    Casey Jr. Circus Train

65 years ago—just 14 days after Disneyland opened in 1955—Casey Jr. Circus Train rolled into Fantasyland, delighting children and adult guests ever since. Casey Jr., the brave little engine known for his role in the 1941 animated film “Dumbo,” features individually designed and vibrantly painted train cars. Each animal cage and ornate sleigh is special, as guests clamored to ride in their favorite vehicle.

    Casey Jr. Circus Train

Train riders in the early days had relatively little to gaze upon, as the colorful train did not traverse through much scenery. However, that changed in 1956, when the Storybook Land Canal Boats opened. The miniature scenes of fairy tale villages and vistas provided the perfect backdrop to passengers aboard Casey Jr. Circus Train as well.

    Casey Jr. Circus Train

Since then, this whimsical attraction has remained largely unchanged. A charming addition in 1983 welcomed a lively new voice of the circus ringmaster, which became part of the narration. And, as always, when the train heads back to the station, alert travelers can hear Casey Jr. himself, giving that most famous of pep-talks, “I think I can, I think I can.”

#DisneyMagicMoments: Cooking Up the Magic — Commemorate the 65th Anniversary of Disneyland with Walt

Cooking Up the Magic At Home

What better way to commemorate the 65th anniversary of Disneyland than creating one of Walt’s favorite recipes at home – Chili and Beans. Not one for highly seasoned or spicy cuisine, Walt enjoyed food that was hardy and filling, and this dish fit the bill.

Several variations of Walt’s personal Chili and Beans recipe can be found in the Walt Disney Archives – with the first recipe dating back to around 1958. Over the years, Disney chefs have refined the recipe for park guests, and today we are sharing the recipe served at Carnation Café at Disneyland park. Their version adds a bit more seasoning than the original recipe from Walt … for a subtle, spicy kick!

When you dish up this bowl of nostalgia, be sure to serve with saltine crackers – just the way Walt liked it.

Walt's Chili and Beans from Carnation Cafe at Disneyland Park

Walt’s Chili and Beans from Carnation Café at Disneyland Park

    Serves 6 to 8

    • 1/4 cup olive oil, divided
    • 3/4 pounds beef stew meat
    • 1 small onion, diced
    • 1 medium green pepper, diced
    • 4 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 pound ground beef
    • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
    • 1 1/2 tablespoons chili powder
    • 1 tablespoon onion powder
    • 3/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
    • 3 tablespoons tomato paste
    • 2 plum tomatoes, diced
    • 1 (28 ounce) can diced tomatoes
    • 2 tablespoons beef base
    • 1 1/2 cups water
    • 1 (14.5 ounce) can pinto beans, rinsed and drained
    • Coarse salt, to taste

    • 1/2 cup sour cream
    • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
    • 2 diced tomatoes, for garnish

    1. Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil in large Dutch oven, over medium heat for 5 minutes. Add stew meat and sauté for 10 minutes, until meat is browned on all sides. Remove stew meat from pan and set aside.
    2. Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of oil to pan, heat for 3 minutes over medium heat.
    3. Add onions and green pepper. Sauté 8-10 minutes, until soft. Add garlic and sauté one minute longer, until garlic is fragrant.
    4. Add ground beef. Cook, stirring occasionally to break up large chunks of beef, for 10-12 minutes, until beef is no longer pink. Drain excess fat.
    5. Return stew meat to the Dutch oven with ground beef mixture. Add ground cumin, chili powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, tomato paste, fresh, diced tomatoes, beef base, and water.
    6. Bring chili to a simmer. Cover and simmer over low heat for 3 hours, until stew meat is tender.
    7. Add pinto beans. Simmer for 10 minutes, until beans are warm.
    8. Season with salt, as needed.
    9. Garnish with sour cream, shredded cheddar cheese, and diced tomatoes

Note: This recipe has been converted from a larger quantity in the restaurant kitchens. The flavor profile may vary from the restaurant’s version. As a reminder while preparing this recipe, please supervise children who are helping or nearby.

by Michael Ramirez, Public Relations Director, Disneyland Resort

On this day, 65 years ago, a new form of entertainment came into the world. Successful movie producer and animation pioneer, Walt Disney, had long dreamt of a place where family members of all ages could have fun together. Drawing on his own vivid imagination, as well as those of his talented colleagues, Walt created a magical place that has been beloved since opening day.

A star-studded television special broadcasted the inaugural day to the world. 18 attractions were unveiled, many of which still thrill guests, including the Disneyland Railroad, Jungle Cruise and Fantasyland favorites King Arthur Carrousel, Peter Pan’s Flight and Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.

Disneyland quickly generated a loyal following with more guests arriving enthusiastically in the days that followed, as well as carrying word of this magical place to others. Soon it was the de rigueur place to be seen by celebrities, dignitaries and even heads of state.

Over the years, the park has evolved, with the first major expansion in 1959, which included three new state-of-the-art attractions (including the world’s first tubular steel roller coaster). Other notable expansions included 1966 with New Orleans Square, Mickey’s Toontown in 1993, and most recently, the successful opening of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in 2019. Today, the Disneyland Resort encompasses two theme parks, three resort hotels and the Downtown Disney District.

But beyond the attractions, the sparkling façade of Sleeping Beauty Castle and the iconic snacks of corn dogs, popcorn and churros, or perhaps embedded in them, many guests find a treasured nostalgia, and this love of Disneyland is handed down from generation to generation as a beloved gift.

To commemorate the occasion, “A Pre-Opening Report from Disneyland” is now available on Disney+. Originally aired on July 13, 1955, Walt provides a final look at the many details necessary to ensure that the park will be ready. He begins by showing the audience a large map of the site, then introduces Winston Hibler, who provides a behind-the-scenes tour of how Studio technicians went about designing and building the unusual rides and shows about to open.

With the eternal optimism that is the heart of Disneyland, we look forward to welcoming you back and celebrating this milestone together soon.

    New Orleans Square

Disneyland Resort is like its own little city, bustling with activity 24 hours a day. That’s why we are introducing a new video series called “Dusk to Dawn, Dawn to Dusk.” This time-lapse series will highlight the many goings on from either dusk to dawn, or dawn to dusk throughout the Disneyland Resort.

This video is from the vantage point of New Orleans Square, starting with “Fantasmic!” and ending the next morning with guests traveling at lightspeed toward Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. In between, you’ll see the hard work of our third-shift cast members and the annual Disneyland Resort Canoe Races.

    Some imagination, huh?

Details Revealed for Avengers Campus and Other New Experiences Coming to Disneyland Resort

    Avengers Campus

At this weekend’s D23 Expo 2019, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products Chairman Bob Chapek revealed exciting announcements and updates about what’s coming to the Disneyland Resort! Next year, the highly-anticipated Avengers Campus is opening in Disney California Adventure park, while the all-new “Magic Happens” parade will debut in Disneyland park. In addition, more details were shared for Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, the first major Mickey-themed ride-through attraction, opening in 2022 at Disneyland park.

Here’s everything you need to know:

    Avengers Campus

Avengers Campus to Open in 2020 at Disney California Adventure Park

You can soon suit up alongside your favorite Super Heroes at the Avengers Campus, beginning in 2020 at Disney California Adventure park. This campus is set up by the Avengers to recruit the next generation of Super Heroes.

    Avengers Campus

“In some ways, these new campuses are like the Avengers themselves: a group of diverse individuals who have teamed up for the same purpose,” said Scot Drake, Creative Executive, Marvel Global Portfolio, Walt Disney Imagineering. “This collection of unique addresses—each dedicated to a different discipline—have been brought together to champion the next generation of heroes.”

    Avengers Campus

The first key address at the Avengers Campus will be the Worldwide Engineering Brigade – also known as “WEB” – which will house our new Spider-Man experience, the first Disney ride-through attraction to feature this iconic Super Hero.

During an open house at WEB, the aspiring inventors are excited to invite you for a test drive of their latest invention: the “Web Slinger” vehicle, which allows you to sling webs just like Spider-Man! The attraction gives you a taste of what it’s like to have actual super powers as you help Spider-Man collect Spider-Bots that have run amok.

    Avengers Campus

Avengers Campus will also feature Pym Test Kitchen. Just as Ant-Man and The Wasp use “Pym Particles” to grow and shrink just about anything, Pym Technologies is using the latest innovations to grow and shrink food at this eatery!

    Avengers Campus

You will also find heroic encounters throughout the campus, including Black Widow, Ant-Man and The Wasp, Doctor Strange, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Super Heroes from Wakanda and Asgard, and Iron Man.

    Avengers Campus

As Super Heroes continue to assemble at the campus, one of its iconic buildings will be the Avengers Headquarters where you may catch a glimpse of the Avengers along its rooftops.

    Avengers Campus

This building, which will open in phase two, will become the future entrance to a brand-new E-Ticket attraction where you will step on board a Quinjet and fly alongside the Avengers in an epic adventure to Wakanda and beyond! You will team up alongside the Avengers in a battle to save our world against one of the most powerful villains they have ever faced. Imagineers are hard at work conceiving an all-new innovative ride system to put you in the middle of this action.

All-New ‘Magic Happens’ Parade to Debut in Spring 2020 at Disneyland Park

Debuting in spring 2020, the all-new, extraordinary “Magic Happens” parade will travel down Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland park.

Celebrating awe-inspiring moments of magic—both large and small—that are at the heart of so many Disney stories, “Magic Happens” reminds us we don’t need wings to fly, shooting stars were made to wish upon, and magic doesn’t stop at midnight.

This daytime spectacular will feature stunning floats, beautiful costumes, and beloved Disney characters – all led by Mickey Mouse and his pals.

On her voyager wa‘a (or canoe), Moana journeys forth on the crest of a beautiful wave, inspired by beautiful koa wood carvings inset with LED panels, providing a dazzling glimpse into the magic the ocean holds.

Celebrating the magic that happens when Miguel strums the guitar of Ernesto de la Cruz, the spectacular float inspired by the Disney and Pixar film “Coco” bridges the Land of the Living and the Land of the Dead with vibrant marigolds. Fantastical alebrije spirit animals join the procession, along with Miguel’s dog Danté.

The regal grand finale of “Magic Happens” parade celebrates magical moments from classic Disney stories, including the trio of fairies from “Sleeping Beauty” who transform Princess Aurora’s gown from pink to blue and back again!

In addition, the parade will feature even more floats and characters, an energetic musical score and a new song produced in partnership with singer-songwriter Todrick Hall. The high-energy music combines this original song with classic Disney tunes in a fresh, contemporary style.

    Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway to Open in 2022 at Disneyland Park

As we’ve previously shared, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway—the first major Mickey-themed ride-through attraction—is coming to Disneyland park in 2022.

    Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway

The action takes place at the El CapiTOON Theater in Mickey’s Toontown, where Mickey and Minnie are premiering their newest short, “Perfect Picnic.” Before you enter the cinema, you’ll experience a special exhibit created by the Toontown Hysterical Society featuring costumes and props from the toon world.

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway puts you inside the wacky and unpredictable world of Disney Channel’s Emmy® Award-winning “Mickey Mouse” cartoon shorts! Once you step into the cartoon world of Mickey and Minnie, you’ll board a train with Goofy as the engineer. Then, one magical moment after the next leads you to a zany, out-of-control adventure filled with surprising twists and turns.

With an original story and lovable theme song, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway uses state-of-the-art technologies and dazzling visual effects to transform the cartoon world into an incredible and immersive multi-dimensional experience.

Stay tuned to the Disney Parks Blog for more news on these exciting experiences coming soon to the Disneyland Resort!
