October is Diversity Awareness Month.
I was fascinated to read that Carole Copeland Thomas, MBA, founded Diversity Awareness Month in October of 2006.
The following is Carole's definition of diversity:
"Diversity is understanding, appreciating, and ultimately managing difference and similarities at the same time. Its reach is all-inclusive and may represent categories such as: Class, Race, Gender, Age, Religion, Sexual Orientation, Physical Disabilities, Nationalities, Political Beliefs and others. To achieve its maximum effectiveness, diversity requires: 1. Your Personal Examination 2. Your Individual Commitment 3. Your Own Curiosity 4. A Continuous Learning Effort"
Carole's definition of diversity is complimentary to the What Color Is Your Brain? approach for appreciating the diversity of our Brain Color personalities.
This week I want to share the following Brain Color Clues to help you celebrate and understand what makes Yellow Brainers feel appreciated:
1. Saying ?Please? and ?Thank you? 2. Recognition of their accomplishments 3. Reaching their goals 5. Financial compensation 6. Follow through on projects 7. Honesty in relationships 8. Reliability to get a job done well 9. Respect for their dependability and stability

Carole, "Thank You!" for creating a celebration to acknowledge and honor our unique attributes and abilities!

One of our Jewish New Year traditions is celebrating Rosh Hashanah with my cousin's from my father's side of our family.
Another tradition is my contributions to the holiday meal. I baked our dear friend, Joyce's French Apple Pie and my Black Bear Raspberry Pie.
I was given the recipe for the Raspberry Pie as a gift from the owner of the Black Bear Restaurant located in Drummond, Wisconsin. Years ago, when our sons, Joshua and Noah, were campers at Camp Shewahmegon, we discover the Black Bear Restaurant and it's famous pies. Each year before Parents Visiting Weekend a group of parents would call the restaurant to order and reserve our pies ahead of time.
One year the owner told us she was selling the restaurant. My husband and I were glad for her, however, we were devastated that we would not enjoy our favorite Raspberry Pie.
I asked the owner if she would be willing to share her recipe with me. "I'd be glad to," she said and immediately sat down to write the recipe on a green food check. I have her generous gift taped to the inside of spice cabinet in my kitchen.
Each time I open that cabinet to retrieve some spices, my "Camp Senses" explode with aromas, tastes, laughter and smiles, as if I was lifting my forks to savor my first "summer" bite of Raspberry Pie.
I love sharing the delicious Black Bear Raspberry Pie recipe because it was shared with me. It is a easy "never fail" recipe that constantly receives copious "Oh's" and "Ah's" no matter how many times people have enjoyed it's unforgettable flavor.
Black Bear Raspberry Pie 3 to 4 Cups of Fresh Raspberries Place 1 Cup of Sugar, 3/4 TBS Cornstarch and 1 Cup of Water in a sauce pan. Boil until mixture looks glossy. Add 2 Heaping TBS of Raspberry Jell-O (1 small package) and mix well. Let set for 5 Minute. Gently mix with Raspberries and put into baked pie shell*. Chill until set.
*I make a home-made crust and use the extra dough from the crust to create leaves and/or flowers for decoration. I brush the decorations with a little egg yolk and water mixture, sprinkle them sugar and bake them on a cookie sheet at 400 degrees for about 5 minutes or until they are brown. Once cooled I place the decorations on top of the pie before I place it in the refrigerator to set.
If you are careful about managing your diabetes, please, check your blood sugar level before tasting this pie!
"L'Shanna Tova!" Best Wishes for a Happy, Healthy and Peaceful New Year! May 5769 be a Year as sweet and enjoyable as my Rosh Hashanah Raspberry Pie.

Shirli Gajda is a 7th grade Language Arts teacher at the Lake Zurich Middle School North. We met (and continue to work together) when I had the pleasure and privilege of facilitating What Color Is Your Brain?? Workshops for their the MSN Teacher Institute Days last Spring. To learn more about the MSN "Fabulous Faculty," visit my 5/7/08 blog post: Appreciating Our Teachers.
I love Shirli's Brain Color comments that she share in her emails. Her fluency in Brain Color is artistic and fun! 1. "I recently decide that instead of "yellow with emerging blue spots" that I have headed toward being a "yellow with blue polka-dots". :)
2. "My Brain colors are swirling so much I feel like Willy Wonka!" 3. "Yellow--plan plan schedule plan plan Green--ticked that my first plan didn't work---it was perfect :) Blue--must change plan to accommodate others Orange--Whoooooo-hoooooo! Activity Days!"
I encourage you to follow Shirli's example and "Have Fun" speaking Brain Color!

A "What Makes Us Tick!" Book Review
Last, June 10th, I had the privilege of presenting a What Color Is Your Brain? Workshop at the Schaumburg Business Association Good Morning Schuamburg Breakfast meeting, which was sponsored by Itasca Bank and Trust Co.
I was thrilled that after my presentation, book sales were brisk!
While chatting with Pamela Marte CPCC, a Director and Coach with Sales Results, Inc., about working together; Jeffrey Sophian a Managing Partner of the Business Owners Advisory Group approached the book signing table. Jeff had to decided to purchase a copy of my book and Pamela encouraged him also write a "book review" for his monthly article in The Executives Profit newsletter.
I was delighted... A 2 for 1 Sale!
The following is Jeff's "insightful book review."
"What Color Is Your Brain" by Sheila N.Glazov is as the title page itself asserts "a fun and fascinating approach to understanding yourself and others".
The book breaks down the four quadrants of the brain, assigns each its own color and specifies dominant personality traits of each:
Yellow Brainers need to be right. They appreciate and crave the orderliness of rules, structure and stability in their personal and professional lives.
Blue Brainers are creative and are good at connecting with others, but they are better talkers than listeners.
Green Brainers are known to be knowledge seekers. They like to solve problems, but prefer to work alone.
Orange Brainers seek excitement, adventure and action. They tend to be risk-takers and strongly believe in their own ability to get results.
The book goes on to offer tests to measure not only our most dominant traits but the amount of each color is in our individual mix. Knowing what colors are driving our clients, co-workers, family and friends helps foster more effective, higher performing organizations and personal lives.
What Color Is Your Brain? is a fast reading, easy to follow and fascinating examination of human personality and what "makes us tick".
I highly recommend it."

"Many thanks for the Grand Book Review, Jeff!"

The following is the 5th "Comfort Companion" Story from Purr-fect Pals, my picture book for children with diabetes.
WHAT?S IN A NAME?
Our phone rang at one o?clock one morning. It was Mike, the principal of Joshua?s high school. He asked my husband, Jordan, if Joshua, our son who has Type 1 diabetes, had come home from the basketball game.
"He was home," Jordan said.
Mike then asked Jordan to ask Joshua if he had seen Rob, a classmate, who had not yet come home after the game. Jordan told Mike he would call him back if Joshua knew where Rob was, then he went to our son?s room.
As he opened the door and switched on the light, Jordan saw Joshua fall out of bed and begin convulsing on the floor.
Joshua was having his first low blood-sugar reaction.
Jordan shouted for me to get the Glucagon, a hormone that raises the level of glucose in the blood.

I gave Joshua the Glucagon shot, while Jordan called our volunteer fire department. We were so frightened, yet on the way to the hospital, Jordan and I realized we had experienced a miracle.
Joshua had come home from the basketball game, eaten his snack, and said good night to us at midnight. There was no reason to check on him after he went to bed.
If Mike had not called us an hour later about Joshua?s missing classmate, and if Jordan had not gone into Joshua?s room to ask him about Rob, Joshua might have lain unconscious on the floor until morning.
He could have suffered brain damage.
He could have died.
Why had Mike called us? Joshua and Rob were classmates, not close friends.
Our explanation... In Hebrew, Joshua?s name means ?saved by God.? We are truly blessed!!

Extra, Extra, Read All About It...
There is full page What Color Is Your Brain? article in the Sept. 8th Woman's World Magazine on magazine newsstands, in grocery stores and drug stores, NOW! The article is located in the Personal Insight section on page 49 and entitled: The brain-color clue to your true personality!
Last January, Jeffry O'Brien, a free lance writer and radio host from Scottsdale, Arizona, interviewed me for the article. Our "Orange Brains" had great fun discussing the Brain Color concept.
Jeffry was an adept student. He learned the Brain Color approach quickly and began speaking fluent Brain Color immediately. Jeffry said, "In normal life I am Blue-Green. My girlfriend is Blue-Orange. In my professional life I am Green-Yellow and so is she."
Last July, Kristina Mastrocola, Assistant Editor, Woman's World Magazine sent me the following email: "Just got word that the story is indeed approved! Yay! This story is slated to hit stands on Sept. 1 with a cover date of Sept. 8."
I unexpectedly learned that the article had been published when I was driving home and speaking Terri Myers, a fellow Women in Networking (WIN) member. Terri said, "I read the article, while spending the weekend at my friend's lake house. It is exciting to know the person featured in a magazine article." I appreciated her kind words.
I immediately amended my plan go home. I turned around in the bank parking lot, drove directly to the grocery story and purchased several copies of Woman's World. It was thrilling to see the article. Jeffry wrote an accurate, educational and engaging article! I was delighted to know the article was finally published and the book was receiving national publicity!
What Grand PR for What Color Is Your Brain? A Fun and Fascinating Approach to Understanding Yourself and Other!
To quote my friend, Karen Hanrahan, Wellness Educator, Consultant, Blog Author,
"How fun to get that kind of exposure!"

Another example of my "Abundance of Book Blessings!"
