If you have allergies and they cause your eyes to become itchy and sore, the chances are that you’re desperate for a way to ease the symptoms! Luckily, there are a few different things that you can do to help your eyes feel better.

Rinse your eyes

Allergies are caused when things like pollen and dust get into your eyes and nose, and your body interprets them as a threat. It releases histamines in order to try and combat the threat, which is what causes symptoms like red and swollen eyes, stuffy noses, and sore throats.

A simple and effective way to treat your allergies is to get rid of the thing causing them, so if you are reacting to dust and pollen that’s in your eyes, then rinsing your eyes will go a long way towards combating the allergy. Plus, the cool water will have a soothing effect for some instant relief.

Allergy eye drops

It’s not always that convenient to rinse your eyes; if you’re wearing makeup and you don’t want it to go everywhere, or you just aren’t somewhere with a bathroom, then it’s not always an option.

In these cases, allergy eye drops can work wonders because they combat the histamines causing the allergic reaction while providing soothing relief at the same time.

Stay on top of the housework

If allergies are a problem for you, then it’s a good idea to create an environment at home that is as free from allergens as possible to have at least one safe spot where you know you won’t be too badly affected.

Some ways that you can clean your home to minimize allergies are:

  • Ensure that you are using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter as this will better pick up very small particles that could be causing allergies. It’s a good idea to vacuum once or twice a week, particularly if you have pets.
  • Keep your home as clutter-free as possible. Piles of clothing are a great place for dust and other allergens to gather, so removing them will help to minimize them.
  • When cleaning the bathroom, pay special attention to areas that may grow moulds, like the shower curtain and bath mats. It’s a good idea to throw these in the wash periodically.
  • Wash your sheets weekly in very hot water. Hot water is needed in order to kill off dust mites. It’s also a good idea to wash your curtains periodically, as they can attract a lot of dust and pollen.

There are actually some foods you can eat that may help you with the symptoms of allergies. Some of these foods are:

  • Ginger. Ginger has naturally occurring anti-inflammatory properties, which means that it’s helpful against the symptoms of allergies. Try some fresh ginger in a stir fry or some ginger tea.
  • Bee pollen. There is some evidence to suggest that eating local honey will help to inoculate you against local pollen, which is great news if you have hayfever. Try some on toast or in hot water with lemon to soothe a scratchy throat.
  • Fruit. Vitamin C has been shown to decrease the respiratory tract's irritation caused by hayfever, so load up on fruits and veggies during the hayfever season.
