Clickbank Business Guide - Advertising

Advertising is a form of communication whose purpose is to inform potential customers about products and services and how to obtain and use them. Many advertisements are also designed to generate increased consumption of those products and services through the creation and reinforcement of brand image and brand loyalty. For these purposes advertisements often contain both factual information and persuasive messages. Every major medium is used to deliver these messages, including: television, radio, movies, magazines, newspapers, video games, the Internet (see Internet advertising), and billboards. Advertising is often placed by an advertising agency on behalf of a company.

Advertisements can also be seen on the seats of grocery carts, on the walls of an airport walkway, on the sides of buses, heard in telephone hold messages and in-store public address systems. Advertisements are usually placed anywhere an audience can easily and/or frequently access visuals and/or audio and print

Organizations which frequently spend large sums of money on advertising but do not strictly sell a product or service to the general public include: political parties, interest groups, religion-supporting organizations, and militaries looking for new recruits. Additionally, some non-profit organizations are not typical advertising clients and rely upon free channels, such as public service announcements.

Advertising spending has increased dramatically in recent years. In the United States alone in 2006, spending on advertising reached $155 billion, reported TNS Media Intelligence. That same year, according to a report titled Global Entertainment and Media Outlook: 2006-2010 issued by global accounting firm PricewaterhouseCoopers, worldwide advertising spending was $385 billion. The accounting firm's report projected worldwide advertisement spending to exceed half-a-trillion dollars by 2010.

While advertising can be seen as necessary for economic growth, it is not without social costs. Unsolicited Commercial Email and other forms of spam have become so prevalent as to have become a major nuisance to users of these services, as well as being a financial burden on internet service providers. Advertising is increasingly invading public spaces, such as schools, which some critics argue is a form of child exploitation.

History

Commercial messages and political campaign displays have been found in the ruins of ancient Arabia. Egyptians used papyrus to create sales messages and wall posters, while lost-and-found advertising on papyrus was common in Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. Wall or rock painting for commercial advertising is another manifestation of an ancient advertising form, which is present to this day in many parts of Asia, Africa, and South America. The tradition of wall painting can be traced back to Indian rock-art paintings that date back to 4000 BCE. As printing developed in the 15th and 16th century, advertising expanded to include handbills. In the 17th century advertisements started to appear in weekly newspapers in England. These early print advertisements were used mainly to promote: books and newspapers, which became increasingly affordable with advances in the printing press; and medicines, which were increasingly sought after as disease ravaged Europe. However, false advertising and so-called "quack" advertisements became a problem, which ushered in the regulation of advertising content.

As the economy expanded during the 19th century, advertising grew alongside. In the United States, the success of this advertising format eventually led to the growth of mail-order advertising.

In June 1836, French newspaper La Presse is the first to include paid advertising in its pages, allowing it to lower its price, extend its readership and increase its profitability. The formula is soon copied by all titles. In 1841, the first advertising agency was established by Volney Palmer in Boston. Around the same time, in France, Charles-Louis Havas extended the services of his news agency, Havas to include advertisement brokerage, making it the first French advertising agency. At first, agencies were brokers for advertisement space in newspapers. N. W. Ayer & Son was the first full-service agency to assume responsibility for advertising content. N.W. Ayer opened in 1875, and was located in Philadelphia. At the turn of the century, there were few career choices for women in business; however, advertising was one of the few. Since women were responsible for most of the purchasing done in their household, advertisers and agencies recognised the value of women's insight during the creative process. In fact, the first American advertising to use a sexual sell was created by a woman ? for a soap product. Although tame by today's standards, the advertisement featured a couple with the message "The skin you love to touch".

When radio stations began broadcasting in the early 1920s, the programs were however nearly exploded. This was so because the first radio stations were established by radio equipment manufacturers and retailers who offered programs in order to sell more radios to consumers. As time passed, many non-profit organizations followed suit in setting up their own radio stations, and included: schools, clubs and civic groups. When the practice of sponsoring programs was popularised, each individual radio program was usually sponsored by a single business in exchange for a brief mention of the business' name at the beginning and end of the sponsored shows. However, radio station owners soon realised they could earn more money by selling sponsorship rights in small time allocations to multiple businesses throughout their radio station's broadcasts, rather than selling the sponsorship rights to single businesses per show. This practice was carried over to television in the late 1940s and early 1950s. A fierce battle was fought between those seeking to commercialise the radio and people who argued that the radio spectrum should be considered a part of the commons ? to be used only non-commercially and for the public good. The United Kingdom pursued a public funding model for the BBC, originally a private company but incorporated as a public body by Royal Charter in 1927. In Canada, advocates like Graham Spry were likewise able to persuade the federal government to adopt a public funding model. However, in the United States, the capitalist model prevailed with the passage of the 1934 Communications Act which created the Federal Communications Commission. To placate the socialists, the U.S. Congress did require commercial broadcasters to operate in the "public interest, convenience, and necessity". Nevertheless, public radio does exist in the United States of America. In the early 1950s, the Dumont television network began the modern trend of selling advertisement time to multiple sponsors. Previously, Dumont had trouble finding sponsors for many of their programs and compensated by selling smaller blocks of advertising time to several businesses. This eventually became the norm for the commercial television industry in the United States. However, it was still a common practice to have single sponsor shows, such as the U.S. Steel Hour. In some instances the sponsors exercised great control over the content of the show - up to and including having one's advertising agency actually writing the show. The single sponsor model is much less prevalent now, a notable exception being the Hallmark Hall of Fame.

The 1960s saw advertising transform into a modern approach in which creativity was allowed to shine, producing unexpected messages that made advertisements more tempting to consumers' eyes. The Volkswagen ad campaign--featuring such headlines as "Think Small" and "Lemon" (which were used to describe the appearance of the car)--ushered in the era of modern advertising by promoting a "position" or "unique selling proposition" designed to associate each brand with a specific idea in the reader or viewer's mind. This period of American advertising is called the Creative Revolution and its poster boy was Bill Bernbach who helped create the revolutionary Volkswagen ads among others. Some of the most creative and long-standing American advertising dates to this incredibly creative period.

The late 1980s and early 1990s saw the introduction of cable television and particularly MTV. Pioneering the concept of the music video, MTV ushered in a new type of advertising: the consumer tunes in for the advertising message, rather than it being a byproduct or afterthought. As cable and satellite television became increasingly prevalent, specialty channels emerged, including channels entirely devoted to advertising, such as QVC, Home Shopping Network, and ShopTV.

Marketing through the Internet opened new frontiers for advertisers and contributed to the "dot-com" boom of the 1990s. Entire corporations operated solely on advertising revenue, offering everything from coupons to free Internet access. At the turn of the 21st century, a number of websites including the search engine Google, started a change in online advertising by emphasizing contextually relevant, unobtrusive ads intended to help, rather than inundate, users. This has led to a plethora of similar efforts and an increasing trend of interactive advertising.

The share of advertising spending relative to GDP has changed little across large changes in media. For example, in the U.S. in 1925, the main advertising media were newspapers, magazines, signs on streetcars, and outdoor posters. Advertising spending as a share of GDP was about 2.9%. By 1998, television and radio had become major advertising media. Nonetheless, advertising spending as a share of GDP was slightly lower -- about 2.4%.

A recent advertising innovation is "guerrilla promotions", which involve unusual approaches such as staged encounters in public places, giveaways of products such as cars that are covered with brand messages, and interactive advertising where the viewer can respond to become part of the advertising message. This reflects an increasing trend of interactive and "embedded" ads, such as via product placement, having consumers vote through text messages, and various innovations utilizing social networking sites (e.g. MySpace).

Paul McManus, the Creative Director of TBWA\Europe in the late 90's summed up advertising as being "...all about understanding. Understanding of the brand, the product or the service being offered and understanding of the people (their hopes and fears and needs) who are going to interact with it. Great advertising is the creative expression of that understanding."

Mobile Billboard Advertising

Mobile Billboards are flat-panel campaign units in which their sole purpose is to carry advertisements along dedicated routes selected by clients prior to the start of a campaign. Mobile Billboard companies do not typically carry third-party cargo or freight. Mobile displays are used for various situations in metropolitan areas throughout the world, including:

  • One day, and long term campaigns
  • Convention
  • Sporting events
  • Store openings or other similar promotional events
  • Big advertisements from smaller companies
Public service advertising

The same advertising techniques used to promote commercial goods and services can be used to inform, educate and motivate the public about non-commercial issues, such as AIDS, political ideology, energy conservation, religious recruitment, and deforestation.

Advertising, in its non-commercial guise, is a powerful educational tool capable of reaching and motivating large audiences. Public service advertising, non-commercial advertising, public interest advertising, cause marketing, and social marketing are different terms for (or aspects of) the use of sophisticated advertising and marketing communications techniques (generally associated with commercial enterprise) on behalf of non-commercial, public interest issues and initiatives.

In the United States, the granting of television and radio licenses by the FCC is contingent upon the station broadcasting a certain amount of public service advertising. To meet these requirements, many broadcast stations in America air the bulk of their required Public Service Announcements during the late night or early morning when the smallest percentage of viewers are watching, leaving more day and prime time commercial slots available for high-paying advertisers.

Public service advertising reached its height during World Wars I and II under the direction of several governments. Now in days, people average around 500 advertisements a day, found one researcher.

Types of advertising

Media

Commercial advertising media can include wall paintings, billboards, street furniture components, printed flyers and rack cards, radio, cinema and television ads, web banners, mobile telephone screens, shopping carts, web popups, skywriting, bus stop benches, human directional, magazines, newspapers, town criers, sides of buses or airplanes ("logojets"), taxicab doors, roof mounts and passenger screens, musical stage shows, subway platforms and trains, elastic bands on disposable diapers, stickers on apples in supermarkets, shopping cart handles, the opening section of streaming audio and video, posters, and the backs of event tickets and supermarket receipts. Any place an "identified" sponsor pays to deliver their message through a medium is advertising. Another way to measure advertising effectiveness is known as ad tracking. This advertising research methodology measures shifts in target market perceptions about the brand and product or service. These shifts in perception are plotted against the consumers? levels of exposure to the company?s advertisements and promotions.The purpose of Ad Tracking is generally to provide a measure of the combined effect of the media weight or spending level, the effectiveness of the media buy or targeting, and the quality of the advertising executions or creative.

Covert advertising

Covert advertising is when a product or brand is embedded in entertainment and media. For example, in a film, the main character can use an item or other of a definite brand, as in the movie Minority Report, where Tom Cruise's character John Anderton owns a phone with the Nokia logo clearly written in the top corner, or his watch engraved with the Bulgari logo. Another example of advertising in film is in I, Robot, where main character played by Will Smith mentions his Converse shoes several times, calling them "classics," because the film is set far in the future. I, Robot and Spaceballs also showcase futuristic cars with the Audi and Mercedes-Benz logos clearly displayed on the front of the vehicles. Cadillac chose to advertise in the movie The Matrix Reloaded, which as a result contained many scenes in which Cadillac cars were used. Similarly, product placement for Omega Watches, Ford, Vaio, BMW and Aston-Martin cars are featured in recent James Bond films, most notably Casino Royale.

Television commercials

The TV commercial is generally considered the most effective mass-market advertising format, as is reflected by the high prices TV networks charge for commercial airtime during popular TV events. The annual Super Bowl football game in the United States is known as the most prominent advertising event on television. The average cost of a single thirty-second TV spot during this game has reached $2.7 million (as of 2007).

Virtual advertisements may be inserted into regular television programming through computer graphics. It is typically inserted into otherwise blank backdrops or used to replace local billboards that are not relevant to the remote broadcast audience. More controversially, virtual billboards may be inserted into the background where none existing in real-life. Virtual product placement is also possible.

Newer media and advertising approaches

Increasingly, other media are overtaking television because of a shift towards consumer's usage of the internet as well as devices such as TiVo.

Advertising on the World Wide Web is a recent phenomenon. Prices of Web-based advertising space are dependent on the "relevance" of the surrounding web content and the traffic that the website receives.

E-mail advertising is another recent phenomenon. Unsolicited bulk E-mail advertising is known as "spam".

Some companies have proposed to place messages or corporate logos on the side of booster rockets and the International Space Station. Controversy exists on the effectiveness of subliminal advertising, and the pervasiveness of mass messages.

Unpaid advertising (also called word of mouth advertising), can provide good exposure at minimal cost. Personal recommendations ("bring a friend", "sell it"), spreading buzz, or achieving the feat of equating a brand with a common noun (in the United States, "Xerox" = "photocopier", "Kleenex" = tissue, "Vaseline" = petroleum jelly, "Hoover" = vacuum cleaner, and "Band-Aid" = adhesive bandage) ? these are the pinnacles of any advertising campaign. However, some companies oppose the use of their brand name to label an object. Equating a brand with a common noun also risks turning that brand into a genericized trademark - turning it into a generic term which means that its legal protection as a trademark is lost.

SMS (Short Message Service) text messages have taken Europe by storm and are breaking into the USA. The addition of a text-back number is gaining prevalence as a www address of yesterday. Used as part of your companies 'how to contact us' these can be very effective. These can be a (rented) keyword on a short-code or your own system on a standard number (like Mojio Messenger). The benefit of SMS text messages is people can respond where they are, right now, stuck in traffic, sitting on the metro. The use of SMS text messages can also be a great way to get a viral (word-of-mouth) campaign off the ground to build your own database of prospects see Viral marketing. Interstitial advertisement is a form of advertisement which takes place while a page loads.

From time to time, The CW airs short programming breaks called "Content Wraps," to advertise one company's product during an entire commercial break. The CW pioneered "content wraps" and some products featured were Herbal Essences, Crest, Guitar Hero 2, Cover Girl, and recently Toyota.

Measuring the impact of mass advertising

The most common method for measuring the impact of mass media advertising is the use of the rating point (rp) or the more accurate target rating point (trp). These two measures refer to the percentage of the universe of the existing base of audience members that can be reached by the use of each media outlet in a particular moment in time. The difference between the two is that the rating point refers to the percentage to the entire universe while the target rating point refers to the percentage of a particular segment or target. This becomes very useful when focusing advertising efforts on a particular group of people. One of the reasons advertising is successful is because it can target a particular audience to build awareness of what the advertiser has to offer.

Effect on memories and behavior

The impact of advertising has been a matter of considerable debate and many different claims have been made in different contexts. During debates about the banning of cigarette advertising, a common claim from cigarette manufacturers was that cigarette advertising does not encourage people to smoke who would not otherwise. The (eventually successful) opponents of advertising, on the other hand, claim that advertising does in fact increase consumption.

According to many sources, the past experience and state of mind of the person subjected to advertising may determine the impact that advertising has. Children under the age of four may be unable to distinguish advertising from other television programs, while the ability to determine the truthfulness of the message may not be developed until the age of 8.

Over the past fifteen years a whole science of marketing analytics and marketing effectiveness has been developed to determine the impact of marketing actions on consumers, sales, profit and market share. Marketing Mix Modeling, direct response measurement and other techniques are included in this science.

Public perception of the medium

As advertising and marketing efforts become increasingly ubiquitous in modern Western societies, the industry has come under criticism of groups such as Adbusters via culture jamming which criticizes the media and consumerism using advertising's own techniques. The industry is accused of being one of the engines powering a convoluted economic mass production system which promotes consumption. Recognizing the social impact of advertising, Mediawatch-uk, a British special interest group, works to educate consumers about how they can register their concerns with advertisers and regulators. It has developed educational materials for use in schools.

Public interest groups are increasingly suggesting that access to the mental space targeted by advertisers should be taxed, in that at the present moment that space is being freely taken advantage of by advertisers with no compensation paid to the members of the public who are thus being intruded upon. This kind of tax would be a Pigovian tax in that it would act to reduce what is now increasingly seen as a public nuisance. Efforts to that end are gathering more momentum, with Arkansas and Maine considering bills to implement such a taxation. Florida enacted such a tax in 1987 but was forced to repeal it after six months, as a result of a concerted effort by national commercial interests, which withdrew planned conventions, causing major losses to the tourism industry, and canceled advertising, causing a loss of 12 million dollars to the broadcast industry alone.

Negative effects of advertising

An extensively documented effect is the control and vetoing of free information by the advertisers. Any negative information on a company or its products or operations often results in pressures from the company to withdraw such information lines, threatening to cut their ads. This behavior makes the editors of the media self-censor content that might upset their ad payers. The bigger the companies are, the bigger their relation becomes, maximizing control over a single piece of information.

Advertisers may try to minimize information about or from consumer groups, consumer-controlled purchasing initiatives (as joint purchase systems), or consumer-controlled quality information systems.

Another indirect effect of advertising is to modify the nature of the communication media where it is shown. Media that get most of their revenues from publicity try to make their medium a good place for communicating ads before anything else. The clearest example is television, where broadcasters try to make the public stay for a long time in a mental state that encourages spectators not to switch the channel during advertisements. Programs that are low in mental stimulus, require light concentration and are varied are best for long sitting times. These also make for much easier emotional transition to ads, which are occasionally more entertaining than the regular shows. A simple way to understand objectives in television programming is to compare the content of programs paid for and chosen by the viewer with those on channels that get their income mainly from advertisements.

In several books, articles and videos, communication professor Sut Jhally has argued that pervasive commercial advertising, by constantly reinforcing a bogus association between consumption and happiness and by focusing on individual immediate needs, leads to a squandering of resources and stands in the way of a discussion of fundamental societal and long-term needs.

Regulation

In the US many communities believe that many forms of outdoor advertising blight the public realm. As long ago as the 1960s in the US there were attempts to ban billboard advertising in the open countryside. Cities such as São Paulo have introduced an outright ban with the UK capital also having specific legislation to control unlawful displays.

There have been increasing efforts to protect the public interest by regulating the content and the influence of advertising. Some examples are: the ban on television tobacco advertising imposed in many countries, and the total ban of advertising to children under twelve imposed by the Swedish government in 1991. Though that regulation continues in effect for broadcasts originating within the country, it has been weakened by the European Court of Justice, which had found that Sweden was obliged to accept foreign programming, including those from neighboring countries or via satellite.

In Europe and elsewhere, there is a vigorous debate on whether (or how much) advertising to children should be regulated. This debate was exacerbated by a report released by the Kaiser Family Foundation in February 2004 which suggested that food advertising targeting children was an important factor in the epidemic of childhood obesity in the United States of America.

In many countries - namely New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, and many European countries - the advertising industry operates a system of self-regulation. Advertisers, advertising agencies and the media agree on a code of advertising standards that they attempt to uphold. The general aim of such codes is to ensure that any advertising is 'legal, decent, honest and truthful'. Some self-regulatory organizations are funded by the industry, but remain independent, with the intent of upholding the standards or codes (like the Advertising Standards Authority in the UK).

In the UK most forms of outdoor advertising such as the display of billboards is regulated by the UK Town and County Planning system. Currently the display of an advertisement without consent from the Planning Authority is a criminal offense liable to a fine of £2500 per offence. All of the major outdoor billboard companies in the UK have convictions of this nature.

Naturally, many advertisers view governmental regulation or even self-regulation as intrusion of their freedom of speech or a necessary evil. Therefore, they employ a wide-variety of linguistic devices to bypass regulatory laws (e.g. printing English words in bold and French translations in fine print to deal with the Article 12 of the 1994 Toubon Law limiting the use of English in French advertising); see Bhatia and Ritchie 2006:542. The advertisement of controversial products such as cigarettes and condoms is subject to government regulation in many countries. For instance, the tobacco industry is required by law in most countries to display warnings cautioning consumers about the health hazards of their products. Linguistic variation is often used by advertisers as a creative device to reduce the impact of such requirements.

Future

Global advertising

Advertising has gone through five major stages of development: domestic, export, international, multi-national, and global. For global advertisers, there are four, potentially competing, business objectives that must be balanced when developing worldwide advertising: building a brand while speaking with one voice, developing economies of scale in the creative process, maximising local effectiveness of ads, and increasing the company?s speed of implementation. Born from the evolutionary stages of global marketing are the three primary and fundamentally different approaches to the development of global advertising executions: exporting executions, producing local executions, and importing ideas that travel. Advertising research is key to determining the success of an ad in any country or region. The ability to identify which elements and/or moments of an ad that contributes to its success is how economies of scale are maximised. Once one knows what works in an ad, that idea or ideas can be imported by any other market. Market research measures, such as Flow of Attention, Flow of Emotion and branding moments provide insight into what is working in an ad in any country or region because the measures are based on the visual, not verbal, elements of the ad.

Trends

With the dawn of the Internet came many new advertising opportunities. Popup, Flash, banner, advergaming, and email advertisements (the last often being a form of spam) are now commonplace.

The ability to record shows on DVRs (such as TiVo) allow users to record the programs for later viewing, enabling them to fast forward through commercials. Additionally, as more seasons of pre-recorded ?Boxed Sets? are offered for sale of Television show series; fewer people watch the shows on TV. However, the fact that these sets are sold, means the company will receive additional profits from the sales of these sets. To counter this effect, many advertisers have opted for product placement on TV shows like Survivor.

Particularly since the rise of "entertaining" advertising, some people may like an advertisement enough to wish to watch it later or show a friend. In general, the advertising community has not yet made this easy, although some have used the Internet to widely distribute their ads to anyone willing to see or hear them.

Another significant trend regarding future of advertising is the growing importance of niche or targeted ads. Also brought about by the Internet and the theory of The Long Tail, advertisers will have an increasing ability to reach specific audiences. In the past, the most efficient way to deliver a message was to blanket the largest mass market audience possible. However, usage tracking, customer profiles and the growing popularity of niche content brought about by everything from blogs to social networking sites, provide advertisers with audiences that are smaller but much better defined, leading to ads that are more relevant to viewers and more effective for companies' marketing products. Among others, Comcast Spotlight is one such advertiser employing this method in their video on demand menus. These advertisements are targeted to a specific group and can be viewed by anyone wishing to find out more about a particular business or practice at any time, right from their home. This causes the viewer to become proactive and actually choose what advertisements they want to view.

In freelance advertising, companies hold public competitions to create ads for their product, the best one of which is chosen for widespread distribution with a prize given to the winner(s). During the 2007 Super Bowl, Pepsico held such a contest for the creation of a 30-second television ad for the Doritos brand of chips, offering a cash prize to the winner. Chevrolet held a similar competition for their Tahoe line of SUVs. This type of advertising, however, is still in its infancy. It may ultimately decrease the importance of advertising agencies by creating a niche for independent freelancers.

Embedded advertising or in-film ad placements are happening on a larger scale now than ever before. Films like Krrish had over a dozen placements including Lay?s, Bournvita, Samsung, Faber Castell and Hero Honda.

BERKELEY, Calif. - Shareholders of Yahoo Inc. are now being confronted by Carl Icahn and the slate of directors he has to replace the current board. The thinking is that the company's directors screwed up an opportunity to sell to Microsoft Corp.

I've looked over the current directors of Yahoo and Icahn's proposed replacements. Here's what I think of them, keeping in mind that to be on this board it might be useful if you knew something (anything) about computers and the Internet. In some cases, I seriously doubt that the person named even knows how to turn on a computer.

The current Yahoo board is incredibly mediocre, with two guys from Northwest Airlines Corp. including the chairman. Let's look at them:

  • Jerry Yang, founder. He should not be the chief executive but should be the chairman of the board. Why isn't he?
  • Roy Bostock, chairman of the board here and at Northwest Airlines. He's also a director at Morgan Stanley. Sounds like a professional board guy. What's this have to do with the Internet?
  • Ron Burkle, finance guy and Bill Clinton pal. Burkle's an expert in supermarkets and other things, as well as board member of Occidental Petroleum Corp. What does he bring to the party, knowledge about coal reserves? I doubt he can even use email.
  • Eric Hippeau. The second of the board members besides Yang who actually knows the business. Negative: He's been on the board the longest and signed off on too many dumb deals.
  • Vyomesh Joshi, a VP at Hewlett-Packard Co. Are you kidding me? He's from the printing division. What's Yahoo got to do with that?
  • Arthur Kern. Known as a nice guy. He's been on the board forever and is the new-media guy. Also must have signed off on a lot of dumb deals.
  • Robert Kotick, chairman and chief executive of Activision Inc. OK, he's in the business. Finally!
  • Ed Kozel. I could be wrong, but Kozel seems like the real sleeper on the board, with a background in technology as well as finance. He's probably underappreciated.
  • Maggie Wilderotter. Seems like another lightweight to me; apparently her connection to Microsoft
  • as a former VP is her real allure. She's another professional director who's on various other big-name boards. Must be good at networking.
  • Gary Wilson, another board member from Northwest Airlines. Yeah, that makes sense. I smell a drinking club!

So this board stinks overall.

That said, at least this group is familiar with the company. Icahn wants to drag in a bunch of out-and-out finance/law guys, along with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

Cuban made his fortune by selling Broadcast.com to Yahoo back in the late 1990s for more than $5 billion. After that it disappeared from view. Another $5 billion down the drain.

Let's look this new group over:
  • Lucian Bebchuk. Famous corporate lawyer who's an expert in corporate governance. Will serve as the procedural bully on the board.
  • Frank Biondi Jr. The former Viacom Inc. executive sits on a lot of boards, including Seagate Technology's. He might have a clue but that won't be his job. His job will be to say "yes" to Icahn.
  • John Chapple. Too many accomplishments to be a real person. Another impressive seat-filler with little or no hook into Yahoo's sort of business.
  • Mark Cuban. My guess is he's being brought in to be the next chief executive after basketball season is over. Projected tenure? Six months.
  • Adam Dell. Another VC and finance guy with a law degree.
  • Keith Meister. He's Icahn's personal economic hit man.
  • Edward Meyer. Might be OK; at least he knows advertising.
  • Brian Posner. Another guy with too many items on the "what I did over the weekend" list (see Chapple, above). Do these guys actually sleep, ever, or is this a giant bragfest?
  • Robert Shaye. Another lawyer-MBA type who also is a Hollywood mogul. Cripes.
Of course, there's Icahn himself as coach/chairman of this all-star team.

Here's the deal: If these guys get on the board, they will first try to package a deal for Microsoft and walk away with more money. If they cannot do that, they will be unable to manage Yahoo since they are all professional place-sitters on everything but Internet companies.

So they will immediately parcel out and sell off the company piece by piece until Yahoo is dead. Looking at the bios of these guys tells you this is something they can do.

And they'll do it fast.

RSS Feed Bush Says Saudi Oil Boost `Not Enough' to Ease Prices













May 17 - President George W. Bush said Saudi Arabia's decision to raise oil output 300,000 barrels a day is ``not enough'' to ease U.S. energy prices and that more domestic oil exploration and refining capacity are needed.

``It's not enough, it's something but it doesn't solve our problem,'' Bush told reporters in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt today when asked about the Saudi decision, taken May 10 and announced yesterday, to increase crude production.

``Our problem in America gets solved when we aggressively go for domestic exploration,'' Bush said after meeting Afghan President Hamid Karzai ahead of a World Economic Forum conference. ``Our problem gets solved if we expand our refining capacity, promote nuclear energy and continue our strategy for the advancement of alternative energy as well as conservation.''

Saudi Arabia, the world's largest oil exporter, said yesterday, while Bush was in Riyadh, that the country's daily output will rise to 9.45 million barrels a day in June. Saudi Oil Minister Ali al-Naimi told reporters the kingdom took the step in response to demands from customers.

Oil prices have doubled in the past year on surging demand, supply disruptions in places such as Nigeria and commodity purchases by investors as a hedge against a weakening U.S. dollar. The price surge threatens to accelerate inflation and curb economic growth.

Nuclear Power, Refineries

Bush voiced frustration with congressional blockades of Republican-led efforts to increase domestic drilling.

``One of the interesting things about American politics is, is those who are screaming the loudest for increased production from Saudi Arabia are the very same people who are fighting the fiercest against domestic exploration, against development of nuclear power and against expanding refining capacity,'' Bush said.

``So I was pleased that they increased production by 300,000, but I am also realistic to say to the American people that we've got to do more at home and we need a Congress who will be responsive to those requests,'' Bush said.

The U.S. Senate on May 13 defeated a Republican plan to increase oil and natural-gas drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf and Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The measure failed by a 42-56 vote. Republicans argued that more domestic drilling may lower oil and gasoline prices. The measure also promoted alterative fossil fuels such as diesel derived from coal and oil shale.

Strategic Petroleum Reserve

Also this week, the Senate passed legislation that would halt oil shipments to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in an effort to ease record oil and gasoline prices. Bush is likely to sign the bill.

Crude oil futures traded in New York rose yesterday to a record about one hour after Bush landed in Saudi Arabia. They later settled at $126.29, an increase of $2.17, or 1.7 percent, though below the day's high after the promise to boost production. Saudi Arabia is the world's largest oil exporter and the most influential member of OPEC.

OPEC, which pumps more than 40 percent of the world's oil, has kept output targets unchanged during its past three meetings, on March 5, Feb. 1 and Dec. 5.

RSS Feed Without Yahoo, Microsoft Has Little for Advertisers












Online advertisers next week will descend on Seattle seeking signs of how Microsoft Corp. will compete online without buying Yahoo Inc. They will have to wait a bit longer.

For two days starting Tuesday, Microsoft will hold an annual demonstration to online advertisers its tools and strategies for making them money on the Internet. In the past, the message of the event was that Microsoft was on track to be a viable competitor of Google Inc. Microsoft would detail how it planned to get there by investing in its own services for searching the Internet and brokering ads. Advertisers liked the idea of a big alternative to Google that could generate business from their online ads. Anticipation grew.

It has become clear the plan hasn't worked -- which is the main reason Microsoft tried to buy its way into competitiveness by acquiring Yahoo, a deal that died May 3, when Microsoft withdrew its bid for the Internet company. Advertisers, Wall Street and even Microsoft employees want a new direction.

Next week's event won't deliver it. Instead, Microsoft will offer renewed faith in its existing plan: a vision for tying all of its disparate online services and related products into a one-stop-shopping place for advertisers. Microsoft will push the idea that only it can handle it all -- display ads on traditional Web sites, ads on mobile phones, ads in videogames and ads in any number of new areas, such as Surface, a new table computer for public places like casinos and hotels.

Offering support will be a cast of celebrities and celebrity business people, including director James Cameron and former Walt Disney head Michael Eisner. Microsoft will likely deliver some news on its online services, though it is likely to be incremental improvements, and not the real shot in the arm the business needs.

Compounding Microsoft's challenge is an apparently softening online-ad market. In March, researcher eMarketer cut its forecast for 2008 online-ad spending in the U.S. to $25.9 billion from a previous forecast of $27.5 billion. While that's still 23% growth over 2007, PubMatic, an online-ad company that measures ad pricing, found this week that the average price that Web sites garner from ads dropped from March to April, concluding that "the economic slowdown in the U.S. is starting to impact the online advertising industry."

Behind the scenes looms Carl Icahn, the activist investor who this week disclosed that he nominated a slate of new Yahoo board members with the intent of forcing the company into Microsoft's hands. To punctuate his message, he said he has bought 10 million Yahoo shares and options for 49 million more.

Whether Mr. Icahn can entice Microsoft back to the table remains to be seen. For now, Microsoft appears uninterested. Anyone hoping for a new online plan from Microsoft may have to wait until July, when financial analysts descend on Seattle for their annual Microsoft meeting.



RSS Feed Dollar Falls Most Against Euro in Month on Sentiment, Crude Oil











May 16 - The dollar fell the most against the euro in a month and depreciated versus the yen as a drop in consumer confidence and a surge in crude oil to a record increased concern U.S. economic growth will slow.

The currency dropped for the first time in four days against the euro and was down versus most of its major counterparts. The Australian dollar touched a 24-year high against the greenback as crude oil pushed prices of other commodities up.

``The dollar is under pressure,'' said Hidetoshi Yanagihara, senior currency trader at Mizuho Corporate Bank in New York. ``Higher commodity prices are affecting consumer confidence, casting a shadow on the economy.''

The dollar decreased 1 percent to $1.5594 per euro at 4:27 p.m. in New York, from $1.5448 yesterday. It earlier broke through $1.56 for the first time since May 1. The U.S. currency dropped 0.7 percent to 103.96 yen, from 104.74. The euro advanced 0.2 percent to 162.13 yen, from 161.79 yesterday.

The U.S. currency, which has risen 3 percent from a record low of $1.6019 against the euro on April 22, is down 0.7 percent this week, its second straight decline. The yen has fallen 1.8 percent against the euro, the biggest drop since mid-April. It's down 1 percent versus the dollar this week.

Crude oil rallied to the all-time high of $127.82 a barrel, leading commodities higher, as Goldman Sachs Group Inc. raised its forecast for the second half of this year to an average of $141 a barrel, citing supply constraints.

Euro Correlation

The correlation coefficient between oil and the euro-dollar exchange rate has been 0.95 for the past year, indicating they have moved in the same direction 95 percent of the time. The correlation is calculated based on the price changes of oil and the currencies.

The Australian dollar increased as much as 1.7 percent to 95.60 U.S. cents, the highest level since 1984, on higher commodity prices. Exports of raw materials, such as iron ore, account for 17 percent of Australia's economy.

Canada's dollar was little changed after touching 99.43 cents per U.S. dollar, the strongest since March 19. The currency has traded near parity with its U.S. counterpart this year after climbing 17 percent in 2007. Commodities such as oil account for about half of Canada's exports.

The dollar dropped as much as 0.8 percent to the nine-year low of 1.6409 versus the Brazilian real and fell as much as 1.6 percent to 5.0131 against the Norwegian krone, the weakest since April 24. Norway is the world's fifth-largest oil producer, while the real has gained 19 percent in the past 12 months, buoyed by a surge in exports of sugar and iron ore.

`All About Oil'

``Today it's all about oil,'' said Alan Kabbani, senior currency trader at Wachovia Corp. in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Iceland's krona was the best performer against the dollar among emerging-market currencies, increasing 4.6 percent to 74.32 after the central banks of Denmark, Sweden and Norway pledged as much as 1.5 billion euros ($2.3 billion) in emergency funds. The krona jumped 3.7 percent to 115.88 per euro. Before today, it had slumped 24 percent against the euro this year.

The dollar weakened as a report showed confidence among U.S. consumers fell in May to the lowest level in almost 28 years. The Reuters/University of Michigan consumer sentiment index dropped to 59.5 this month, from 62.6 in April. The median forecast of 65 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News was for a reading of 62.

The U.S. Dollar Index traded on ICE futures in New York, tracking the dollar against the currencies of six major counterparts, fell 0.8 percent to 72.792, the lowest since May 1. It dropped to a record of 70.698 on March 17.

Fed Rate Outlook

Futures on the Chicago Board of Trade show 88 percent odds that the Fed will hold the target lending rate at 2 percent at its next meeting on June 25. The balance of bets is for a reduction of a quarter-percentage point. There's a 21 percent chance of an increase to 2.25 percent in September.

The euro rose earlier against the dollar as European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet said the bank can't relax in its fight against inflation.

``There is no place for complacency,'' Trichet said in a speech in Brussels today. ``Price stability in the medium term has to be'' ensured. It's ``a necessary condition to sustain economic growth, job creation and social cohesion.''

The ECB has held its main refinancing rate at a six-year high of 4 percent since last June to control inflation, which accelerated to the fastest pace in 16 years in March.
