Moving your company's data into the cloud is a big step forward, one that many people remain uncertain of. The idea that you can transfer a company's processes, applications and data into a seemingly theoretical form of storage sounds like something out of science fiction, but it's very much a reality now being experienced by organizations everywhere.
What is the cloud?
The cloud is a form of remote storage, enabling an individual or organization to store their applications and information on the internet instead of through a computer's hard drive, which is what we have traditionally done since computers first became such a significant part of daily and working life.
Companies that do decide to store their data in the cloud have a choice: they can either go with a public cloud, a private cloud or a hybrid of the two. Figuring out which form of storage is best for your company is dependent on how critical your data and applications are to the business; however, you area also bound by any regulatory or protection requirements and these should also be taken into consideration. Safe data storage is imperative.
Why would a company need to use a private cloud?
As public clouds will contain data and applications for multiple businesses, this makes it an unsuitable form of storage for a variety of businesses and organizations, such as those working within the health sector. If your business must comply with rules regarding security of data then using private cloud storage will offer you both benefits and security to keep your company's valuable information under wraps.
Private cloud storage has the advantage of generally being more secure than a public cloud. No other company is able to access the data stored on a private cloud as it's a controlled server. This solution enables company IT staff to manage and maintain the servers, but they can also be located in the data center of a cloud service provider, which is then accessed through private and secure network links.
Public and shared clouds are less reliable than private, but private clouds also have the benefit of being more manageable and flexible; after all, the storage is related only to your business it enables internal workers to install their own servers and hardware and better manage the workload of those servers.
Does my company need a private cloud?
Private cloud storage is not necessary for every company in need of data storage, but the advantages of the private cloud could easily benefit any company that's able to make use of it. It's more secure, more manageable (with the right budget of course), and using it can even lead to your company becoming more environmentally friendly!
Despite the initial concerns people have had over cloud storage, the process and systems are improving all the time and is fast becoming the preferred method of storage amongst individuals and businesses alike. It very well may be time for your own organization to make the big transfer and get your head in the clouds with everyone else.
