Last night AC/DC played the Wachovia Center for the first time in 8 years. Unfortunately due to the ticketing system they now have in place through Comcast we sat on the side of the arena in the very last row. And I was online exactly when tickets went on sale so I have no idea why my "random draw" kept coming up with nothing but 2nd level tickets. This is the furthest I have ever sat from my favorite band. But we had a good time just the same.
And when I say we, I mean me and my sons. Yes, I took a 6 and 8 year old to a rock concert, and no, I am not just trying to be one of those cool parents. I won't be having beer parties for them when they are 16 just to keep them from driving drunk. They are very much into AC/DC and some other rock bands thanks to video games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. Andrew and I had seen Iron Maiden and Judas Priest this summer. This was Dan's first concert ever.
And what first concert it was. The band opened with their new smash single Rock 'N' Roll Train and played another four songs off their best selling CD, Black Ice. They also didn't disappoint by playing all their classics - Back in Black, You Shook Me All Night Long, For Those About To Rock (We Salute You), among many more. They played an hour and forty minutes, which is actually 20 minutes shorter than normal, but they are getting a bit older.
But despite their ages they rocked out hard than most bands half their age. Angus is the youngest at 53 and Brian, the singer, is the oldest at 61. But they showed no signs of slowing down. Brian prowled the stage, slapping hands with the crowd and egging them on to sing along. Angus did his typical non-stop head banging and foot-tapping with the occasional interruption by a duck walk. And at no point during the concert did the band have any kind of rest period. It was pure rock 'n' roll from start to finish. Andrew and Dan, my cute little devils at the AC/DC concert.
On October 20 AC/DC released their first album in 8 years. It's been a long time coming and it wasn't worth the wait. Don't get me wrong; it's great and I love it. But AC/DC have never made a bad album. It didn't take them 8 years to write this album. They rested for 7 and they took a year to write and record.
You are either an AC/DC fan or you are not. You either have all 15 of the albums or you just have Back in Black. But an AC/DC fan would have bought this no matter what. As I said, AC/DC has never made a bad album. There were a few poor selling releases in the mid to late '80s, but they still had great material. Where they lacked on albums like Flick Of The Switch, Fly On The Wall, and Blow Up Your Video, was in the production area. They didn't have the magic ear of Mutt Lange, who produced their classic Back In Black. They produced themselves for a few albums, and it shows that they didn't know what they were doing.
I'm proud to say that with Black Ice AC/DC enlisted the help of super-producer Brendan O'Brien. He is better known for producing bands like Bush and Pearl Jam. But he understands what AC/DC needs to sound like. After listening to this album for a few weeks I can say that Black Ice ranks around #5 on the list of my favorite albums as far as material is concerned. But for sound quality and production value it ranks a close 2nd behind Back In Black. Yes, it does sound that good. The guitars are loud and obnoxious, as usual. The drums really make you want to tap your feet, and the bass is pumping throughout.
If you are a true AC/DC fan than you already have Black Ice. If you're not a fan then you should look into getting it. But be warned: if you buy Black Ice, you'll love it and then you'll want to get the rest of their catalog.
Black Ice has sold 5.3 million copies so far this year and is on pace to be the biggest selling CD of the year.

Typically the wedding season ends around Halloween. Since November starts to get cold many brides don't want to get married after the end of October. This when many photographers will tell me that they'll see me in May.
We've been very fortunate this year and our wedding season is going right up until New Years Eve. What does this mean? Well, for one I think it means that we are doing great work. But it also means that more couples are starting to appreciate the art of video. I would say that many couples who get married between November and March are doing so because they might be on a tight budget and these are the months when reception halls give "off-season" discounts. But while couples might be saving some money on the hall, it's nice to know that they are willing to spend some money documenting their day.
I am very happy for this new trend because I see the photo and video as going hand in hand and are equally important. We are essentially doing the same job, but with two different mediums. But unfortunately many couple don't appreciate video. I know this because I hear many couples tell me that they weren't going to get a video until they saw our work.
So I'm going to ask all my brides to be an ambassador for the importance of video. If you are one of our clients who have received their final video or had a B.I.G. Video Show done for you, please share it with any and all brides you come across. Even if they are a complete stranger. Post links to your videos in blogs or on The Knot and encourage other brides to look into getting a wedding video. We might no be able to shoot their wedding as we are more than halfway booked up for next year already, but even if they book another videographer I can promise they won't regret it.
Usually when I write blogs posts I will refer to the company as us and we. That's because KSV is much more than me. It's much more than one guy who loves to edit wedding video. I am lucky enough to have some very dedicated and talented people around me. My sister, Cindy, has been filming with me for 3 years. She even helped me film my very first wedding. Jimmy and Steve came onboard 2 years ago this month. Thanks to them KSV has reached a level of success that I never dreamed of.
Kimberly and Timothy got to experience their talents when they hired us to do one our popular B.I.G. Video Shows back on November 8.
...PENN STATE! (Oh yeah and we're married, too)
Cindy and Rich had the pleasure of filming Keri and Don's wedding on Saturday, October 18th. Jimmy did an amazing edit! Their wedding was so much fun and really personal. They met at Penn State and are oozing school spirit. Everything from top to bottom was Penn State Blue and White. If Pappa Joe was not busy coaching against Michigan on Saturday, I'm sure he would have been there
Please enjoy this fabulous B.I.G. video show!!!
There is a problem in the wedding industry that has been around for some time - professional recommendations. Unfortunately there are some wedding vendors that "team up" and offer to recommend each other simply to help each other get business. In my opinion it is very unprofessional to recommend another vendor unless you are doing so for the benefit of the couple, and not yourself.
This problem is especially widespread in the reception halls. Many halls will hand couples a "preferred vendor list" or book. What they don't disclose to the couple is that each vendor paid to be on the list or in the book. In many cases they have no first-hand knowledge of the vendor's work. Please do not book from the preferred vendor list until you look at all your options. You may not end up with the best vendor for your wedding and will continue to promote this unethical business practice.
At KSV we are proud to say that we only recommend the best professionals in the industry. All the professionals on our links page are people that we stand behind 100%. We will not recommend anyone until we have worked with them at least once, so we know they are professional when they do their job. If they are a photographer I personally will check out their website and view images so I can say with confidence that they do good work.
The funny thing is I have been approached by many wedding vendors and asked to network with them but most of them I don't bother calling back because I don't enjoy their work. When we make a recommendation it has to mean something. So please check out our links page on the website before you book your wedding professionals.
So on that note I will leave you with a slide show from one of my favorite photographers, Jordan Brian. This was a couple that he booked on my recommendation. Jessie and Mike were so great and so much fun to shoot.
