RSS Feed How To Travel with E- Tickets in Trains in India!

As and when we book our Train Tickets Online, we have to take the print out of the e-ticket which is called ?Electronic Reservation Slip?- (ERS) ? in standard specified Proforma containing reservation particulars, and instructions for use which can be used by the passenger along with the relevant authorized Identification, as travel authority for performing the journey. According to the Indian Railways, everyday about 3 Lakhs of A-4 Size paper is being used for taking print outs of such ERS?s.

Now, the Indian Railways advises and requests the passengers ?Not to take the paper print outs? of the e-tickets to save paper, trees and environment.

Instead of Paper print outs of ERS?s the passenger may use the following:
  • ?Virtual Reservation Message?- (VRM) , which is a screen-shot of the e-ticket displayed through laptops,Mobile phones andIPads and
  • SMS Sent by IRCTC to Mobile Phones with the details of the e-ticket/s booked.- (The SMS will be received only at the registered Mobile Number of the 'irctc user' booking the e tickets. The passenger may be different from the person/s booking the e ticket. However, the Forwarded SMS received in the Mobile Phone of the Passenger may be used as the VRM. )
ERS/VRM/SMS sent by IRCTC along with any one of the prescribed ID proofs in original and the indication of the passenger(s)' name(s) in the Reservation Chart will authorize the passenger to travel.

VRM/ SMS sent by IRCTC combined with valid photo-id in original will be treated as an instrument on par with the ERS.

ERS/VRM/SMS sent by IRCTC along with one of the prescribed proofs of identity in original will also authorize the passenger to enter the platform on the day of journey and he/she will not be required to purchase platform ticket.

ERS/VRM/SMS sent by IRCTC along with the Original Photo Id. Proof will be required to be produced on demand of Ticket Checking Staff on the platform/s.

The following are the authorized Photo Identity Proofs to be carried in ORIGINAL while traveling with an e- ticket:
  • Original Driving License, (It is notable that for RTO purposes we can use the photocopy the Driving License, and for Id Proof for e ticket only the ORIGINAL Driving License will be accepted),
  • IT-PAN Card,
  • Ration Card with Photograph, (Only the Head Of the Family whose photo will be embossed in the Ration card can use this- The family members whose names will be in the Ration Card cannot use Ration card as Photo Id.),
  • Voter?s Identity Card, Issued by the Election Commission of India,
  • Pension Pay Order (PPO) with Photograph,
  • Senior Citizen card with Photograph,
  • Below Poverty (BPL) Card with Photograph,
  • ESI cards- with Photograph (issued for taking treatment in ESI Dispensaries),
  • CGHS Cards with Photograph issued to individual family members of Central Government Employees,
  • Pass-Books of Banks with Issued with Photos. (Photos affixed the Bank Pass- Books must be with the Bank's Seal.)

For -E-Ticket/s of Non-AC Classes, it is sufficient if any one of the passengers of one e- ticket carries the Photo Identity Card.

However, for all AC Classes ( First Class AC, 2 Tier AC, 3 Tier AC and AC Chair Cars) - E- Ticket/s each one of the passengers of one e-ticket should carry the Photo Id Proof.

RSS Feed The Hike in the Ordinary Second Class Railway Fares Rolled Back by the New Railways Minister Mukul Roy !

In the recent Indian Railways Budget presented by the Railways Minister Mr.Dinesh Trivedi, all the Passenger Fares had been hiked.
However, the hikes in the Passengers Fares were opposed by many, including Mr. Trivedi?s party Chief Ms. Mamata Bannerjee, the President of Trinamool Congress.

She insisted that Mr.Trivedi should be removed from the post of Railways Minister and she suggested Mr. Mukul Roy for the post of Indian Railways Minister.

Accordingly, Mr. Dinesh Trivedi resigned and Mr. Mukul Roy was sworn in as the Indian Railways Minister.

In the final Indian Railways Budget, the hikes to the Second Class Passengers for second class suburban and non-suburban and sleeper class travel fare by 2 paise, 3 paise and 5 paise per km, as it was a ?huge drain on the pocket of the masses? , according to the present Railways Minister Mr.Mukul Roy.

It is notable that the hike for 3 Tier AC fares and Chair Cars also have been withdrawn, as the 3 Tier AC and AC CC classes are under the ?Second Class?.

However, the fare for the 2 Tier AC which is also under ?Second Class? is not withdrawn.
And the new Indina Railways Tariff will have hikes in the following 3 High End Classes only fares:
  • First Class,
  • First Class-AC,
  • 2 Tier AC.
However, the Cost of Platform Tickets will be Rs 5/- as increased from Rs 3/- by Mr. Trivedi.

While the roll back in the Fares for the Second Class Sleeper and second class suburban and non-suburban fares appear reasonable, the hikes for all the AC Classes should have been kept undisturbed.

Also the hike in the cost of Platform Tickets is also unfair as it would be anti-people, if viewed from the same approach of burden to the masses.

RSS Feed Some of the Highlights of the Indian Railways Budget Presented by the Railways Minister Dinesh Trivedi

The present Railways Budget-2012, presented in the Parliament of India, has for the first time in the recent 9 years has hiked the Passenger Fares Ranging From 2 paise to 30 paise per kilometer, as detailed below:
  • For Sub-Urban trains by 2 paise per km,
  • For Mail trains 3 paise per km
  • For Express Trains 5 paise per km,
  • For AC Chair Cars 10 paise per km,
  • For 3 Tier AC 10 paise per km,
  • For 2 Tier AC 15 paise per km and
  • For First Class AC 30 paise per km.
And the Platform tickets will cost Rs 5/- from now onwards.

The Railways Minister Mr. Dinesh Trivedi?s first Railway Budget has been called ?Anti-Peoples? Budget? by his own partymen (of Trina Mool Congress) including his party Chief and an ex-Railway Minister Ms. Mamata Bannerjee. The following are some of the highlights of the present Railways Budget:
  • Safety will be the First Priority of the Indian Railways and and Independent Railway Safety Authority as a statutory body will be set up,
  • All the unmanned Level Crossings will be abolished in the next 5 years.
  • Arjuna Awardees will have concessions in the fares
  • Anaemia and Sickle Cell Disease Patients will have 50% Concession
  • Indian Railways Stations Development Corporation will redevelop stations and maintain them on the pattern of Airports!! (It is a pleasure to imagine and visualize Railway Passengers walking on smooth Platforms with Strolleys as in Airports.)
The Indian Railways is running at a loss and its Financial Status is ?Critical? and everybody knows that something should be done to bring out the Indian Railways from the ?ICU?.
However, as and when the Passengers Fares are hiked nobody likes it. What will the Railway Minister do?

Should the Indian Railways Budget be ?Anti- People? or ?Anti Railways? ?

Who will suggest a Railways Budget which would be "Pro- People" and "Pro- Railways" simultaneously ?
