will be lightning fast with SSDs.

As far as size is concerned, the 512GB SSD will be best considering the large size of DAW software, but if you’re on a budget, then you can buy the laptop with small sized SSD (256GB or 128GB) and use the external hard drive to store your other data.

However, if you’re on an extreme budget and cannot afford the laptop with SSD for your music production work then make sure to buy the laptop with a 7200RPM hard drive. The 5400RPM hard drives are very slow and can reduce the overall speed of your computer despite powerful CPU or higher amount of RAM.

You can also buy the laptops with hybrid drives (SSHD) for music production. They are faster than laptops with traditional hard drives and costs just a little extra.

Mediocre GPU

The integrated graphics on newer generation processors are so powerful that you no more need dedicated GPU in a laptop for music production but having a dedicated GPU will undeniably aid if you use graphics-heavy plugins with the DAW software. So, you don’t need a top of the line GPU for recording and making music but having an entry-level one from Nvidia like MX150 or an equivalent from AMD will definitely help to improve the overall performance of the laptop.

Well, if you are the one who would like to play all the latest games alongside music production, then you will need a better graphics backed laptop (with Nvidia GTX 1050 or 1060 GPU). You can check out our gaming laptop buying guides; they will help you to buy the best laptop for music production and gaming for yourself.

Note – All dedicated GPUs come with its separate cooling fans, and when you do something intensive they run at pretty high speeds making a lot of noise, so if you want a laptop for music recording then laptops with powerful GPUs might not be the right choice unless you have a two-room recording setup.

Apart from hardware, other things such as the display, ports and slots, and of-course noise of cooling fans are also very important things to check in the laptop which will be used for music production and DJing.

Starting with the display, we aren’t going to emphasize much on the resolution of the screen, we aren’t saying a music production laptop need to have a 2K or a 4K resolution display, but make sure that you have a clear, vivid, and large enough display to evidently see the music timelines and work accordingly. That said, make sure your laptop’s display comes with at least Full HD resolution.

As far as size is concerned, we’d suggest going with a large sized laptop (15 or 17-inch preferably) for the people who will be using their laptop mostly from the studio or any fixed place but for DJing, we think smaller 13-inch or 14-inch laptop will be an optimum size as DJs have to travel a lot and perform live at different places.

The number of ports and input slots also plays a very vital role in choosing a music production laptop. Because, you’ll have to connect multiple devices such as microphones, amplifier, speakers, midi controllers, and more to make music. So make sure, the laptop you’re going to get have an abundant number of ports. On an optimal note, you can always use USB hubs and port extenders, to connect multiple devices to your laptop for music production.

Last but not the least, the laptop you buy for music production should have a very good thermal management system. The laptop should have large-enough vents to easily ventilate the inside heat, and fans of the laptop should also be as silent as possible so that its noise don’t hinder while recording audio.

So, these are the important things to check in a laptop which will be used for making music and DJing and believe us, finding the laptop with all the aforementioned aspects takes a lot of time. So, if you don’t want to baffle your mind by researching and sifting different laptop models then below is the list of our most recommended laptops for recording and making music which are tested by our team of laptop experts and proven to satisfy all the requirements of musicians and DJs.

Best Laptops for Music Production – Top Picks

1. MacBook Pro 15 with Touch Bar Our Top Pick

Apple MacBook Pro with Touchbar - best macbook for music production

Apple’s MacBook Pro series of laptops are currently the market’s best and class-leading devices when it comes to music production. Although they can be used as a multipurpose laptop, they hold their strong points in music production and recording. The laptop comes with a solid set of hardware, which gives it all the necessary performing power and abilities to handle music production software smoothly. Under the hood, it has a 2.2GHz six-core Intel Core i7 processor with 9MB shared L3 cache. The processor needs no introduction and is undeniably, an able and powerful processor. Moreover, it can turbo boost up to 4.1GHz under heavy usage. The device comes with 16GB of RAM and a 256GB of fast, secure, and ultra-efficient SSD storage. The laptop is also aided by a powerful AMD Radeon Pro 555x GPU and automatic graphics switching Intel UHD Graphics 630 chipset for that extra punch of power when you want to edit your vacation pictures and videos.

Apart from the power and abilities of the MacBook Pro, what makes it best for music production is macOS. macOS, by default, comes with a standard set of editing tools, which are extremely useful for music producers and in addition to that you can also use Logic Pro X – one of the best DAW softwares available exclusively for Apple computers. Moreover, almost every popular DAW and music production software is available for macOS, making it the right machine to house all your music related applications and tools.

MacBook Pro is known to provide the highest level of power, performance, and efficiency needed to produce music without any lag or delay in the music recording, and rendering. On top of this, the device comes with excellent battery backup, which makes it an ideal choice for DJs who like to mix and produce music on-the-go and also for the students majoring in music for uninterrupted learning.

This MacBook Pro model, in particular, comes with a Touch bar which can be used in multiple ways. Touch bar can come very handy to music producers while scrolling through the timeline and minimal to maximal tunings and tweakings. But, do note that the new MacBook Pro 15 comes with just four ThunderBolt USB Type-C ports. That said, to connect all your audio gear and peripherals, you’ll need USB Type-C hubs and dongles, and sadly Apple doesn’t include one in the box. This might be the biggest let down for most musicians and composers who wanted to buy the MacBook Pro but do note that there are hardly any laptops that can match the performance and reliability that MacBooks offer. And, that’s the reason why most professional music producers recommend and use MacBook Pro for making music and djing.

It sports a 15.6-inch full HD display with brightness of up to 350-nits and it is an IPS panel so color-accuracy and viewing angles are also excellent. As far as performance is concerned, the Razer Blade 15 is the power packed machine with powerful Intel Core i7 hexa-core processor, 16GB of DDR4 RAM and 1TB HDD + 128GB SSD or 2TB HDD + 256GB of SSD storage (depending upon the variant you choose). Now, if we talk about its graphics performance then that’s where this laptop excels than all its competitors. The Razer Blade 15, being an ultrabook houses powerful Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 GPU inside with the dedicated graphics memory of mammoth 6GB. And, that makes it one of the most capable ultrabooks in the segment which can handle both music production and gaming without any problems.

The laptop also offers decent connectivity options with three USB 3.1 ports, a Thunderbolt 3 USB Type-C port, an Ethernet port, a full-sized HDMI and a Mini Display port and a 3.5mm audio jack.

So, overall the Razer Blade 15 is a power-packed ultrabook which can handle almost everything you throw at it, but for whom it is exactly made for? Of-course its lightweight chassis will make it a perfect partner for DJs, to make music on-the-go and perform live and even enjoy games at leisure, but Razer Blade 15 packs in the desktop grade performance hardware inside and thus it can also be used as a studio computer with multiple display setup. So overall, Razer Blade 15 is the best choice for anyone who wants a powerful and lightweight laptop for music production and gaming.

Microsoft Surface Book 2 comes in two different sizes, 13 and 15-inch, and you can choose from different processors, RAM and storage capacity as per your requirements and budget. However, we recommend its 15-inch variant for music production with quad-core Intel i7 Processor, 16GB of RAM and 256GB of SSD storage. However, the device isn’t meant for gaming. It is designed for productivity tasks such as photo-video editing, and making music and djing, and we think it serves the purpose quite well.

Apple has finally confirmed their Fall event for iPad Pro and MacBook on October 30

“There’s more in the making” is what Apple is tag lining their upcoming event with. This ‘sort of’ teaser has sparked a lot of excitement among Apple lovers. The company has already held a gigantic and successful Apple event a little over a month ago in which they released their latest iPhones and Apple Watch. Seems like Apple isn’t planning on going out of the spotlight anytime soon.

The date Apple has set for Apple’s subsequent fall event is October 30, taking place at the Howard Gilman Opera House in New York City. That’s right, the venue is different too unlike the Steve Jobs Theater in Cupertino where they held their previous event in September.

Although, this is not a complete surprise. There have been rumors about the iPad revamp since forever and was long overdue as well. It only made sense that Apple would come around this year work on their abandoned tablet series that hadn’t received a major update since over a year. Apart from the iPad Pro (the most certain unveiling), there are a few more innovations that we are expecting to be a part of this event.

What could be ‘in the making’?

Here’s our take on what Apple users should be expecting in the 30 Oct reveal.

The iPad Pro (of course)

We are expecting a dual iPad Pro reveal from Apple to make up for the lost time. The 11-inch size and a redesigned 12.9-inch size iPad. The size variety may come with the introduction to Face ID, USB C port, and a notch less design but with the loss of Touch ID and Smart Connector.

The MacBook

The 13 and 15 inch MacBook Pros were updated back in July without any formal event. Nonetheless, we do expect at least 1 major MacBook update to be a part of their fall get together.

logic-pro-x-touch-bar-support-macbook-pro

We think that Apple might replace their customary 12-inch MacBook with a 13-inch version. According to past resurfaced reports, the company is aiming at keeping the range between $1000-$1500  with the inclusion of Touch ID and the exclusion of Touch Bar.

The iMac

The new hardware of the improved iMac is said to have “significant display-performance upgrades”.

According to past rumors, the MacBook Pro might include the True Tone display support. This allows an adjustment to the color temperature based on lighting ambiance, although it’s still debatable if it only refers to True Tone on the iMac.

The Mac mini

Among all outdated Apple devices, the Mac mini certainly takes the cake. Still possessing the 2014 hardware, the Mac mini could be bumped up majorly according to rumors that were circulated in August 2018.

Apple will be focusing on facilitating the needs of Pro users in their 2018 refresh according to Mark Gurman and Debby Wu. Like every other Apple upgrade, higher specs mean higher prices:

Apple is also planning the first upgrade to the Mac mini in about four years. It’s a Mac desktop that doesn’t include a screen, keyboard, or mouse in the box and costs $500. The computer has been favored because of its lower price, and it’s popular with app developers, those running home media centers, and server farm managers. For this year’s model, Apple is focusing primarily on these pro users, and new storage and processor options are likely to make it more expensive than previous versions, the people said.

The AirPods and AirPower

Techies are expecting Apple to come forward with their previously announced AirPower wireless charging pad and the wireless charging case for AirPods earphones.

The company teased the reveal in September with an updated version of AirPods including Hey Siri support before the event. The products were surprisingly not mentioned in the following event and yet remain to be seen.

The OS updates

Apple might grab the opportunity to release details about their latest OS updates that have been in Beta testing since September. Yes, we are expecting the debut of the iOS 12.1 and the macOS 10.14.1.

With these updates, Apple might release the long-awaited multi-caller Group Face time feature and audio chats. This, along with the support for dual SIM functionality that is going to enable the Series 4’s EKG functionality.

The watchOS may too be getting ahead and include the  ECG support for U.S. Apple Watch users.

Just weeks after the Surface Pro 6, Samsung has just uncovered their improvement on the Galaxy Book – the Galaxy Book2. Samsung’s with their new Galaxy Book2 is stepping away from their long abiding tradition of Intel processors. Samsung has managed to come up with a bright, powerful, sleek yet a sensible display that is perky enough to carry around for the entire day.

In the Book

Samsung’s latest notebook as the second-generation device that ditches the Intel hardware Core M3 and Core i5 configuration options for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 850. Samsung has improved the advanced system on a chip (SoC) by coupling it with a potent octa-core processor that includes an onboard graphics processor for stellar all-around performance and productivity. But, that’s not all the new Samsung 2-in-1 has to offer.

“The way the world works is undergoing an incredible transformation, and users need technology that keeps them connected and ready for anything when they’re out in the world getting things done,” said Alanna Cotton, Senior Vice President and General Manager at Samsung Electronics America.

“The Galaxy Book2 brings together Samsung’s hardware and connectivity leadership with innovations from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and Microsoft for a two-in-one that uniquely delivers PC productivity and superior mobility.”

The design too has been overhauled. The revamped design is quite similar to the Surface. Nonetheless, the Galaxy Book2 still looks a lot like the swarm of 2-in-1 convertible Windows 10 tablets in the market. Samsung claims that the Galaxy Book2 is capable of gigabit-class LTE – a feature that was an optional addition in the past Books. The X20 LTE modem in the notebook offers 4G connectivity so you’re always connected to your network data like in your smartphone.

The Galaxy Book 2 is also capable of lasting a “multi work day” on a single charge. To be specific, the battery estimate is up to 20 hours if the device is running of the Windows S operating system that it is shipped with. That is a commendable improvement from the 11-hour life of the Galaxy Book. The company however, has decided not to lose the 4GB of built-in RAM but did bump up the default storage from 64GB to a decent 128GB as a default setting.

The Super AMOLED  display’s resolution is pretty neat too, offering 216 pixels per inch with its 2,160 x 1,440 panel. The Galaxy Book 2 packs a bunch of ports including a microSD card reader, a pair of USB-C,  and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The Galaxy Book2’s speakers include Dolby Atmos support. Just like its flagship phones, Samsung has tuned the sound with the company’s AKG division. You will also find a fingerprint sensor and infrared camera on the back of the device for secure login via Windows Hello. The camera: fine, but for the fingerprint sensor its an awkward enough position.

Outside the Book

The addition of the rear kick stand adds convertibility to the Book. That sticking to the current trends, is a must-have these days in notebooks. The Surface Pro-like hinge allows you to angle the 12-inch display on a flat surface. The box comes with an included keyboard that magnetically attaches to the bezel on the bottom, inspired much from the Surface keyboard. The body is more or less the same as the Galaxy Book.

Samsung Galaxy Book2 Stand mode

Samsung Galaxy Book2 | Image – Samsung

Though it does have an additional hinge and a back stand but apart from slimming down the bezels a bit and changing curved corners to square ones, there isn’t much to be excited about the exterior. Moreover, the new and improved 2-in-1 Book is slightly larger and bulkier as well. But not so much that we wouldn’t call it portable.

Pricing and Availability

Get the Samsung Galaxy Book2 boxed with an S Pen stylus and keyboard, and it will cost you $999. The launch of the device is expected to be on November 2nd on AT&T, Microsoft, and Samsung’s online stores. Now the Apple’s 12.9-inch iPad Pro and Microsoft’s Surface Pro 6 priced for $799 and $899 respectively, do not come with the included options of a stylus and keyboard cover. So there goes the affordability of these devices.

The overall verdict of tech reviewers has been mostly positive. All of them are pretty ecstatic about testing the 20 hour battery life. We have seen good stand ups from Snapdragon machines in the past and getting out from S mode to Windows 10 is going to be easier than ever. While most of us can vouch for the performance, productivity, and longevity of the device, it’s a little too soon to comment if the Intel to Snapdragon jump was a wise move for Samsung.

LG and Lenovo Might be Working on a 13-inch Foldable Tablet

If we recall, Lenovo has been playing with the idea of bendable devices for the past few years now. In 2016, Lenovo released a prototype of a bendable mobile that could wrap around your wrist. The device however, never evolved past a concept and Lenovo never released a proper functional bendable mobile. Sometime later in 2017, Lenovo unveiled a concept of a bendable Folio tablet that can be transformed into a smartphone and can be switched into different modes just by a few movements of the hand.

Since then we have seen double display panels in a foldable architecture but never a single screened bendable display. The reason is that it’s not quite simple. For a device to be bendable, it should have a flexible battery and a motherboard too.

With rumors floating about Samsung working on a bendable display, Lenovo decided to jump at it again. Turns out that Lenovo and LG might be collaborating to introduce a foldable 13-inch tablet.

“We know that LG Display has developed a 13-inch foldable panel and signed a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) with Lenovo,”

An industry official said. “The official development project has started and we plan to supply it in the second half of next year.”

How does it work?

The concept will kind of work around the idea of a ‘convertible’ device. The 13-inch can be bent into different form factors. It is unclear at this point if this device is going to be Windows based or Android based. It obviously makes sense for LG to work on the display and Lenovo on the device hardware.

Although Lenovo has a strong track record with Windows based devices, the 7.8-inch Folio was an Android tablet. It had a hinge in its middle that allows the entire thing to fold into a 5.5-inch, dual screen smartphone style device.

The panel is organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) based and features a flexible screen. the 13 inch screen size is certainly bigger than the other foldable panels prepared by competitors. The foldable prototype that Samsung is working on is reportedly of 7.3 inches. Moreover, Huawei is working with BOE in China to develop an 8-inch foldable device.

Considering that the 13-inch panel large enough to be used as a laptop, so even when folded it won’t be handy to be used as a smartphone. A 13-inch panel with a 4:3 aspect ratio would be about 9 inches when folded. So at a 16-to-9 aspect ratio, it will become 8 inches wide in a converted state. Due to these facts, we have reason to believe that the LG Display 13-inch Foldable Panel is an attempt to develop a tablet like device that can be folded, not a phone. To be fair, it makes sense for tablets to fall into the flexible category instead of phones. No one would practically want to shrink an already palm-sized device.

“Considering the durability and usability aspects of the display industry, a tablet or notebook can be more suitable for a foldable panel,” said LG Display. He added, “This observation is supported by the fact that PC makers, not smartphones, are trying to supply panels. Lenovo is the world’s largest PC manufacturer. LG Display is promoting a 13-inch foldable panel to Lenovo as well as Dell and LG Electronics. This is a strategy to pioneer and expand the foldable device and panel market by allowing these PC makers to develop finished products. A representative of LG Display said, “I can not confirm the contents related to the development of the foldable panel and the customers.”
