RSS Feed Don?t be a turkey? like these folks

Another great read is an open letter opined by a college junior and published in Southern Illinois University's student newspaper. The letter is written in response to an earlier article penned here by a well-meaning nutritionist representing the school's wellness center cautioning students on how to avoid a dread holiday weight gain of one pound! The absolute horrors! Ironically, Gill also published an article just last month on the dangers of eating disorders and the need for body acceptance. It seems that every 'body' is perfect, that is, so long as you meet some arbitrary definition of thinness.

RSS Feed Target Women: Cars

The latest from the indomitable Sarah Haskins. I drive a sporty yet fuel-efficient silver sedan with plenty of room for the important stuff, you know, bike rack, rollerblades, 40-pound bags of dirt and mulch, shopping finds… My husband has a gas-guzzling Jeep he won’t let me drive. How about you?

RSS Feed Banish Facebook diet advertisements

I'm on Facebook and the blog has its Facebook network group, so I see those ridiculous dieting ads in my sidebar every time I log in. I've become so desensitized to dieting ads by now that I usually tune them out altogether and those that do catch my eye I recognize as the ridiculous snake oil claims they really are. I mean, come on... Has anyone seen Oprah recently? Obviously acai berries aren't the new weight loss superfood she purportedly touts them to be. Not everyone is as impervious to diet ads as I am. RSS Feed Update on Cytomel regime

During my week-long September series on hypothroidism, I mentioned that I had just been prescribed Cytomel and promised to update interested readers after a few weeks on how its working for me. After a week of phone calls between me and the office, my endocrinologist somewhat reluctantly prescribed a very low 12.5mcg daily dosage [...]

RSS Feed Back to our roots ? root vegetables, that is

Root vegetables may look intimidating, but they?re easily found in most large supermarkets and farmer?s markets. There are many different ways to enjoy roots: You can braise them or roast them ? slower cooking releases their sweet and nutty flavors. You can season them with your favorite herbs and spices or a touch of apple cider and brown sugar and a sprinkling of buttery-cinnamon walnuts or braise them in a warming winter stew. After the jump is a guide to common roots, along with a few recipe suggestions.

RSS Feed Food for Thought: School nutrition programs, eating disorders, poverty and more

Mondays are always really busy days for me, so instead of detailed commentary, I’ll just offer a round-up of headlines in the news. According to a 2006 CDC report, the Huntington, W.V. area is the fattest town in the nation. It’s also among the poorest — its 19 percent poverty rate is much higher than [...]
