RSS Feed Before sunrise

Bella took these pictures this morning. We wanted to show the cows out on the corn stalks.
They have 30 acres to "roam and gloam" as Dad would say. The blue specs out there are the lick tubs. Z moved in the creep feeder for the calves and the bale rings.

We are extremely busy now with harvest finally underway. Here is a picture from the combine seat. Couldn't decide which picture was better.
This small version doesn't do it justice. There is much more depth in a full screen size. Oh, well.

RSS Feed Intentional weeds?

Remember the seed from heaven post? We had turnip and rye seed flown on our field that is fenced in for cattle. We harvested it yesterday. This is how big the plants are. The rye is the one that looks like grass (well, it is a grass) the turnips are the broad leaf plants. I thought it would be much further along with all the rain. Sowing it with a planter would give a better stand but we knew with the wet and cool summer the harvest would be late. Then it would be later getting the rye sown. We need to get them out in this field as soon as we could. The pastures were giving out and we didn't want to use round bales if we didn't have to. Did you think it was a picture of weeds?

RSS Feed Keep them doggies movin'

We keep moving the cows between pastures waiting to be able to harvest the corn you see in the background. Then we can turn them out on the stalks and the rye and turnips that should be growing back there. We took some video of switching pastures this spring. Sometimes they run. Sometimes they walk. Depends on their mood and what everyone else does.
We had .6 of rain yesterday. So we are not sure when we will get back in the fields. They were already soft before the rain. Luckily there wasn't heavy winds to blow the corn over. Don't you love this view from our porch?

RSS Feed What do you do with a mud hole?

Fill it with rock. With all the rain this year, it has made this area where the cows leave the lot for the pasture a mud hole. We needed to do something about it to prevent the foot rot some of the cows have had. So we hauled in some rock.
Then we had to spread it. The cows were very interested.
We hauled in more rock. The loader tractor did help some to spread it for us. We still had to level it some more.
We also hauled in lime to put around the new waterer. It helps to make a solid base but also lets the rain seep through.
Genevieve wondered what those kids were doing in the bed of the truck?
